Free For All Friday No. 264

A common theme I've seen online a lot recently is whether to stick with your current setup for the rest of the month and start a new one January 1st, or start a new setup now. I intended to stick with my day per page diary for the rest of the year, but I have so much going on right now its limitations were holding me back so I started my new Bullet Journal system early. I'm already enjoying the unlimited space each day for lists and notes!

What about you? Are you starting a new diary setup, or even switching binder sizes now, or will you stick it out for the rest of the year and switch to something new in the new year?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything Filofax-related!

  1. My fellow Americans,
I took advantage of a FFUSA sale yesterday to order a Boston Pocket and Classic Compact for scandalous prices. Has anyone with experience ordering through them had to wait a long time for shipping? I ask because one day later I have a payment confirmation but no ship confirmation. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    1. I have received orders from Filofax France more quickly than from the US site.

  2. Does anyone have a go to list of pick me up / reward / good to self things in their Filofax ? If so, what is on your list that is wholesome, healing and preferably fairly inexpensive that you can share here? I am compiling one ..... thank you in advance.

    2. Hi Butanben,
I have one that I've kept for some time. Rather than type out my ideas, I've shared a photo of it on my new blog (http://clarifilo.com). Obviously, some won't apply to you, but they may trigger some additional ideas. Here's the direct link: http://wp.me/p48Sqc-P .

      Hope that helps!

  3. I am starting a new set up on January 1st, but thats because I don't like the inserts that came with my filofax when I bought it earlier in the year. I'm not a fan of the vertical WO2P. I want to try the unlined inserts.

  4. I switched last month from my FC classic 2PPD to my personal Holborn with DIYFish V2. Now I found a FC binder on eBay, but I haven't wanted to move back into my FC. I may stay where I am at and continue with Fish's awesome inserts, but feel I should move back into FC because I already had 2014 pages bought.

  5. I have tried to use the A5 Flex for about a year and I like it, but I miss the shufflability of a ringed system, so I have got a black compact Calipso as a Nanowrimo winning prize! Through all the years I have used FF, I have yet to find a model that suits me perfectly so I have accepted that I just have to add and adapt to make it fit. The Calipso is stylish, small, made with gorgeous leather and has an unusual clasp which I really like, but the stretchy pen loop is on the wrong side (Left) and too high up, so that any pen with a cap or tight hook will stick up over the edge. So I trimmed a Flex A5 pen loop to make the loop fall under the clasp and punched it, and it works great - I use it as a sticky dash as well! Just waiting for my Week per page and Month on one page with notes diaries and I'm all set!

  6. I just finished redoing my Diaries setup for 2014 in my personal Holborn zip. I went from having all the MO2P by themselves, and my WO2P by themselves, to putting the weekly pages for each month directly behind the MO2P for that month.

I found the Day Timer "Simply Stated" MO2P which has Monthly Projects to do on the front sheet of the particular month. That would allow me to have more visibility on my projects, and plan them in the weeklies right behind.

Projects and execution are a weak spot for me. I can't get a rhythm going. I've been reading Giftie's old posts on doing the monhly/weekly/daily reveiws which I am VERY sporadic about, and her ideas have been a big help. I'm hoping the new calendar setup and incorporating her ideas will gaive me a smoother year, especially with my projects.

  7. Marked in my planner yesterday the passing of Nelson Mandela. When I will do my yearly review of 2013, these and other important world events will get a moment of thought and reflection along with other personal events. It kind of helps me to see the big picture and put my life in perspective.

  8. Looking at Filofax USA website. Seems to be ever more chickified, or am I imagining it? Malden, for example, comes with an assortment of girly girl pastel paper. It wasn't always this way, right?

    1. I'd like to be able to select which inserts came in new organisers. If I buy, say, five organisers a year, do I really need a standard Wo2P for all of them? Surely it would save the company a ton of money in unwasted/unwanted paper if customers could pick and choose!

  9. I have gotten completely away from Filofax because of the paper quality. My diary and journal are both Midori, and I am running a bullet journal in a Rhodia dot grid A-5. All the paper is wonderful Fountain pens? No problem. The only thing I really miss is having everything in one place.

    1. I use Rhodia paper in my Filofax for notes and things, best of both worlds!

    3. Pocket or Mini mainly in my case, although I'm sure I could find a suitable size pad to use in Personal

  10. I'm planning to move from a personal to A5 planner, but I want it to be as eco-friendly as possible, and I'm having a hard time finding an eco-friendly planner binder! I'm thinking of just using Filofax style inserts in an A5 ring binder, but will they fit? I'm not sure if the holes will line up.

    1. When you say eco-friendly-what do you mean? Biodegradable? Recyclable? Recycled materials? Used/Repurposed binder? Locally produced?

Personally, I think a vintage leather binder is the most eco-friendly- it has been produced, used (and presumably loved) by someone already, and at some point, the rings can be recycled and the leather can be "composted" (heaven forbid, it should come to that!)

But my guess is you are looking for a binder made of bamboo fibers or some such. Bonded leather is a mixture of scraps of leather and a polymer-not biodegradable, but uses otherwise "wasted" materials.

    2. I would like recycled/recycleable, but that often includes plastics and I'd prefer natural/biodegradable materials over plastic based. I agree that generally the leather ones are nice for being recycled and pretty natural, but I don't eat meat and I'm actively avoiding purchasing leather goods so I'd prefer not a leather one. I know I'm asking a lot! :)

So yeah, bamboo fibers would be good!

    3. Joey check out reecovid binders for super eco-friendly. They are A5 size 3 ring binders, so you would have to punch holes for them (fine if you print your own pages).

    4. Thanks, Laurie! Do these fit Filofax type inserts or would I have to print my own?

    5. Sorry my mistake the reecovid binders are two-ring, not three. I tried A5 Filofax pages in my reecovid binder and the rings/ holes do not match up, the rings are between the Filofax holes. But the good news is any adjustable two-hole punch would work for it, no expensive specialized punch required so you could easily print any inserts you like on any paper you like and punch to fit. I recommend the A5 size Philofaxy printables, available via the link above. :)

  11. Ooooh... thank you!! I am so grateful. I am in bed with a fluey cold and thinking... a pick me up list is what I need to be doing and can do on my laptop right now. I can choose something from that list for next week, when I'm up and about again and feeling less stuffy nosed and grotty!! Heee Heee!!

  12. Earlier I said that I would use my A5 Boston as my main planner. I bought a Levenger refill for it but soon after that I decided I will not use it as my main planner. It is just too big for a main planner!! Several people on this blog said the A5 size was too big. So I am using a personal size planner with 1.2 inch rings for my main planner. I have used a personal Filofax for many years. I will incorporate a few changes but the main parts and my system will remain the same.

  13. Ooh, timely post since I'm re-considering my diary set up. I've set up the Midori for 2014, but I do miss my Filofax so I'm using its diary for the rest of the year. I'll definitely pick one up for next year just so I have the option mid-year.

  14. I won't be changing my setup for 2014. What I have now works very wekk and the old adage, 'If it isn't broken, don't fix it' applies.

I have my Wo2P diary for next year, and all of the rest runs on either plain/lined paper, or on a few templates I print out onto plain, so nothing to do for me in that regard this December.

I will, however, as ever, be spending a couple of days between Christmas and the New Year setting my new goals, making plans and generally bringing everything up to date - but I'll be using my present setup to do it.

  15. Oh dearie...
I might be late with this post but see if I care.
So some days ago I already cut and punched the pages of 2014 and I can fit them all in A5 just fine. Then last night I had to save the address book yet once again (it has a tendency of falling out from the backpocket of binder. I wanted to prevent overusing the already faulty rings so I made a thin notebook to store separately) in the midst of air- fly and cave in and repositioned the contacts to the back of the rings. Then I punched third of 2014´s chronodexes and voilà! I had 9 cm´s thick binder and pages that would either get killed while trying to use them and rings that one can kiss goodbye already. Even after I tried taking off projects (as I will after Dec) and packing almost all chronodexes on a plastic pocket for keepsake, I still had much too many cm´s of binder on my hands. I then reduced the DPP´s to half leaving only the first 6 mo´s on the rings. However, I really do need the whole 12 mo´s on the rings. There is a lot of information on those pages that I need to have on me 24/7. I could fit it all without the chronodexes and contacts (there are a lot of contacts) but I need them too! And I need to see the chronos next to the dailies. So...
After a hard mental smacking on one´s forehead I found a fabulous tidbit of fancy ring binders. COIN COLLECTORS! They have fabulous (albeit them being faux- leather...), very traditional ring binders in A5 and A4- sizes. I ordered one of both in dark green and then I found out a shop that is situated fairly close to my cloisters.
So now I´m left with either 1. Carrying a huge brick of an A5 or 2. Carrying an A4. Either way, it´ll be quasi-mental even as a scenario but I need to do what I NEED to do instead of want to do. We´ll see. We´ll see...
