Free For All Friday No 272

Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are in the middle of our cold dark days. When the weather is cold and grey I tend to gravitate to planner covers that are brightly colored: strong reds or cheerful pinks. When it's sunny and warm in the summertime I go back to cooler and darker colors.

Do you find you choose certain types of colors or patterns for your planner covers during different times of the year?

And as always on Fridays feel free to discuss anything Filofax-related!

  1. My filos are mostly either Red or Black, for some reason, the exception being an early 90's Sherwood Personal in tan leather. But the Black ones have been sidelined since my first Red one turned up (A5 Pimlico) - they're acting as storage binders at the moment and I've been in one Red or the other continuously. Currently I'm in an A5 red Portobello, which appears to be made of Saffiano leather and is a beautiful rich bright red shade.

Maybe I'm just a Big Red Book kinda guy... or maybe it's just that where I live seems to be a bit grey a lot of the time!

    1. Hi Paul; I'm also definitely smitten by red filos. The brighter, the better! I think that I generally prefer bright, clean, clear colors year around. I do not like the colors that many planners come in: Burgundy, brown, black, grey, navy... I don't like any of these.

    2. Hi Paul, how are you finding the A5 Portobello? I've been looking for one, so if you don't use yours anymore, I'd be interested in buying it.

  2. I'm in my recently purchased (from Adspot) Red personal Chameleon. I love it because it definitely cheers me up on these winter days! During the summer I may return to my Ochre personal Malden.

  3. Still in my crimson Malden over here - I don't know if it brings me cheer, but it definitely brings me comfort :)

  4. I like lighter colors in the spring and summer and darker colors in the fall and winter. My compact Luxe is a rich brown color. I will have to use it in all seasons since it is my only compact binder. I have been using some very slim notebooks that have about 70 numbered pages and an index section at the front. They are rather functional because I can list the contents in the index by page number and easily flip to the page. I could also take the pages out and trim and punch them to fit in my A5 Boston; however I am keeping them in tact because the pages are a different size than Filofax paper. I can slide the notebook in the back pocket of my A5 Boston. After trimming and punching Franklin Covey weekly pages for my A5 Boston, I found the pages to not work well with Filofax materials. The FC pages are less wide and taller than Filofax paper. Also the extra note page in between each week takes up more space in the rings. Nonetheless, I am using them. I would like to make or design my own insert for the next time. My A5 Boston is a stay at home binder and I don't need something fancy. Anyway have a nice weekend.

  5. Only dug out my Logic A5 a few days ago but after a makeover I'm feeling the love for Filofax all over again. After spending FAR too long on their site I am considering a Penny bridge to replace my purse, as I like the security of the zip round. I also want to get a Swift for at home and for more creative areas of my life.

  6. I used dark colors for years - it was really all that was available. But for about 5 years I've been going for the brighter colors. My FC is green and I have a vintage pink Malden. I wouldn't mind if that were brighter but it was the only choice I had at the time. At least it's not black or brown. I'm tired of those.

  7. Is it possible to buy the plastic flyleaf from Filofax? The one in my Malden has a couple of chips on the corners and I really like having it for drawing cutting lines on custom pages.

    1. Why not make your own using clear acetate A4 - available from stationers? Simply cut to size and punch. Easy-peasy!

    2. I wasn't sure what it was. I tried making one out of a notebook cover but I didn't feel it was accurate enough to use as a pattern. I'll look for acetate.

  8. I tend to rotate my A5 work filos according to my mood, rather than the season, hency spring green chameleon at the mo, about to switch out to emerald or turquoise finsbury .. 120 days of rain - give or take - would restrict my rotation way too much :)

  9. Living in the Souther hemisphere, it's just sun or rain so no real seasonal changes. I swap out according to mood. Which for me is mostly pinks.

  10. Even though I am in California and we are having 70-75 degree days (much too hot) I can't seem to get out of my red personal Portland even though I have a new shimmery aubergine L'Agenda and a Mia.

  11. I'm in a Springboard, so my colour scheme is purple and green. It's beautiful!

  12. Most definitely...I tend to use orange, brown or tan in the fall; black, purple or grey in the winter. Come spring/summer I'm into blues, greens, aquas. I'm not a pink girl. Now I'm wondering why I'm saving that aqua Malden for March. Seems I should be using that bright, happy color during this drab, dreary winter!

I've also been craving a white/nearly white binder and a pastel one in very very pale mint green or pink/rose. Yes, I said above I'm not a pink girl but was referring to the more popular bright pinks. I think a Finsbury would look lovely in pale mint green and pale, almost white pink. Very soft and feminine like a pastel angora sweater that I have. And I would most definitely use the pastel in the snowy winter!

  13. I like colorful leather no matter what the season :D My darkest planner is brick red, the rest are blue, teal or orange.
