Free For All Friday No. 287

Steve's last FFAF got me thinking about all the good reasons why I choose to use a Filofax, and that there will definitely be people who don't 'get it', especially with the popularity of the smartphone. I have one relative that makes fun of me for being an enthusiastic user, but I think that they would benefit greatly from using one as they have a busy life and it could help them in so many ways.
Do you know someone that you would like to buy a binder for, and why?

And as it's Friday, please feel free to discuss anything Filofax or ring bound organiser related. Here's to a great weekend for us all.

  1. Is there anywhere that has A5 lined paper, but in a landscape format. Have searched the web using various keyword combinations without success.
    Thanks in advance.

    1. How about buying A4 lined paper, cutting it in half and then punching it, that will then give you A5 landscape lined paper ?

  2. I would prefer / like the punched area to be clean, and line-free.

  3. How about using the template in the FILES section on this site? http://philofaxy.com/files/FilofaxA5lined.pdf You can alter the word doc yourself as required.

  5. Don't know why, but I have re-ignited my love for Seyes paper recently. Maybe it reminds me of sunny holidays in France and the excitement of stationery buying. xx

  6. Those who rely exclusively on smartphones are subject to power outages, internet outages, signal strength, and the random whims of carriers (and occasionally, governments). A paper planner has none of those drawbacks, and is completely off the grid and private, for those worried about electronic snoops (commercial, governmental, and otherwise).

  9. Does anyone have any thoughts about Filo inserts from Paperchase?
They seem alluringly inexpensive and a whole range of inserts, but wondered if anyone used them and what they thought.

    1. I've used the white lined notepaper in Personal and Pocket sizes. The paper quality is quite good. The line spacing is a bit larger than Filofax paper.

    2. I've used the white, coloured and kraft brown lined paper for personal and A5 - its good stuff for sure

    3. I've used most of them. I actually prefer then To Do inserts to the FF branded ones. The coloured edge makes it easy to locate my to do list. They are good quality and inexpensive.

    4. Paperchase do an 18 month A5 diary with a week to two pages view from July 2014 to December 2015 for £6, with the usual set of dividers included.
Not bad value at all, and far easier to maintain a Filo at that price & quality

  10. Some of you FF enthusiasts are likely using the Davinci inserts that use Tomoe River paper that have been mentioned a few times here. I initially found that while the inserts are excellent for fountain pen use they gave problems trying to print with laser printer. At first I was seeing 100% paper jams with my printer (Brother Hl2270DW); the paper seemed to be too thin to go through the mechanism without crumpling just before the fuser. I have discovered there is a printer setting that greatly reduces the incidence of jamming with the thin Tomoe River paper. On my printer you have to drill down through the printer menu while in MS Word as follows: Printer Properties/Advanced Tab/Other Print Options/Improve Print Output/ then select Reduce Paper Curl. I make use of a lot of printed pages in one of my FFs and the ability to laser print onto the TR paper is a big plus for me. There may well be a similar setting on other printers that will help if you delve into the menus. Hope this helps someone else and have a great w/e (we are celebrating Queen Victoria's birthday, an official holiday here in Ontario, this weekend).

    Regards,

    Dave.

    1. I know David Popely and others have recently adopted the Da Vinci and are impressed. I love the thinness of them and the fact that they are fountain pen friendly but my first thought on touching them was that they would jam the printer. Good to know there is an anti-curl option on some printers. Alas, not on mine. If and when I buy them, I will keep DV paper for handwritten notes, and stick to standard paper for printed inserts.
