Free For All Friday - No 409 by Steve

Pockets.... the ones in your organiser that is.  I've been using the Filofax Heritage A5 Compact for nearly 3 weeks now, it doesn't have any pockets in the covers at all, oddly I'm not missing them.

Stuff I used to keep in the pockets, things I need to carry with me, I have found alternative solutions to keeping them safe and secure separate to my organiser. But I rarely need to retrieve these documents, may be once a month if that.

So what do you keep in the pockets of your organiser?

Of course this being a Friday you are free to discuss anything really... preferably ring bound planner related.

Have a good weekend.

  1. Amongst other odd things:
Slips of paper which I use to brain dump - I have a pocket today ruler (from Franklin Covey), and once I've written something on there I put it in the ruler.
Paperclips and elastic bands. They come in handy in all sorts of places.
Plasters - I keep my money and cards in my planner too, so anything else that would go in there comes over!
Safety pins, 2 of - for wardrobe emergencies. I had the hem come down on some trousers 2 minutes after I got to work one day and this saved me. You can also use paperclips but they're a bit more obvious!
A MODUS - a card size piece of metal which has ruler markings and all sorts on it. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/669471165/modus-ultimate-11-in-1-portable-sketching-tool).
A card with my personal information on. This is kept somewhat out of sight, but it's useful in places like doctor's offices, opticians, and anywhere I have to give out my name/phone number/address/email address - I let them use it and then they copy the information, then give it back.

  2. My Finsbury pockets are stuffed, I have a letter that I need to take for an appointment next week so I don't lose it. spare paperclips just in case, photo of family, pocket ruler and page tags, a keepsake and some washi in the front, in the back pocket I have a small bookmark, a little notepad, and some recently received happy post :)

  3. I never keep much in the pockets, just had a look in my Kensington:
    1) Nothing in the credit card slots or left hand slip pocket
    2) Nothing in the right hand slip pocket
    3) Camera SD card, plastic arrow bookmark & receipts in the zipped pocket.
    Have a great weekend :)

  4. I have also switched to my Personal Heritage about a month ago and l don't miss the pockets at all. Not havin any made me realize that what l used to carry in my former planners pockets was not that necessary after all as l can very well spend my days without all the business cards, stamps, paper clips etc l used to stuff my pockets with. The plasters and safety pins go into my beauty pouch along with tissues and lipstick so l have managed to teduce the weight of my handbag which is a bonus for me.

  6. I use my binder as a wallet to reduce the amount of items in my bag, so I carry bank cards, customer loyalty cards, my ID, receipts and coupons. I also carry notes that haven't been transferred to my notes section yet - a result of changing the binder size every now and then :) Some business cards are also found in the pockets, and sometimes cash.

  7. I recently upgraded my Filofax. I was using a black Holborn Slimline, which is a beautiful thing. I didn't ordinarily use the pockets, except when travelling. When travelling, they are the ideal place to keep train tickets, seat reservations, boarding passes and so forth.

To see whether A5 would be better for me, I switched to a Filofax Clipbook. Like the Heritage, these have no pockets. This worked perfectly, and the Clipbook is naturally slimline, even with 25mm rings. I found that I wasn't missing the pockets at all.

I now have a garnet Lockwood, being persuaded that A5 is the size for me, and the only thing in the pockets is a book of postage stamps that used to be in my wallet. The Holborn? In Paris, helping my sister. (-:

  8. The pockets of my Personal Original don't get much use. On the left, my I.C.E. card with my doctor's business card taped to the back. On the right, a bookmark and a cutout of a Minion peeking out. Now the zip pouch, these are the things that travel from one binder to another. That holds a few postage stamps, color coding stickers, a magnifier strip, a slice of a Mr. Clean magic Eraser (there has to be a shorter name for this), and a nail file. The A5 Original, absolutely nothing. Yet.

    1. I've just updated my I.C.E. card and made multiples, which saves me taking it from one Filofax wallet to put in the other. The debit card has to move each time I use a different wallet, though. I very rarely put items in the card pockets and use plastic credit card holders instead.

  9. I'm a keen user of pockets and have loved organisers like the Holborn Slimline which has loads!

I've recently downsized to a Filofax Lockwood Pocket Slim which only has three pockets - and one of those is for a business card. There's a guest post coming on Philofaxy very soon where you'll be able to read how I've got on!

    2. I considered a Filofax pocket binder but I do not prefer the small sheets. It would be less comfortable to write on the small pages next to the rings than the pages of the Flex pocket cover. The Lockwood looks nice.

  10. Only in the last two weeks I have I made baby steps back into the Filofax world, with the purchase of a beautiful black Personal Finsbury. I've got my credit cards in a plastic page so my pockets have a small Wilco notepad, some stickies and Post-its and two Marks & Spencer vouchers in them. Must spend those vouchers. Perhaps a stroll round their stationery department is in order...

  11. I go back and forth between using my organiser as a wallet+planner, or planner only. Even when my wallet is in a separate card case, I tend to use the secretarial or full height pocket for receipts.

Currently using a Pocket Chameleon as both, so the full width pocket holds receipts, the front card slots are full and the full height pocket holds folded cash.

  12. FC classic, small post its and a paper that I need for my son's appt. FF Holborn personal I use as a wallet. I use cash envelopes so one pocket has food money, one gas money, one for personal expense money, and the other for random cash/papers. I personally think the Holborn is the best invention on the planet, the pockets are the greastest design!

  13. I use a zipp compact, either Pennybridge or Malden as my purse-organiser-combination. Into the divers pockets go: cash cards, personal ID-card, notes&coins, stemps, business cards, public service map, tooth picks, refreshing cloth sealed within an airtight minipocket. Ah, yes receipts and dentist pass are also in the back pocket plus a penloop card in the first front pocket (is a cut to size Flex penloop holder). This replaced the original FF penloop, which I cut off the organiser. Filofax hack for a better closing moment ;-) So, everyone can see from my description that my organiser needs to have loads of pockets in order to be considered by me.
