Reader Question - Help identify this vintage organiser.

Hello Philofaxy team,

We received this from Linda, can you help identify this make and model of organiser? Leave a response in the comments or email me steve@philofaxy.com
I have a lovely old diary/planner that I got in 1991 and had never thought much about the brand until now. And now it's driving me nuts because I cannot work out who made it. I am happy to keep using it but if I could get another of the same beautiful leather I would like to. Of course in my searching I've seen and now fallen in love with lots of other brands and I can feel an obsession coming on.

Anyway I am hoping you might recognise it and be able to tell me who made it. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Regards

Linda

Free For All Tuesday No 311

Tuesdays is the day we open the floor to you all to ask questions or discuss anything ring bound planner related.

Don't be shy to ask a question, we were all 'beginners' once me included. Don't think oh it is silly to ask a simple question that has been asked before.

Fire away with those questions and the answer might already be on Philofaxy, but yes I know it's not always easy to find particular posts.

Guest Post - John Rocha A5 size Binder in Black - Anthony

Thank you to Anthony for sending in this short guest post on an organiser I'd not come across before, they have appeared in Debenhams in UK.

Recently I was visited our local branch of Debenhams Store and to my surprise there was a display of John Rocha Binders in real leather.

There was a choice of black or brown. I inspected all of them paying close attention to the alignment of the rings, 30mm, most were good. The ring mechanism on most of the binders when using the tabs to open required a huge effort to open.

I finally settled on one in black. Inside there is a 2017 diary a week on two pages, followed by tabs: Yearly Planner, Notes, Reminders, Meetings an A to Z index pages at the rear.

The quality of the paper is very close to the Cotton Cream, the paper weight around 90gsm. At the front there are eight horizontal cards slots, a zipped vertical pocket with leather pull tab and beneath that a full size inner pocket.

There is no pen loop or Today Page Marker. There is a substantial 12mm wide elastic loop which keeps the binder in a closed position.

I have to admit after only a very short time I’d decided to buy and wondered why the binders were here in the store. There is of course a section of John Rocha fashion clothes the display was in this area.

The full price was £42.00 the sale price £12.00 needless to say I am delighted with my purchase.

Thank  you Anthony, these look very good value for money, especially being leather.

Experience User - Maria

This week I would like to thank Maria for sharing with us how she uses her organisers.
My name is Maria. I am a 39 year old librarian from Denmark.

1: When did you start using a organiser?

For many years I used the kind of spiralbound calendars you would get for free, but in 2007 I started using a Filofax.

2: How has your use of an organiser changed over the years?

I used to only record a couple of things: homework/working hours, a few to-dos and small notes if something special happened.

From 2007-2011 I used my mini Lyndhurst, always with a week per view or week per page. I carried a whole year of inserts and I only used my Filofax for my private life and just noting down my work schedule.

In 2012 I bought a plastic Hello! Project organiser in pocket size, and from them on I started exploring the Filofax world, including different sizes, systems and diary formats. … and of course multipens, sticky notes, washi, you name it.

I used my Nokia E71 for work to-dos, but as my work became more complex, keeping my work to-dos in my phone became too crowded and I started using my Filofax for work as well.

3: Which diary format works best for you and why?

After I combined my work and private life in my Filofax I found daily pages works best for me. I only use daily pages with a timetable. I block out meetings and appointments on the left side of the page for a better overview of how much time I have for my to-dos. On the right side of the page I write my to dos. I also use monthly pages, but I have a special use for them.

4: What other information do you keep and maintain in your organiser?

I use Filofax month on two pages as a record of the year. I write down my actual working hours to the left and any events I want to remember in the little squares. I have to use a 0.3 to write in the monthly pages, 0.4 is too big. I only keep these monthly pages as I trash my daily pages after a month.

I also keep my health tracker, a few pages with work info, my goals, my yearly tracker and my zone-cleaning schedule in my Filofax. I draw out my trackers on pocket sized 3 mm squared paper I have cut down to mini size.

5: Do you use a 'system' of organisation, and how does it work in your Filofax?

After discovering DIYfish I have been using the same system with minor tweaks. I print my DIYfish simple daily layout v5s3 at 85 % on 70gsm paper and it fits perfectly in my mini. I use a Hi Tec C Slims and write down work in black, private in red. Completed to-do is crossed out in black, transferred to-do in red.

I only keep 3 months of daily pages in my Filofax. For future planning I either use DIYfish monthly foldout pages or post-its on a dashboard. For long time planning I use a DIYfish resized One Year Calendar A6 where I write birthdays, holidays and to-do only occurring once or twice per year. It doesn't matter if I am in a pocket or a mini, it is the same system I am using.

6: What routines and structures do you use?

Every night I write :) or :( in my health tracker. Saturday or Sunday I prepare for the next week.

7: Do you use one binder or several, and if several, how do you use them?

I only use one at a time, but I own many. I have several favourites: my Pocket Luxe Ebony and my Ochre Maldens in mini and pocket, but for a long time – it is all relative, but 7 months is a long time for me – I have been using a mini. Most of the time I have been using my Guildford Extra Slim. I find that if I am not using my Filofax enough, changing the binder helps weeding out unnecessary stuff and making a fresh start.

Thank you Maria,

Free For All Friday - No 426

I can remember the first time I read this post by Nan from May 2007 (nearly 10 years ago!!) and thinking that is sound advice. I will remember that in future.

As the title indicates 'Cooling-off period' applies to your planner set up in the same way to any other change you make in your regular daily routines.

Don't make too many changes at once if you are going to evaluate to see if they make a difference or not.

And my point in repeating this mantra today is because it is this time of year when people get tempted to change too many things in their planner set up and it can go horribly wrong within a few weeks of changing....

So have you changed your set up for 2017?

However, as this is a Friday, you can of course discuss anything Filofax or Ring bound organiser related.

A5 or A6?

Tune in this week to see which size works best for the gruesome twosome.

Cycles of buying and selling - by Anita

Since purchasing my first Filofax back in 2009, I admit that I've purchased many and if I'd kept them all I'd have quite an impressive collection by now. However, as a minimalist at heart, I've never wanted to own too many, so tend to sell to fund the new one and also to keep numbers down. I can sometimes be a little bit hasty in selling, but I feel grateful for the variety that I've been able to explore with all my sales and purchases.

Whilst I've enjoyed this in the past, I guess that I've had enough and that's what my zero spend was useful for, even if I didn't ultimately stick to it... I've spent a fair amount of time wanting to own just one binder, but with more experience understand that I do enjoy more variety.

I've spent a bit of time looking back at past purchases and figured out my preferences and needs:
  • I have given up on the A5 size once and for all - my focus is so much on my main binder that I don't look at it. My A5 Leuchtturm notebook is working much better for me for when I need extra space for planning projects, or making more in-depth notes
  • Any binders need a suitable layout to be used as a wallet - I don't always combine my planner and wallet, but do so when travelling and like the option to be able to
  • I like black binders, but also need some colour - I'm using my Kensington to process some old notes and will move back into it in the spring or summer
  • I always come back to red - I mentioned in a previous post that the colour of a Filofax doesn't matter so much to me, but I now understand that it does, especially in the darker winter months
  • I like croc prints - have owned multiple Ascots, Amazonas and my Dundee
  • I'm still tempted/curious about the A6 paper size, but sold my vintage Mulberry as all my supplies are in personal size. However, I don't own as much as I thought that I did, didn't spend that much on it and I do have other paper that I could cut into A6 size. Also, paper in that size from the Stationery Emporium is much cheaper than inserts from Filofax.
For me personally, this little journey has been about working out what I need and want, with the idea of keeping my favourites so that I won't feel the need to buy any more. It's not about depriving myself, but taking the time to find the ones that I will feel content with. If I owned a larger collection and wanted to downsize, I would spend some time using each one to identify their pros and cons and ultimately if I enjoy using them. Right now, the optimum number seems to be three for me. I may reduce that in future, but I'm resisting that temptation currently to ensure that I don't start looking around for something else...
