  1. Ok, I’ve had an A4 Filofax for years and it’s quite battered. Primarily used as a appointment diary, place to store odd paper and comfort blanket. My question is do I just get a new A4 diary or downsize to an A5?

  2. Should I get a new A4 Organiser or drop down to A5 size? Currently have a 20 year old battered A4 organiser used as diary, work appointments, storage for odd pieces of paper/docs and comfort blanket?

  3. I would stay with A4, I have had an A4 Durham in continuous use for 17 years and although the zip-around has long gone its still the best fax I have ever had. I run a small charity and everything to do with that is contained there, accounts to membership lists. I am also membership sec. of my radio club. All on paper and to all intents and purposes, invisible to thieves. Over the years I have lost/had stolen, laptops, bags, wallets and a coat but no one bothers with an old fax.

And of course, exactly the same as you, I would be bereft if it was not there and I have become accustomed to the slight stoop on my left hand side from carrying it with me. I think I shall be buried with it.

  4. I'm looking for a thin ring binder to be my next planner. I'm moving from a Roterfaden which uses A5 inserts. To me, the big positives to that system are 1) paper quality (when you buy high quality inserts) and 2) thin form factor. However, I miss being able to 1) rearrange pages and 2) scan pages to PDF. I used a Franklin Planner many years ago before my calendar and address book went digital. Living in the U.S., the Franklin Planner Desk/Classic size (5.5" x 8.5") seems to be the easiest to manage because that's 1/2 of a letter-sized page. I would appreciate feedback on 1) should I consider A5 ring binders because ... and 2) "thin" ring binders for FP Desk or A5 sizes.

  5. If this duplicates another post, I apologize. I received an error message when I tried the first time. Basically, I'm looking to switch from A5 inserts (Roterfaden) to either an A5 or Classic (5.5" by 8.5") thin ring planner. 1) Any comments on A5 vs Classic? (I'm in the U.S.; so, Classic is exactly a 1/2 sheet of the most common paper used here.) 2) Suggestions for thin (light) ring planners in those sizes?

    1. You have to decide on your bottom line. Is it ring size? weight of the binder? insert design? paper size availability? Hole spacing? Do you want to buy inserts or print them? Binder design - zipper closure, snap closure, no closure, pocket layout? You have a research project ahead of you, but the good news is that older posts on this blog are an AMAZING resource.
I switched from a Franklin Planner Classic (half letter) because the FP Classic was giving me a constant back ache. I tried a Filofax personal for my calendar and tickler system along with a letter size planner for time tracking. The letter size planner took up too much space on my desk. I didn't want to go back to the FP Classic because of the weight, so I went to Filofax A5. At that time, I could not find a FP/Day-Timer binder with smaller rings and no zipper. I buy inserts from Filofax. I just have to make mental adjustments for my American brain.
