Dear Filofax

Thank you for being my little oasis of calm in these days of beeping smartphones, full email inboxes and always-on gadgets.

Now don't get me wrong, I like gadgets as much as the next person and own an iPod touch, an e-reader and a (newly acquired) MacBook Pro. However, I can sometimes find all the updates and notifications a little overwhelming, so with a sigh of a relief I'll sit down with my trusty binders and some redbush tea.

Technology is great, but updating the Filofax operating system is much easier as all I do is open the rings, remove the contents and replace! If Malden 2.0 gets a little buggy I can easily restore my inserts and layout to an earlier version. I love that my Filofaxes will just get better with age instead of the inevitable slowdown and issues that can come about with older technology.

Yes, that's another A5 Malden in the background...
For me, it's never been an either or situation when it comes to paper vs. technology. I curled up on my bed recently to do some proof reading work with my Mac, but made my notes in my A5 binder. I might use Google calendar, but my personal Malden is the first thing I reach for when I need to jot down something or work out what needs doing next.

So, I salute you, my Filofaxes, and thank you for helping me feel a little less crazy in my daily life!

  1. Great post!

I had similar feelings today. I stacked my 'storage' Filofax's back on my shelf and I thought to myself, this is the best investment I have ever made :)

  2. Hi Anita,

I completely agree with you. As much as I love my iPhone, if I had to choose, I'd rather pick my trusty FiloFax.

I am new to this blog so perhaps you've already done a post on this, but I'd love to hear what other people do with the contents of their FF when it comes to clearing out time. I'm about to take out last year's diary insert and other used infills, and it seems a shame to throw them away when I may them look so pretty and inserting. Why would I possibly save them though? If anyone has written about what to do with used infills before, I'd appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

    1. Welcome Katie!

I recently did a post about archiving pages:

      http://philofaxy.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/non-annual-archiving.html

In it I refer to Patty's 20 years of archived pages that she wrote about here:

  3. Hi Anita
Many thanks for a very thought provoking, sensible and wonderful post. I couldn't agree more. There's no need to plug in to recharge, "where's the nearest power point" or worry about anti virus, firewall and other sundry updates etc. Inserting next years calendar, when it is due, is far quicker than many of the updates that are required. I am also a fully paid up member of the M.A.S. :-))

  4. I think you said it beautifully for all of us - there is just something about putting pen to paper that is more personal, thoughtful and therapeutic! I do use an iPhone and the calendar option as well as a Mac Pro, too but it's clinical, cold and doesn't have that warm, earthy texture and aroma Filofax leathers do! Filofax forever!!

  5. 'What is the clock speed of your Filofax'.... As fast or as slow as I want it to be... it doesn't crash if I stop in mid process be it for one minute, hour or day... mind you the later is a little extreme... !

I find organising in my Filofax, a calming and productive activity.

  6. Not to mention the fact that it's one thing the NSA can't snoop on!! :-)

Hi all, I'm new to Philofaxy and actually new to Filofaxes too, but I'm quickly getting the hang of it. And loving it! And loving this blog too as well as all the other Filofax blogs linked to on here.
