Too Precious To Use?

I came across this post for inclusion in the next webfinds this morning..

http://www.seelen-zucker.de/2013/08/goodbye-gillio.html

Is any organiser so precious and perfect and expensive you couldn't bring yourself to use it on a daily basis?

Do you have any in your collection that you treat with kid gloves?

  1. I have a Personal Connaught Real Nubuck Leather (it reads on the inside of this Filofax). I've used it maybe once or twice and had kept it stored away. Then,packing/moving/relocating I thought she was lost to me...now found she's in need of care for the Nubuck leather a tad, but recently she was unpacked again, and I dressed her up, putting in Filofax papers, dividers etc., added some charms and dressed her up and then sat her on the shelf where I could see her. But I'm afraid of hurting the leather if I put her in my purse/bag even though she'd be separated from other purse stuff as I'd keep her wrapped up in my purse...well I worry! What if she gets dinged up or scratched again. Gasp! So yes, this one is very precious to me..had her since the early to mid '90's and I baby her so much now! I let her sit and watch me on the computer, she reads the Philofaxy blog on a daily basis (she loves it lol!), or she listens to music, but alas she is housebound because I don't want her in tatters! She is my Precious!
    Sigh....

  2. Definitely! My personal ochre Malden! Although I have used it more than any other of my daily Filofaxes, every time I did I was really concerned about scratching it, as I have long and sharp nails, so eventually it just stayed on the shelf. I even considered getting a second personal ochre Malden so I could use one, but have my first one stay pristine on my shelf! Now I don't use personal Filofaxes any more so it's not being used :( But it is my favourite of all my Filofaxes, and I'd never ever get rid of it!

  3. I am not a collector, but a user of planners, so there is not one I would consider too precious to use on a daily basis.

  4. Yes, my Ivory Deco personal Filofax is too precious to use, and to take out of the house. Plus it's heavy so I don't like to carry it. But I enjoy using it at home for permanent reference information.

  5. My Original Filofax isn't too precious to use but keeping the yellow leather clean is a nightmare! I have had to start keeping it in a drawstring bag while I'm not using it just to keep it spotless. Even when it was just sat on the shelf at home it attracted dirt and marks. I had fallen in love with a yellow Gillio planner that was shared on their Facebook page but I know now I would never be able to use it and keep it clean so I won't bother saving up for that one :(

  6. I used to feel that filofaxes were meant for daily use and naturally become marked and scuffed. That's part of their charm for me. I've come to change my mind a bit: I can't imagine a scruffy Deco, Osterley or Panama (for example). My Tejus wasn't expensive but I'd never be able to get another. It's the only one I have that I'd hate to get worn or scratched. Like Laurie I keep it at home for reference information, in a safe place.

    1. I have a Tejus, too and it's the only binder I have I've never used. It's brand new in box and I just couldn't even bear to train it to lay flat. So it holds spare inserts and stays in the original box.

  7. Absolutely not. They are just things, objects.

  8. I personally wouldn't buy something that I would consider too precious to use...

  9. Like Joseph, I also consider myself a user instead of a collector of Filofaxes. I think that's why I've sold so many over the years as I can't bear owning stuff that isn't being used. I want to enjoy & use my possessions & get rid of anything else really.

  10. How nice that you take my blogpost as a basis for a discussion. ;)

When I bought my Gillio course I wanted to use it with all my heart - but when he was in front of me I had a problem with it. We all know how to lose very expensive Filofax organizer after a few months of its value, although they were partially or not at all barely used. Look at the prices yet on Facebook or Adspot ... This loss of value I might cope for 100 € at a Filo, but not in a Gillio of 400 €.

  11. I have many little many collections: pens, bags, yarn, and now Filofaxes. But they must all be used in some way. I don't collect just for the sake of collecting even if it takes time or I don't use the item often. I'm too practical for that I guess. I'd always want to find some use out of it.

  12. I have a lovely fluoro pink Original that I was going to use for horse related planning. I thought twice about it and opted not to because the BRIGHT pink does show a fair amount of dirt and barns tend to be dirty. Now I'm using my red Epi Louis Vuitton planner for the ponies.

  13. I open my china cabinet everyday and use the beautiful teacups and saucers that belonged to my aunt. On the same note, I use my planners (I have an Osterly and a Malden) without fear of damaging them. I will use them until they are worn and have to be replaced. Scratches and dings? Of course! but who cares? I dont want to own anything that is too precious to use for its intended purpose.

  14. The topic seelenzucker wanted to show is not, whether to use an expensive organiser or not. As the answers show, many of us are using really expensive binders (100 or even 200€ worth) every day.
To me it's more the question, whether the binder is worth its financial value. The Gillio compagna Croco seemed not to show the quality promised by the high price. The relationship between the price and its quality, or let's say its durability and its standing the test in daily use, was not adequate.
Especially facing such a high price...
I guess that's what Seelenzucker wanted to show.
And I must admit, that she kind of "washed my head".

    1. Hmm may be that detail got lost in the translation! Sorry!

But I think the question posed is still a fair one to ask, even if it's not directly related to that post.

    2. Yes, Steve, you're absolutely right!
The question is very interesting as we can see in the great number of comments!
It's something, everyone of us special people ;-) is concerned with...

  15. Yes, I have wanted to but don't use my buttercup in Ostrich and my lovely black Eton. I want to preserve them for posterity!

    1. Why not use the ostrich? Mine has gotten even more beautiful after I decided to stop being afraid of damaging it! ^_^ which sizes do you have? (Eton and Ostrich.)

  16. I brought the Olympic in chocolate and ended up getting a new filofax for daily use because I was worried about ruining it. I'm now using the Holborn as my every day planner even though it cost more and now has scratchs and was the unfortunate victim of my rabbits teeth (at least I know its mine lol)

  17. I think that as long as it is in the current range, so that a replacement could be purchased in the event of loss, theft, or damage, then I would say USE IT! As a friend of mine reminds me "we're a short time here and a long time gone!"

  18. I use my planners well but I want to keep them in good condition. I don't own too many planners, and I don't want to buy extra ones to have as back ups or to switch them according to season. I do however switch them based on size and function.

  19. One of my other interests is collecting fountain pens. Mainly vintage. Some quite rare and expensive. It isn't unusual for me to be carrying the better part of £1000 in writing instruments - one of my favourites is a modern Stipula with a replacement value in excess of £400, others are older than me and very difficult to repair if broken. But all of them get used - some more often than others - because that is what they are for.

There is an ongoing argument in the field of stylophilia: whether rare items which are in mint or original condition should be inked and used, or preserved unused for future generations. For the lesser rarities I would fall on the user end of the spectrum, while others presented with even relatively common modern items will preserve them untouched - there was a recent post on the Fountain Pen Network about someone who owned tens of thousands of pounds worth of Montblanc limited edition pens which had never been removed from their sealed wrappings.

While I am not saying that I would ink up a mint Mandarin Yellow Duofold Senior and sling it in my pen case, I would have no compunction about using less rare and fragile items such as a Montblanc 139. A planner, however expensive, is still just a thing... How many people love and use filos in Ostrich and Lizard without feeling the need to baby them?

  20. I'm generally careful with my things, but more careful with the Baroques only because I use them all the time and they'd be hard to locate. And because the leather is thin. So far, they've been quite hardy though so I try not to worry too much.

  21. That is what I felt about my Eton, but I also could not justify having that value just still looking pretty on the shelf, so I sold it.

  22. In a word, no. I use everything I own. If you own it and love it then use it and enjoy it.

  24. Oh how I wish there was a photo of it! But this is a tough question. I feel EVERY planner I have is too beautiful to use on a daily basis. However, I spent over $500 on my Louis Vuitton planner and you better be SURE I use that thing faithfully! But if it were a more rare planner, I might have to treat it with kid gloves too :(

  25. I can't help but recall a modern proverb the gist of which is...ships are safest in the harbor but that's not what they're built for. Use for its intended purpose or sell.

  27. Yes, oh my god, my cream DECO. The inner mat skin is very difficult to clean or I don't know the correct way to do so? I prefer my finsbury which leaves me a peaceful mind.

  28. Thank you so much for the wonderful book! I finished it a few days ago and cannot get it out of my head. It is pure magic. It was everything I hoped it would be and much more. ...

  29. I hop from my personal Osterley to my Malden to my Kensington to my Windchester like some women change purses. I would not buy one and never use it. As folks have said before me, I use it as a tool for living.

  30. The fear of using my best filofaxes has been obvious since I purchased my Deco a few years ago. I was too worried that everyday use would ruin them--and I stopped trying to use most of them. And then came the Gillio -- and I was in love from the very beginning - I ended up purchasing a colour that I already had in my Filofax collection.
    I had just spent over $300 to buy a planner that I really didn't need-especially since I haven't worked since 2009!

And now I have to admit that I followed this purchase with another one that won't be available until late October. Another long wait.
But i did do one thing right-I sold every single planner that I had, but would not use. Now I have 6 left including the Gillio. And I plan to sell that one too.

So-I put it to you, Steve--are we collecting them? Is this a competition? Or are we merely following each other into the Gillio experience? All I know is that they are sold out of most of their Compagnas, and as they have told us-they are close to selling out all of their stock that isn't even there yet.
Because I don't think that this is happening solely out of a fear of use.

  31. I have no problem, using my expensive binders.Sure I take care that I won`t spill coffee on it,or keep it a way from chocolate-fingers - but that is something I always do.
My first Croco Gillio was the fuschia colour, which is more delicate, because it is a lighter colour. It still looks brandnew. And I must say that the quality of a Gillio is just phantastic!I use them on a daily base, opening them ...I don`t know...countless times each day.
I also use my Filofaxes. My Osterley shows A LOT more wear on the edges - and I don`t take the A5 with me,it is just my desk-binder.That is an expensive piece,too...right?Or the Regency...as the Osterley the inside is no real leather,I bet ;o)
For example, the Regency in Personal size costs 200 Euro. The Compagna Croco 278....I don`t think it is too expensive ;o)
I am definately not afraid of using those beauties :oD

  32. I use all my binders but then I don't own any rare or really expensive ones. I yearn to own an ochre Malden and let it get scratched and scuffed. This would be a real stretch for me because I do not like scratches, scuffs or dirt. But there is a part of me that wants to run from perfectionism and actually own and use a worn looking broken in binder. We'll see lol. If I were to ever own a Gillio or a Deco I would have to use it. I would love to own and use an Ascot. I don't want to just have it to look at.
