Thank you to Janet for this post idea...
If you had a choice of a free Filofax, which one would you choose - the one you wanted or the most expensive one?
Or if you were choosing a Filofax for a friend who you had introduced to Filofax which model and size would you pick for them?
That would depend on whether I'd be able to sell the most expensive one or not! I'd probably choose the binder I liked or wanted, though. At the moment, that's a Personal Malden in ochre.
ReplyDeleteI would choose the one I wanted the most for me, in my case I 've always wanted Adelphi in Personal or A5. For a friend, I would choose the one, which will attract the attention of my friend, in Personal for a start. If man - Fusion or Boston, if woman - something colorful like Blossom or some Original, although I like the Buttrflies in the past. :)
ReplyDeleteSadly for my wallet the ones I want always seem to BE the most expensive!! However I am lucky to now have all the Filofaxes I really want after my husband completed both my A5 Osterley collection and rhe Malden collection for my birthday ( I now have all colours) so I'd probably trawl through the Facebook groups, pick someone who is in a tricky situation and cannot afford a Filo and get what they most want as a gift for them.
ReplyDeleteI would choose Metropol A 5 :)
ReplyDeleteI'd choose the personal buttercup in Ostrich and use it for the rest of my life and give away the rest of my ff collection.
ReplyDeleteUgh! This thread made me think about the Filofax I have bought and I came to the conclusion that if I had just bought one Filofax, the personal Ostrich I would have spend less than I have now. 8-o
ReplyDeleteGood point. All the money I spent on the ones I am not using, I could have bought the Ostrich.
DeleteHolborn A5 zipped..
ReplyDeleteThe most expensive binder I want is a Gillio in yellow ostrich leather so as that wouldn't be an option I would pick the Filofax I want the most which is the aqua Malden.
ReplyDeleteThe one that I really want, which happens to be one of the most expensive... Ostrich!
ReplyDeleteIf I were buying for a friend, it depends! For my boyfriend I'd go for a simple one in black or green. Probably pocket size!
I would love an A5 Malden :o) I have a crimson pocket Malden which is gorgeous and as my daily planner it's perfect for the task but I would like an A5 to use as crafting/pattern planner and gardening planner where I could make plans and have photos to keep a record of crafty things and what I planted where in the garden :o)
ReplyDeleteI would choose the one I want and which I know I will get a lot of use out of. If it just happens to be the most expensive one, that would be a bonus.
ReplyDeleteI actually stumbled into Filofax all by my lonesome, but if I were going to choose a Filofax for a friend, I'd choose the personal Malden, because it seems to most universally-liked.
If I could go back in time, I'd snap up a blue Finsbury in either A5 or personal size before they all disappeared.
ReplyDeleteCurrently, I have all the filos I want. There isn't anything left in the compact range (my size of choice) that I don't yet own. I recall seeing an announcement here of something new that strikes my fancy, but for the life of me can't remember what that is. With that said, I'd probably go for the personal Aston. I'm not sure what I'd use it for at this point, but it looks like a lovely binder.
ReplyDeleteFor a friend, I would start them off with a personal domino, color determined by who the recipient is. It's a great basic binder and allows you to get a feel for what you want from a Filofax without spending too much money. I started with a brown domino and of course my passion grew from there.
I have all the wonderful Filos that I'd like currently, but based on past experience I'd definitely choose the one I wanted.
ReplyDeleteI agree with kanalt as I'd also start a friend off with a personal Domino.
After having acquired a long desired Personal Ostrich, I feel I have all the Filofaxes I've ever wanted. If I could go back to the recent past, I would like another Finchley (I have the Jade/Sage green family) in other colors - Teal and Pink. It lies flat, is deliciously soft with butter leather and is beautiful in it's simplicity. I currently use a Holborn Zip in A5 and Personal and they also lie completely flat, are pliable, has the kind of leather which shines/"cures" beautifully and with all their wonderful pockets, is delightfully functional.
ReplyDeleteFor a friend, I wouldn't start them with a Domino only because I don't think it represents the true quality of what Filofax once was and is in many of it's current incarnations. It's stiff and plastic - not what Filofax means to me.
Finally, I have recently been bitten and suffer chronically from the Gillio bug - so that one is next.
For me I'd get the one I want most. Currently the Personal Aqua Malden. For a friend I'd get an Original. I have 2 and LOVE them!
ReplyDeleteI'd get the one I want the most. For a friend... Difficult to say; I think my go-to would be a Kendal in personal size. I feel tha they are the nicest binder recently offered by Filofax.
ReplyDeleteJosh - what binder are you currently in? Still the FC compact?
Deleteyes, still in the FC compact, the green open binder.
DeleteThe one I want most for me is the teal/turquoise baroque, but that is just a dream as they are impossible to get.
ReplyDeleteWould also love a medium Gillio Mia Cara - again another dream.
I have very vivid (and expensive) dreams :)
For a friend I would get the personal Malden. Colour would depend on the recipient.
Sheila, le baroque en turquoise est en Suisse, je peux l'acheter pour vous et vous l'envoyer, si vous voulez, envoyez-moi un mail. chrisbleu@romandie.com.
DeleteIn english: Sheila, the baroque in turquoise is in Switzerland(Swiss), I can buy him(it) for you and send him(it) to you, if you want, send me an e-mail. chrisbleu@romandie.com.
I have this dream of my 5 children standing in a row -each with an original in the color that corresponds the the "household color code" Green, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Pink --My husband is always red, and I get what ever color is left (sometimes we share the red) But we have our own favorites--So I want a "set" of less expensive binders.
ReplyDeleteI would ask for the one I most want - I don't 'get' the point of having something just because it's the most expensive!
ReplyDeleteI would want a lime green chameleon A5 - not that they made one ... but if in the real world then I think it would have to be an A5 purple Malden ...
If buying for a friend I would choose the imperial purple Finsbury in A5 ... it's dreamy ... actually, I'd quite like one of those too!
I would definitely choose the one I WANT! If I were choosing one for a friend?.. For the money I'm paying, I would ASK them what size and style they wanted first. Any element of surprise would just be lost at that point, but I'm SURE no tears of sadness would be shed at all! I can just imagine it would be more like Christmas morning!! ~tina
ReplyDeleteas demonstrated by my current filofaxlessness, i would get the one i want - i'm waiting to get my first ever filo until the aqua malden is available in the states. for my friend, it would totally depend on their style as to style and color. i have some friends who could totally rock an osterly and others that would love an apex or a neon original.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the one I want. Which honestly right now, is nothing! I have the A5 Siena on it's way to me from the lovely Janet, which will be my third binder (I've got a personal Malden and my first binder, a Domino, that I'll never part with). My pocket Chino is being donated back to the project, so I don't count it as mine :)
ReplyDeleteAs for a friend, it would depend on which friend. I did give my best friend a pink personal Finsbury for her graduation gift - she loved it!
Oh boy... either the one I wanted or one for someone I love and think would appreciate the gesture, I believe.
ReplyDeleteI have been coveting Josh's red Winchester since he got it, so if I could find one of those I'd grab it. I am also on the hunt for a red Finchley. From the current line-up, I want the red Ostrich...I just can't make myself spend that much on one planner.
ReplyDeleteI would for sure get the one I want. For a friend, it would depend on what I thought they would like the best. I'd be tempted to start a friend with a Malden, though.
ReplyDeleteI'd get the one I wanted. Right now that would be a navy Malden in either personal or A5 (pretty please filofax gods make me one). For a friend I'd get a personal sized Saffiano or Domino if they were new to filofaxes and a Malden or Calipso (if they ever make personal sized ones) if they were already "filomaniacs" or filofreaks as my husband has so kindly named us ;)
ReplyDeleteFor me, probably the Ostrich tan or buttercup in personal size. But I won't spend that kind of money on it myself. Now if I won the lottery...!!
ReplyDeleteFor a friend, a personal Malden in ochre or aqua, or a personal Kensington in brown.
I would get the one I want, which is an A5 Malden in gray. I just lost my 16 year old cat. He was gray and I'd love a Malden to remind me of him.
ReplyDeleteI would get the one I really want, it just happens that the one I would really love to get is the Ostrich (buttercup and red). Currently there are no others that I feel I really need (although obviously *need* is a bit of an exaggeration, but you guys know what I mean - I NEED them)... For a friend, I guess it would depend on what they were going to use it for. If it was to carry everywhere I'd probably go for a compact or a personal, but if it was for home use only and they wanted space I'd probably go for an A5. The Domino is a good staple Filofax for anything, but again it would depend on the person. If it's for someone who would want to decorate the outside then I'd go for Domino or Metropol, otherwise I'd probably go for a Finsbury (as this was my first), or a Holborn as they are so soft and have so many pockets who could fail to love them?
ReplyDeleteFor me, I'd love a Malden in personal size, am still not sure if I want a grey one or an ochre one. They are slightly out of budget for me, but a girl can dream, right?
ReplyDeleteFor someone else, and I'm thinking of my sister who's a teacher, I'd go for an A5, and probably the Finsbury as Sarah Ping shows it to be a perfect tool for teachers trying to sort out the school year and those pesky students you have to deal with.
Tough questions Mr. Morton.
ReplyDeleteI used to think the Personal Ostrich in Buttercup would be a match made in heaven. I absolutely love the color and pattern, but can't help to think about those holes where the feathers have been. For goodness sake; without Playtex gloves, I don't even mess with the Thanksgiving turkey!
If choosing for me, I would go with an Personal Deco in Amethyst. Not only is it BEAUTIFUL inside and out, it's functional and the color of my birthstone.
As to choosing for my friend, it would more than likely be a Personal Malden and in a color she doesn't already have.
I would really love to have the one I wanted. As for someone else, I would give them the one that is best suited to their specific style of taste.
ReplyDeleteThe one I want *is* expensive. Siighh. Really want a Temperley Affair, deco or an plum Osterley but not gonna happen. I'd get one of those if I could. I'd also like a Purple Malden but I'd let the universe give me a more expensive one free and buy it myself. I'm not doing the best job at answering this, am I? :P
ReplyDeleteFor someone else, I must admit that I have the habit of buying other people gifts I want myself so I'd be tempted to get them a Malden or an Osterley (haha) but I'd only do that if they were already dedicated filofax fans. If they were 'new', I'd get them a Domino or a Metropol or another non leather binder. I gave my stepmum a red personal Cuban I bought (heavily discounted) that I didn't like and it's so painful watching her not use it and not buy inserts for it.
The Affair is now half price...

Although I personally do not like it, I would choose the Temperley Affair Personal and give it as a gift to a a female friend. My wife and I gave her a Filofax(Finsbury Personal) a year ago, and although she uses it daily, I think she would like the Temperley.
ReplyDeleteGreat question! I would choose the Aqua Malden probably in A5. But I'd be happy with personal as well. For a friend,,,,,first I'd have to make sure they really wanted a Filofax and would use it since I've given them as gifts and then the person never uses them. It would depend on who the friend was and what their preferences were.
ReplyDeleteI'd get the one I really wanted, if only I could decide which one that is. It would probably be the personal Deco or a vintage One in perfect condition. Like Aimless Aimee I covet Josh's Winchester but I hear the Cavendish and Portland are also sweet. And then there's the Gillio. Oh my.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting a Malden in Ochre ever since I first saw it, only problem I would have would be choosing between the personal size and the A5.
ReplyDeleteFor a friend I would probably start them out with a Metropol. Mine has held up wonderfully for almost two years, except for the stain that I managed to get on it the other week and bulging a bit it still almost looks like new. A very sturdy, nice introduction into the world of filofaxes. :)
