Free For All Friday No. 268

It's the first FFAF in the new year!

Have you settled on which diary setup you'll use this year? Or are you still tweaking your system?

As always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything Filofax-related.

Wishing you all the best in 2014!

  1. Still looking for a Filofax. I want a crimson Malden Personal. I might have to find a second choice until I can find one.

  2. I'm still tweaking my setup for both my personal and work Filofaxes (although as a teacher in Australia I have a couple of weeks left until work starts up again). I'm trying out W2P for my personal although I was leaning towards DPP. The DIYfish setup was working for me but D2P was a bit more space than I needed. W2P is working for me at the moment, but supplemented by iPhone apps and I was hoping to get everything into the planner to avoid potential technology fail.

  5. I've settled on dpp inserts. My system will be much like it was. But for the past two days I've been overhauling my entire system, meaning clearing out and reorgaizing all of my "extra" binders and inserts. I will be writing about this organization soon and will be doing a blog post series to go over all of my extra binders and what they're being used for...

  6. I am returning the inserts that I bought for my A5 Boston. Also, I probably will not keep the A5 Boston. It is too small as far as the rings to fit the purpose. I am glad that I did not set it up. It is a bit of a chore to trim and punch inserts and pages. I have bought inserts for a larger binder and I will buy the corresponding binder when it is available. It is of a different brand. Once I have the items I won't buy extra inserts for the same year again. I am using my compact Luxe as my main planner. It fits a lot and it looks nice. On a side note I saw an episode of "Cash Cab" a game show in New York. Passengers in the cash cab try to answer as many general knowledge questions as they can before they get to their destination. Each correct answer gives them money and they are allowed two wrong answers. One question was "What product has had a dramatic decline in sales due to the advent of the Palm?" The passenger answered incorrectly and said datebook. The correct answer was Filofax.

    1. Me thinks that was a very old episode! Palm was taken over (due to dire sales) by Hewlett Packard (Hp) four years ago. No Palm-branded products have been made for at least 3 years! Sadly, that hasn't helped Filofax. Now it's iPads, Androids and Moleskines that are hitting sales.

    2. Hi Tim. Yes it probably was a really old episode. I had the volume down low. I was thinking "Did he just say Palm??" The show is funny and the host makes me laugh. I have a couple of Moleskine notebooks. So Moleskine is doing well in sales even though it is a paper product?

  7. I spent all day yesterday tweaking my system! I switched from DPP with Wo1P overview to Wo2P with fold-out year overview 3 times! I redid all my tabs and set up new calendars in my work and fitness organizers as well as my primary one. I set up new Goals pages (and even started writing goals on them). I reviewed my FLYlady routines and made lists on my Wo2P calendar.

(I felt rather unproductive yesterday. Actually, I got more done than I thought.)

I'd been toying with the idea of returning to A5 for some functions, but in the end I chickened out and stuck with all Personal. Personal is my comfort zone right now. I've developed this sensibility of only using what I can fill. I wasn't really writing enough to fill up 2DPP last year, so I've gone back to Wo2P...for now anyway. Wo2P fills up so quickly, I may need the additional space after all. Also, I miss that Notes block every week!

    P. S. I love Cash Cab!

  8. My plans for setup "Pre Christmas" went up in smoke when I was completely blindsided by a "pocket ochre malden" left by Santa Claus! I am now trying to find work for 3 being used at the same time rather than 2.
My ultimate goal is to have my A5 (1DpP Business) be the one I use for Career and Grad Studies. The Personal (Wo1P) will NOT exit the house, and the Pocket (Wo2P) will be my "go-to" for everything. For the next few days I am mirroring Personal and Pocket. Any recommendations on dividing work between the two are welcome!

    1. I'm also keen for any advice anyone has on multiple planners/ work planners

    2. I second that, Laura! I've been toying around with using my A5 Holborn Zip as a "Finance Filo." It seems like a great space to keep bills, a check register, etc.

  9. My AIM is to stay in personal size ALL YEAR. I know this is fairly unlikely. But, to try and help cement that decision into reality, I have set up the whole year on Paperchase WO2P in my teal baroque, including writing in the stretching I should be doing on every single day. The hope is that, having done all that setting up, it will dissuade me from changing size over the year, but just change binder (all personal). Ha - that's the hope!
So my set-up is goals to projects to next actions in a separate binder (navy Portland) and (current) monthly lists, (this month's) weekly lists, WO2P in the baroque.

  10. I'm sticking with the Filofax Personal size wo2p set-up but will be using the lined page option this year. Wow, what a difference this has made for OCD me! I began my Filofax journey in a Pocket size but it was just a bit too small for my large handwriting. Loved the size of the Pocket though, I must admit.

  11. My set up was pretty simple on New Year's Day. Open rings, remove 2013 diary pages, insert 2014 diary pages, close rings...done! I don't see myself moving out of my Gillio Compagna binder any time soon. Unless of course I am EVER able to get my hands on a buttercup yellow ostrich Filofax in personal size. I don't see that happening any time soon either!

  12. I'm still in the Personal Zip Holborn I bought in October, and happy with it. The only big change is switching to week on 1 page.

  13. My biggest change is moving into the Franklin Quest compact with 32mm! rings that just arrived! I'm ridiculously excited - I don't think I've been so giddy about a binder since I got my first filofax about 6 months ago (I now have a considerable collection). The Franklin isn't as pretty as some of my filos, but the rings are HUGE! I love it :)

I'll be sticking with my week to view and dpp that works for me best.

    1. I think FF rings are one of those areas where size matters, haha!!

  14. Definitely sticking with Personal size, and with the standard Filofax WO2P diary. I've tweaked my custom "Monthly Planner" sheets to map goals, habits and key events and I'm really happy with the results. Overall I'm simplifying things following the principles of "Zen To Done" :-)

  15. I'm so glad the craziness of December is over and I have time to read blogs again!! It's good to be back!

After 3-ish years in my FF personal Metropol I'm going to set up in my Kikki-K medium size planner but I'm having mild palpitations as it's leather and I'm clumsy and I have 2 small children- I'm quite certain it is going to get wrecked. But the alternative is to leave it hidden in a cupboard somewhere and since I'm not enjoying it then either, I may as well use it. And I have 3 other personal size planners so if it gets scuffed to the point that I can't handle it, I can always move into something else with minimal disruption.

I'm going to try out the W2P diary inserts that come with the planner since they're there and I may as well try them anyway but I'm not really sure I'm going to like them. I have a (regular) W2P filofax set too so I can switch to those if I need to. And after reading a post by PaperLovestory, I've decided I'm going to recycle some unused past-year diary inserts as scribble paper. I want to make some new dividers too so I'm not really settled into my new setup but I'm getting there.

I also haven't decided whether I'm going to have a separate work FF (last year I just used a student diary type diary as I started in mid-March) or whether to incorporate them both into the one, since my work is 'on call' kind of thing (Mon-Sun, 6:30am- late PM, family business)

I probably should be worried that I haven't made these decisions yet but instead I'm excited by all the possibilities and discovering what really works for me.

  16. Same setup as 2013. I went through the usual annual process of analysis concerning what I need from the system, what I *might* do differently, and trialled a couple of setups in the binder (Hampstead) just to see how they looked/felt, but ended up thinking by 'old' setup cant really be improved upon at this time. So it's back to the setup I detailed for Philofaxy a few weeks ago. Still meaning to write the second part of that post!

Hope everyone is having a productive 'flying start' to the New Year. We've rejoined the gym we used to belong to before we moved to Wales - and back - anyone got any Personal sized gym and/or weight tracker templates?
