  1. Purchasing New Ring Mechanism for my Malden....yea or nay ?
I've spotted some offerings for replacement mechanism for FF on some sites...has anyone tried replacing their rings ? Does FF ever refer out to anyone that could do this...a store or company or anyone ? My rings in my new Malden are kind of off and I'm getting worried that maybe I should purchase one of these mechanisms ?? Any and all advice is appreciated !

    1. Generally speaking, it isn't possible to replace the rings in modern Filofaxes, due to the way the ring mechanisms are attached to the leather. If you have ring issues with a brand-new Filofax, my recommendation would be to contact the seller and ask for a replacement.

    2. So when you say modern Filofax organisers... at what point COULD you change the rings? Just generally curious. :)

    3. Cruz is right that when manufacture was outsourced to Asia in the early 1990's the ring mechanisms changed to a two-part riveted system to reduce costs. It is possible to replace a modern mechanism, but it is fiddly. I successfully replaced the ring mechanism on my A5 Holborn. It involved gently lifting the lips of the two rivets (so as not to scratch the metal), removing the mechanism and then the baseplate, sawing off the rivets and drilling out the two holes, fitting two short bolts, re fixing the baseplate into the Filofax with the two bolts, then adding the new mechanism and securing with two nuts. It works fine but it is so much easier to change Krause rings as used on other organisers!

    4. Generally, Zeb, you could change the rings of Filofaxes that have just a lowercase 'F' engraved on them, rather than 'fILOFAX'.

  2. Looking for more information on the Filofax Amazona. When were they released, what material is the leather? Real leather or faux? How well did the rings hold up compared to the more modern rings? Did the "croco" look start peeling over time. Any and all info would be appreciated!

    1. Zeb, they are real leather but not, obviously, real croc. They have a much higher relief print to them, much bumpier, than the earlier Ascot or the subsequent Osterley. They are a very nice binder! I've seen pictures of color wearing off but not of peeling. There was one at my local pen shop. Very luxe.

  3. I have 2 personal slimline Amazonas and the leather has held up very well indeed over time. The red is a stunning shade. Very classy and classic looking, like Chanel. xx

  4. I have recently just bought my first Filofax! A personal purple Domino. I cant wait to get organised and have ordered some sticky notes and washi tap but they wont be here until the end of the month! Does anyone have any tips on organising and making your filofax your own and successful tips and using the diary effectively? I have more detailed questions here - http://aconfusedcornishgal.wordpress.com/ - on my blog post about Filofaxing

    Thanks! Kirsty, UK

  5. I was wondering if a Philofaxy reader was the one who snagged the burgundy leather Balmoral binder off eBay UK over the weekend? I was watching it, as one does, and was pretty amazed to see it finally go for over £300. Do we know the lucky buyer?

    1. They are a bit of a rarity, so I can understand the price Paul.

    2. I realise that original Balmorals are a bit unusual, given that they were - what? double the price of a Winchester, originally? But £300 still came as a bit of a surprise. I wonder if the buyer will use it, or add it to a collection and store it away? I'm hoping use it, but I'd understand if not...

    3. Yes - they were around double the price of a Winchester, and not the most expensive ones in the range, but probably the grandest.

  6. Can anyone tell me the length of the new, improved strap on the Original? I have one of the first models and the strap is about 9.5 cms

  7. I won my very first Filofax on eBay last week. It is a personal sized Windsor. It's definitely vintage but I was wondering about what time this line was in production.
    Thanks!

    1. It would date from between 1994 and 1997.

  8. I'm afraid I'm throwing the age-old Personal vs A5 question at you guys... I'm sorry! I have a Personal Springboard that I absolutely adore, but I'm hankering after A5 paper for space... what's a girl to do? I have 3 options:

    (1) Stay in the Personal, and try and make the smaller paper work (which to be fair, it does work quite well, although not as well as A5)
    (2) Move into my A5 binder (it is a bit bulky, but I have a bag that can handle it)
    (3) Move into my A5 Flex - this seems like the best of both worlds, and I only use the diary and notes in my Filofax. But I'm worried I'll find the lack of rings a bit restrictive for things like printing out maps for places I need to be.

    I'm in a bit of a dilemma here - please help! :)

    1. 4th option
If you don't mind faffing about, you can buy 15mm ring binders in A5 (Snopake makes them) which are nice and slim compared to the Filofax A5 rings - cut out the mechanism, and using haberdashery eyelets and a hammer in place of the rivets you can then insert the mechanism into the central part of the Flex. This solved my personal vs A5 debate. I would provide photos if I had any useful ones! One day!

p.s I used the holes made by eyelets to thread elastic through for a double Domino style closure.

    2. Holly, this sounds great. Any chance of some photos and/or a blog post please?

    3. It is something I'd like to do, I'll try and get on it!

    4. Holly, I would also love to see your solution. Like you and others, I have been looking for a very slim A5 for ages, and your solution sounds spot on. Even a camera phone photo or two would be greatly appreciated! And a blog post on how to do it would be just perfect :)
