Press Release: Make Of Me What You Fill

The latest innovation from Filofax is not about organisation, it’s about individualisation

Clipbook offers the simplicity of a notebook yet without the limitations of a bound book. Its clever, patented design incorporates a six ring mechanism into the spine which can be opened with a gentle pull on both sides of the reinforced cover. The smart construction means you can add your own content as the book simply expands to accommodate more pages and shrinks back down when you want less. Even the outside can be customised by hanging small charms onto the cover rings.

Clipbook lies flat when open, providing an ideal writing surface and folds back on itself making it instantly useable on the move. It comes with a starter pack of note papers and undated diary and planner, and in A5 it’s compatible with Filofax A5 refills.

The first collection includes a soft, textured leather-look version in black, white and turquoise RRP £18 and following soon after with translucent fluoro pink and purple RRP £15.

Clipbook is initially being trialled in the UK and will be on sale on the Filofax website www.filofax.co.uk from w/c 7th April (fluoro pink and purple from w/c 14th April). It has been on sale during the past few weeks in selected WHSmith stores and will be expanded into more of their stores in the coming weeks. Visit the Filofax UK blog page to read the Clipbook designer’s inspiration next week.

Philofaxy will have a review of the Clipbook in the next couple of weeks.

  2. I think this is exactly what I need at work for notes taking during meetings.
Looking forward to Philofaxy's review... and availability in France!

  4. The pink and purple are translucent - interesting! I like the look of the teal.green one. Even if I don't like the concept, they sound like a reasonably priced possibility for A5 FF storage binders. Hope they hit US shores eventually!

  5. I purchased one of these about a month ago from one of the "trial stores". I suspect not many will have been sold if other branches also had them hidden at the end of one shelf as I found at the WH Smith Birmingham Fort branch! I understand that Filofax were waiting to launch it at the big trade stationery show in London this week.

The "soft, textured, leather look cover" is actually a piece of plastic folded over and laminated (glued) to provide double thickness on the front and back cover, whilst just single thickness on the flexible spine. It's a clever idea as folding back the covers opens the rings and the thin spine makes for flexibility.

The ring mechanism is just an economy 25mm mech from Worldwide of China. Their branding is on the back. "Economy" because it's just a standard 25mm Filofax mechanism minus the opening tabs. This means that the only way to open the rings other than by bending back the covers, is with your fingers - the way we've always been told NEVER to do!

The inserts are interesting because they have no Filofax branding or copyright date. I wonder if these were also manufactured by a third party rather than in-house at the Filofax plant in Scotland? Everything is undated which will mean that the inserts won't need to be replaced if they are still on the retailer's shelves after a few months.

The only Filofax branding is on the cover sheet and on the back cover. It is their new logo (with no animated "f"), and very much secondary to the Clipbook branding. I expect we'll see more of the new logo on other new products.

I hope the true story of this product emerges. It seems to be going head-to-head with the similar MiracleBind. I keep wondering if the Clipbook concept dates from before the Blueline/Rediform merger last year, but that Letts Filofax were too committed to stop the launch of Clipbook? Certainly the applications for patents were submitted in 2012, when Letts Filofax was still in the hands of the venture capitalists.

I found it an intriguing new product. It's hardly an alternative to a Filofax but would be great for storage. Equally, it lends itself to covering the laminated plastic with real leather (Ray Blake?) or even hacking an A5 Filofax Flex cover to give you a proper binder with pockets and much smaller than a standard A5 Filofax. Now, there's an idea for a DIY project!

  6. It's either brilliant or stupid; I can't decide.

  7. Good idea, like the concept and the colours, like the fact that it comes in both leather and non-leather. I looked at one in WH Smith. But guess what? The top ring was completely misaligned! A 3 mm gap and the right side slightly higher than the left. I won't be buying another filofax until all the ring problems are fixed!!!

    1. Kate - I'm not surprised about the dreaded ring-gap. When will Filofax learn that ultra-cheap ring mechanisms are not compatible with a quality product image? Where did you hear that a leather Clipbook is planned. I would be very surprised if it was!

  9. I'm really interested in this - I think it would be great as a revision tool for university! It'd be great to try it out!
