Free for All Friday No. 305 by Nan

Do you find that the busier you are, the more you write down, or the less you write down? When I'm intensely focused on one project, I find I don't have to write a lot of reminders...I get into a groove and everything falls into place. In fact, in these situations, I don't write in my Filofax enough and don't keep sufficient records!

Conversely, when I'm keeping lots of little things going, I find I have to write everything down to keep things from falling through the cracks. For example, it's not enough to ask someone to email information to me...I write myself a reminder on the day when I need to check for the email! Having that reminder written down helps me relax and feel that I'm not missing anything.

Can you relate to this?

  1. I find that when I get busy I want to write down more but never get round to doing it and start stressing that I've forgotten something.

  2. Nan this is exactly the way I work too. Like you, when I'm in the groove and my actions are fairly linear I hardly write anything at all, I just do it and get it done. However the vast majority of my time is spent doing small non-linear tasks that I have to write down, with next actions and follow-ups so that like you nothing slips through the cracks. And I have to keep good records of when I did these fragmented tasks so I can remember (or more like let the records remember for me) what I've done and what is yet to be done.

  3. Side note: Lately when I posts comments on Blogger blogs (Philofaxy and Plannerisms) I write my whole comment, choose Comment As Google Account, hit Publish and it wipes out my entire comment so I have to write it again. (Actually after it happened to me twice I Copy my entire comment so I can Paste it back in again.) Is this happening to anyone else or is it some wonky setting on my computer causing this?

    1. Laurie, you are not alone, and the same has happened to me a couple of times (and just happened again).

    2. this is what I do I type a letter then press publish then type and it then doesn't disappear...

    3. It might be a good idea to copy the text before you hit publish, so if that does happen, you can paste it into the comment field.
(P.S. this just happened to me, and guess who had to type everything again because I forgot to copy the text?)

    4. Happens frequently to me. Very annoying. Including this time.

    5. It happens after the fact, too. There have been a couple of times when I went back to a post I commented on, and my comment was no longer there.

    6. It's weird on my laptop because it remembers my g-mail password it automatically comes up as publish Deborah-Jane. However I am on my Pc it doesn't automatically remember my password so I choose google and then asks for my password even though I am signed in then the whole thing disappears just nuts me thinks

    7. I'm no expert, but I know on Blogspot (such as Philofaxy) you have to be signed-in BEFORE writing your comment. Staying signed-in depends on your preferred settings.

Before typing your reply, ensure the "Reply as/ Comment" box says "Laurie (Google)" - or whatever you sign-in as and NOT just "Google Account". Ensure also that the box to the right says "Sign out" - indicating that you are signed in! If there is no box, you're NOT signed-in!

I still "copy all" before posting as I've had too many comments deleted over the years!

    8. Unfortunately it doesn't give me the option of signing in before I post my comment. It just offers me Google Account, and this is even when I am already signed into my Google account! It's specifically for the Blogger pages. After I have signed into the Blogger page I stay signed in until I sign out. Just one of the many Blogger annoyances.

    9. If you have the standard Blogger toolbar enabled on your PC you should see "Sign in" on the top right. I have strict security settings (as I run my business from my PC) so I have to sign-in each time too.

    10. Yeah it doesn't give me that since the Blogger updates last year. To log into my blog I have to go in via my Gmail account.

    11. I've had this happen often. Now, when I see "Google Account" (even if I am logged in via Gmail), I open a new tab, go to my blog, go back to the original (where I'm trying to comment), refresh the page, and viola! My account is there. If I try to comment before signing in, blogger eats the comment. And copying and pasting doesn't seem to work (for me) on the iPad since Blogger and the iPad don't play well together. This is my workaround.

  4. I mostly try to write things down. I don't work with projects, so I always have several things I have to remember. I try to write things down much like you mentioned in the second paragraph. I know if I don't, I'll simply forget it. I can't remember things off the top of my head anymore.

  5. I think that I'm pretty much the same as well, Nan. Bigger projects often just get sorted, but it's all the little things that can drive me crazy so into the Filofax it goes.

And I've also been experiencing problems with my comments being wiped out. I wrote one really in-depth one here & poof, it disappeared... Haha, it just did it with this one but I'd already copied it in case!

  6. For the past few weeks I've barely looked at my main planner, its just been a brick in my bag that gave the air that I had a clue what was happening. In fact, I was doing routine shift work and had my annual birthday holiday (holidays have their own planner!) so I didn't need to write much down. But I must admit I was missing out the little tasks (especially the ones no one wants to do) so I made a concerted effort yesterday to clean the actual, literal crumbs off of and out of my main planner and write some things down, and I must admit I feel better for doing so. Also, I know from this time of year I will be gearing up on various projects so getting back into the swing of things is neccesary so I don't miss the details.

  7. On a different subject, I'm not quite sure what's up with me at the moment. On some days, I just want to sell/give away everything except one personal. And then I find myself browsing vintage binders on eBay on another day. I'm obviously feeling a bit fickle at the moment for some reason. Maybe I just need a holiday & will take my binders with me to do a proper review of them both... Anyone else feeling a bit like this??

  8. Me too and it's so frustrating. I have a system that works for me, but this time of year always makes me want to re-evaluate everything. I currently own two other binders that I don't love, and it bugs me to have them. And random: Last night I spilled gas on my work shoes (I thought I knew how to pump gas, but apparently not!); so this morning I purchased new ones specifically because they reminded me of the Domino Snake. The obsession continues!

  9. I've got itchy feet too. I've been a staunch A5 user for ages, since I came back to Filofaxes, but the other day I snagged a burgundy Cavendish personal (30mm rings) on eBay for a song and I think I'm going to have a system revamp. It's been more than 18 months since I did the last one so I'm probably overdue. I may look at changing organising systems too - things haven't been working too well recently and there has been a crisis of motivation where I haven't wanted to look at the planner for several days in a row. Needs a shakeup. I also find that if I write everything down and then stick to the system I can get lots done, but sometimes I get embedded in something and forget to look at the binder or can't find the energy to work the system and it all goes to pot... so I stop writing things down and then stuff falls through the cracks. Ditto if there's just too much going on - I get overwhelmed and things go to pieces.

  10. Well my life is Project Management. That is my chosen profession. I am a Project Manager in the construction Industry. I can't live without my Kikki K A5 notebook and Filofax A5 Malden. In meetings I write down EVERYTHING. I can't count how many times I've had to go back and refer to notes I've taken. My Malden on the other hand houses my notebook but mainly keeps my diary (thank you Ms Wenduhh for her day per page layout). I keep track of appointments (work and home) and my to do list. I will write things down when running a project but they are mostly short, concise dot points that I tick off when done. In construction Project Management, most of the steps are the same to procure and build a project. So if the project is a small fitout for example, I will run it from my head.
