Free for All Friday No. 113 by Nan

As the years go by, how I use my Filofaxes changes and (hopefully) grows. When I first had a Filofax, I rarely wrote in it. I thought the Wo2P calendar was supposed to only contain appointments, as in "2:00 Meeting."

But when you look back on your diary, information like that isn't very helpful. Even when I switched to 2DPP, it took me a while to learn to take advantage of the extra space. Now I find I'm writing things like "2:00 Meeting - Meghan's last day - Cake." Without these kinds of notes, I'd never remember what that particular meeting was all about.

Do you keep a minimalist diary -- or a wordy one?

  1. Mine tends to be fairly minimalist I guess. But I will add a more detailed sheet of paper in to cover big events, weekends like my trip to UK last weekend.

  2. Mine is similarly minimalist. f I have a lot of detail (as in, say, when I'm in London with ten meetings over two days, as I am next week), I add an extra sheet to cover that period.

  3. Well now, I use a Mini Malden almost exclusively, for my day to day uses. I record appointments, blood prssure readings, water intake, etc., along with weekly sunrise/set times, and the F1 and motoGP schedule, without any problems. If I have a list of ToDo's I put in a custom sheet, with dated things to do, which I cross off when done, or carry forward as necessary. It works for me, and is very easy to carry.

  4. I will start adding short description, I like that idea, and it's more meaningful.

  5. i add short descrption bcause i used to forget things... meetings... well I have so much meetings that I need to put more description like: "hour" - "customer " - "what is about" - "place"

  6. I would have to say that mine is "wordy". Sometimes when I look back I'm a little embarrassed at some of the dumb things I wrote. Oh, well. My philosophy is I have the space, I may as well use it, and you just never know what information might be helpful. Some of those dumb notes have actually been useful in trying to retrace my steps. So I'll keep being wordy.

  7. With the increasing popularity of Van der Spek would it be possible to change one of the Personal Inserts downloads from a "Personal "to an A6? Yes, I dare say you will say that it is easy to do but I am not all that crash hot at these things and making an A6 available would, I believe, be helpful for those of us with a Touch Me Senior.

    1. It would be easier to rescale an A4/A5 one to A6 because it is in the same proportions where as Personal size isn't the same.

I will experiment with some of our existing inserts and set them to print on A6 size paper.

  8. I recently referenced my archived calendars to timeline a three-week drive my wife and I took in 2012 across the United States. I have cities by day, hotel and restaurant names, even national park mentiions. Made for fascinating conversation, and a great memory refresher.

    1. I used a WO2P, FYI - the Monday-Sunday cream-paper version, where each day is given an equal space. And I write tiny, which made writing it down possible.

  9. I write details for meetings but I use short descriptions. On the week days on my personal size week on two pages insert are the times from 7 am-8 pm and some full length untimed lines. I prefer to write appointments and tasks on the same space so that I can plan accordingly. Also I can write tasks in time slots and it is easier to do so if I see everything at once.

I have some Franklin menu planner pages that have rows and columns. I am using this layout for some project pages. I need to see six columns at once. I am using lined paper with three columns on each page. I trimmed a Moleskine pocket notebook and slipped it in the back of my binder. I don't carry a separate notebook and this one is small and thin.
