Free For All Friday No. 314

It's Casual Friday at Philofaxy! Do you dress down on Friday?

I thought we'd have casual Friday today and leave the discussion completely open!

  1. Hmm that's interesting... I work from home... everyday is Friday... or I could say every day is like a Monday...

    1. Everyday is a casual day for me! It is now 10 years since I regularly wore a suit every day for work. I went to work for an organisation that was very dress down compared to the previous one!

    2. I started work for Barclays in 1970 when coloured shirts were frowned upon, followed by the Home Office ten years later, which was even more frumpy. I often wished for a more casual approach then, but these days it seems to have been taken to a whole new scruffy level (I am looking at a neighbour on his way to work as we speak)!

    3. I used to wear a suit in previous jobs, but the small company I work for now is quite laid back. We don't see the public & most of the people coming for training wear jeans anyway. It's been just me in this week, so I've been very scruffy which is nice for a change.

    4. I work in back office IT systems support and development for a large media company based in London. Outlandish outfits are par for the course at the office; most of the time I work from home anyway, but generally I dress in reasonably together fashion whatever day - nothing formal, just clean trousers, polo shirt and maybe a pullover, plus a pair of clean trainers, but I can wear that quite comfortably in almost all situations including at the office without drawing attention.

In several previous jobs suits were expected or encouraged, for example at EDS and Racal; I've never quite understood why managers feel that someone who never sees a customer should be expected to wear a suit and tie to work - the suit and tie don't write code, I write the code, so what difference does it make what I wear as long as I'm displaying reasonable personal hygiene and not frightening the natives? And don't give me the argument about 'professionalism' - professional is as professional does, some of the least professional people I've ever had to deal with wore business formal at work and it didn't seem to have any effect on their being lying, cheating and thoroughly incompetent eejits! Maybe it's some sort of camouflage principle?

    5. I own a small holiday cottage business on the side of Ilkley Moor in the Yorkshire Dales UK. (I can't mention the name, of course!). Friday is our main changeover day so it is always hectic. I'm in smartwear from first thing, working in my office and then waving goodbye to departing guests. I then quickly change into scruffy workwear at 10am to deal with cottage cleaning, rubbish and recycling, laundry and running repairs - plumbing, drains, electricals - you name it! Then it's a quick shower and back into smart gear at 3.55pm ready to greet arriving new guests from 4pm. The only things that stay with me all day are my iPhone and slimline Filofax - which gets carried everywhere and takes down all notes, safety reports, repairs and messages, ready for writing up later in the evening, whilst awaiting late arriving guests (and a quick look at Philofaxy!). I've used my Holborn throughout the year for this and it has held up surprisingly well.

  2. Are anyone else being amazingly flippy-floppy about their inserts? I bought and had all of mine ready in October, but now I'm starting to question my choice of diary pages. I might have to buy the exact same WO2P but with lined paper this time. Suddenly I can't imagine my life without lined diary pages. I wear myself out sometimes ;)

    1. Me..! not so much (yet) about 2015, but about the last bit of 2014. I think I will be switching to use some hand-made inserts drawn on squared paper - switching from horizontal WO2P layout to a vertical version.
Instead of changing your insert, could you make a line-guide that would slot in your binder?

    2. I put a piece of lined note paper under the page I want to write on for the time being, but it's oh so fiddly. Knowing myself I'm sure I will crumble and order more paper :)

  3. My previous work place was relatively casual. We are in the tropics so wearing a suit or coat is saved for special occasions :-) Anyway, I'm a housewife now and am at home most of the time. Yep, pretty casual all day for me.

I've been wondering if FF makes the Saffiano in Aqua anymore? I don't see that colour offered on the UK site and was wondering if it's been discontinued.

    1. It seems as though Filofax is discontinuing Filofax, sadly!

    2. So true. I wonder how many of us will want to purchase a brand new Filofax 5 years from now

  4. I have reverted to using dividers in my pocket binder. I did not try using the A-Z tabs as a filing system and contacts section because it would require too many pages and too much flipping. Also I would not want to write all that information and then awhile later decide to remove those pages for whatever reason. I am using plain white Franklin Covey dividers. The pack includes removable printed and blank labels. The tabs are quite small though. I trimmed and punched the dividers because they are wider than personal size ones.

  5. I manage an office in the construction industry - I rarely have client interaction so I am able to dress pretty casually everyday (jeans & t-shirts or sweaters in the Winter). Occasionally we will have one of our big casino clients in for a meeting or a shop/office tour and then I might pull out the dress slacks. Dresses are reserved for Summer only as a way to beat the heat, not because I have to. I sometimes think I could wear my bathrobe to work and no one would bat an eye.....hmmm, maybe I should test that theory sometime.

  6. Steve Yates: Your comment is soooo true. I need a couple of sets of personal dividers. They have been on back order since July,JULY! What a business. You would think they are trying to drive customers away. Well, congratulations Filofax, you are succeeding! Meanwhile I still need the dividers.

    1. Hi Crofter: what kind of dividers do you need? I've got quite a few spare ones, that I could send you for just the posting costs from Germany to the UK?

    2. Crofter - I also may have extra dividers, depending on what you're looking for. And if I don't have them, I will be going to New York City in 2 weeks, I could look in one of the stores for you...

  7. Anyone know where I could find a 24 hour vertical WO2P for A5? Need all days to have their own column. 1/2 hour spots would be extra nice.
