Free for All Friday No. 317 by Nan

As you read this, I'm on vacation in sunny San Diego, California. My suitcase contains 3 organizers as well as new swimsuits and some clothes.

I thought it would be appropriate to talk about travel. Do you vacation with your Filofax? Do you transfer to a special organizer for travel?

But since it's Friday, all topics are welcome!

  1. I have just bought a used Finsbury from Ebay but it seems slightly different from current UK versions. The strap is slightly thinner and has a button on the outside. The stitching is slightly different too. All the Filofax and Finsbury marks are there. I wondered if it is from a different country, or era.
    Thanks
    David

    1. Filowiki (a fantastic resource) has two listings for Finsbury binders - 1st and 2nd generations. It sounds like your version is a 1st generation (http://filowiki.robert-mayr.com/index.php?title=Finsbury_%281st_gen%29_Personal)

    2. Amanda, what a fantastic resource. Mine is indeed a 1st generation and an early one at that, 2003, so thanks again. David

  2. I use my Compact Malden zip for my travel wallet/organizer. I loved it so much during my last to vacations that it is now my current wallet. When I travel I swap out the dated pages with travel info, journal paper and tickets. Works great for me.

  3. Hello, I have followed Philofaxy for many years now and have just started my new blog - http://myfilofaxfixation.wordpress.com, I am currently in the process of setting up my new Malden. I love taking my Filofax on holiday, I create journal pages to write down what I did each day - I love reading through all my entries when I get home! I also keep important information such as flight details and packing lists in my Filofax! Last summer I took my Filofax to Spain! It was great getting back each day and writing down what where I had been and what I had done!

  4. Oh how envious I am Nan. California at this time of year! Here in the UK it's a damp, dark winters day. I've never been to CA but in my favourite 50's western that's where they always seemed headed, and then in the 60's it was the Beach Boys, The Doors, Grateful Dead etc. It's still a magical fantasy to me today. Back to Filofax, I always carry one on holiday, usually for general note taking and reminders of what I want to do while I'm away.

  5. Nothing to do with travel, and maybe only of interest to UK readers, but I was in Paperchase yesterday and they have reduced their 18-month organiser diaries to less than the normal 12 month versions (and they still cover all of 2015!) - pocket size WO2P are £2.80 and personal size WO2P are £3.50. They are pretty good value (they also come with dividers, year planner, a few sheets each of: name/address, notepaper, squared paper, timetable etc.).
Do note though that although the picture on the front of the pocket size indicates that the diary is lined, it isn't! The personal size version is though. (I have always found the pictures on the front of the Paperchase diary refills utterly worthless as they in NO WAY indicate the contents!).

  6. It sounds like you are having fun in the sun. I would just take my Franklin pocket binder on a trip because the small size is ideal for travel. I would worry though about possible loss or damage to it because it is my only pocket one. I am trialing my week on two pages insert that I drew on lined paper. I have another week insert that I can also use.

  7. I take my personal sized Filofax (currently a Malden) with me. I carry it everywhere, it would also accompany me on a trip. Welcome to San Diego. Although it is raining today, at least it is not cold and I hope you have a wonderful time here. Susanne

  8. San Diego sounds lovely. I'm traveling to LA next month to meet my first grandchild, born in May of this year. I'm on the fence about which book to take: my pocket or my new FC compact. I had to order a new purse to fit my FC (#firstworldproblems), so if that comes in before I leave I might take that one. On the other hand, the pocket is super convenient and a lot smaller. Decisions, decisions…. Enjoy your vacation:))
