Free For All Friday No. 355

Here in France schools have restarted in this last week and businesses are reopening after their August holidays, so generally things are now back to normal and Autumn is approaching so we are making the most of the good weather. It is time to start planning those odd jobs around the house that need doing before winter arrives.

How is your calendar looking in the next few weeks?

But as this is a Friday you can of course discuss anything Filofax related.

  1. Hi Steve. Just wondering if you knew what was the thickest A4 Filofax? I'm guessing it would be the one with the biggest rings.

    1. I think most of them have 25mm rings. But they don't make that many of them these days.

Van der Spek have writing cases with detachable 25 mm rings.

And they do leather ring binders with 40mm rings:

  2. "This week's prize is ideal for the executive who needs to organize his linen - it's this beautiful leather-bound Filoflax." Humphrey Lyttelton
(Fans of the long-running "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue" radio comedy will probably recognise the format here.)

  3. Yes, the hills are alive with the sound of school buses departing once again every morning, and life is returning to normal. Personally, since school is meant (according to our educational experts) to imply education for life, I'd give them all four weeks off a year and make them work from 9 until 5 with an hour for lunch........

Anyway, now that's over for another year, everything is starting up again, and it really does feel like the New Year - more so than the rather artificial (if nearly astronomically correct) Gregorian version - so there are lots of new projects to engage with, plans to make, etc etc.

The combination of these two paragraphs mean it really is this time of year, not Christmas, which is the Most Wonderful. Andy Williams got that completely wrong....

In preparation for this burst of autumnal energy I have spent the last month or so experimenting with new variations on my customary GTD setup, including forays into TimeSystem (completely incomprehensible), GTD in A5 (a brick) and Time Manager (nearly succeeded but for the lack of dated daily and weekly refills for the rest of 2015), the aim being to find a 'container' to hold all these marvelous New Year projects and aspirations and to channel them towards completion. However, I have as ever, come back to my trusted GTD system, which enables me to carry an almost unlimited number of 'open loops' with me at all times, and to be able to refer to them whenever I need/want to. It looks great as well!

Long live the autumnal New Year.......:)

    1. Yes, it IS the most wonderful time of the year. Even though my children are past the school years, I'm still on the academic calendar and actually order my tabbed month inserts in August. Oh, the new beginnings. This is when my planner is the fattest with all the new plans and projects. Happy New year !

    3. Sometimes it's nice to try something on to remember how well the old system fits.

Or we're old dogs and it's harder to learn new tricks :)

  4. Hi Carla

Happy New year to you too! The last of my kids left school over 20 years ago, but I'm still tied to an academic year psychically (OK, I've had three years of university since then, but even that was a while back).

  5. Can anyone tell me the name and size of the planner in the picture on the Highlights of August 2015 page? It is a blue planner and the picture is of the snap. Here is the link. http://philofaxy.blogspot.com/2015/09/highlights-of-august-2015.html
    Thanks :)

The photo is a crop of one of the main ones.

    2. Thanks for the reply. Those are nice planners but the picture on the Highlights of August 2015 looks like a lighter blue than the one on the website you posted. I don't own a Van der Spek planner. One day I will probably get one.

  6. I haven't got much actually written in my planner for the next few weeks, but I know I've got a lot to do and when I have to do it. I tend to plan 1 week in advance.
But when I go to do my new uni course in the 3rd week of September my planning will be getting a lot more intense, busy, and probably more detailed! In addition to my bound A6 planner, I will be implementing my A5 punched Acad Pad (from Dodo pad) as my assignment planner :)

  7. I am set with my new month format and Wo3P insert that I drew for the remaining months. There is more daily space and I am not contending with too many pages. I constructed a folder with a pocket on one side for my binder. I laminated one side of a piece of stationery, cut the pocket, and sealed the pocket with a glue stick on the inside edge. I pressed the extra lamination on the side and bottom of the pocket for added security.
