Krause Rings

Krause rings are considered to be the best available. I use them in all my 'expensive' organisers including my Gillio Mia Cara's.

When they haven't come fitted with Krause rings I've fitted them myself. It is a relatively easy job to do. With the right tools and the skills it only takes a few minutes to swap out the old rings and install the new ones.

I did this video a while ago which shows the essential things you need to know about changing rings.

Until recently obtaining Krause rings wasn't a simple task... all that has changed though.

Van der Spek have now made the Krause rings available to order on their web shop.  All Van der Spek organisers come fitted with Krause rings including their excellent 'Touch Me' range.  You will find Krause rings in the Accessories section of the Van der Spek website here

Petra has supplied this useful photo of the rear side of each mechanism so you can compare them to the ones you already have to make sure they will fit your organiser.

Points worth noting as follows:
  • The 'Mini' rings are not the same ring spacing as a Filofax Mini.
  • Junior is the same as Filofax Pocket and Gillio Pocket (same spacing as well).
  • Please note that the 20mm pocket rings are not interchangeable with the 16 mm pocket rings, the mounting points are a different distance apart. Therefore to use the 20 mm rings the internal mounting plate would need to be changed as well.
  • Senior is the same as Mulberry Agenda and used for A6 organisers including the Gillio A6.
  • Standard is the same as Filofax Personal and Gillio Medium
  • A5 is the same as Filofax/Gillio A5, but note the three mounting points with the latch in the middle. Older A5's had only 2 mounting points not three as in this design.
Gold rings are available at extra cost because they are gold plated to order or they get them done in small batches.

Thank you to Petra Van der Spek for the photographs and for making the rings available on their web site.

For details of the full range of Van der Spek products see their site.

  1. Getting new rings is fairly easy but they do not come with backing plates and to do some of the things I want to do I would have to have backing plates. Not sure why these are not supplied along with the rings - that is V.d S. style rings not the riveted kind.

    1. I'm sure if you request a backing plate then Petra will ensure that one is included in the order.

    2. John,
I asked Petra and she said:
Yes of course I can include a backing plate.

So it is possible, it's just that the majority of people don't require them.

  2. Steve - have you ever come across a Krause A5 3-ring setup? I know they have them but I can't find any on eBay or anywhere else. Thx

    1. Wouldn't those be the same rings that are used in North America for half-page?

    2. Alan, I doubt it, because A5 size and North American half-letter size have slightly different page dimensions, so it stands to reason that the ring spacing would also be slightly off.

  3. Hi Steve. Thank you for this very helpful post. Are the rings on the latest Filofax personal croco replaceable with Krause standard sized 30mm rings? Thank you. :-)

    1. No, the rings on a Filofax Croco Classic are different mounting to the ones available from Van der Spek. Krause sell that type, but I'm not aware of anyone selling them in less than a 1000 units.

    2. Gillio sells them. Gillio Firenze. They sell individual sets of Krause binder rings.

  4. Hi Steve, followed your video and all was going well until I slid the new rings on. Somehow one end fastened beautifully and the other end missed the mark and is now flopping about. Do I have to start all over and dismantle my beautiful Krause rings? Any tips? I absolutely cannot pop it on there.

    1. Slide a credit card or similar underneath the mechanism to release the locking tab.

Then remove the rings and start again. Be sure to press down at both ends before pushing up or down to reengage the rings on the mounting points.

  5. Hi Steve, I am looking at purchasing a Mini Mia Cara from Gillio but keep finding conflicting information regarding inserts. On the Mini Mia Cara page on the Gillio website it notes that Filofax mini inserts do indeed fit into the organizer. However, you have noted here they do not. I also saw another youtube video where they noted they did not fit but did not exhibit the difference in the sizes. Can you clarify if the Filofax mini inserts do fit?

    Thank you,

    Erika

    1. It's the Mini rings sold by Van der Spek and used in their own organisers that are not the same as Filofax. Slightly different standard, still made by Krause though, and they slot on in the same as their bigger brothers.

The ones used by Gillio are made by Krause and are the same spacing as Filofax Mini, but they use a metal tab system to hold them on to the organiser. Personally I think this is a little weakness in the design because I've seen these tabs fail on other organisers that use this system. They are also very small 12mm diameter!

The differences in ring spacing are explained in more detail in a later post here:

Let me know if you need more information.

  6. Hi Steve, Do you know if the Louis Vuitton agendas use the Krause rings?

    1. I suspect they do, but I've never seen an LV agenda up close to be able to see the rings in any detail.

    1. Hi Daniel
I think you would have to get replacement rings from Mulberry, no one apart from Quo Vadis as far as I'm aware use Personal spacing in A5 size.

However, I do know that people have changed an A5 Mulberry to Filofax A5 spacing, the rings fit on the same mounting points so they can be exchanged. You also gain the benefit of more choice of inserts.

Get rings from either Van der Spek or Gillio. Please be aware though that the cost of shipping can be quite hight.

ETSY is another source of Krause rings and in different sizes.

  8. Hi Steve
I recently brought a mulberry A5 planner but would like to change the Krause rings to a Filofax A5 setting. I’ve been to websites that you mentioned but not sure which one to select. Can you recommend, link the correct one? Thank you.

    1. I'm assuming 25mm rings, so go to:
      https://www.gillio.be/en/leather-items/krause-rings-without-backside-metal-2/krause-zilveren-ringen-voor-a5-organiser-2

      Or

      https://www.gillio.be/en/leather-items/krause-rings-without-backside-metal-2/krause-gouden-ringen-voor-a5-organiser-2

They should work but you might want to take out your existing ones before ordering and check the distance between the mounting points and then check with Gillio that their A5 rings have the same mounting point spacing. Shown as 148mm in the photo above

  9. Steve~ While I certainly have planners that are nicer overall, I'm finding that a A5 Clipbook is perfect for one specific application. However, I'm finding the flimsy mechanism to be problematic. The metal is so thin that it bends and twists with even the most careful use.

At first blush, it looks like I could simply swap the mechanism out for Krause rings. Do you think it would be that simple, owing to the fact that the mechanism is essentially free floating in a Clipbook? There's clearly no spine to anchor it to.

    I'd appreciate your thoughts!

    Thanks,
    Jennifer

    1. Hi Jennifer.
A conventional Krause ring mech should be able to work in the clip book. I don’t have one myself to try it out.
