Free For All Friday No. 395 by Anita

I love being part of this community and contributing to the site.
Looking back, I have been with Philofaxy since May 2012 and featured as Reader Under the Spotlight in 2011. Wow, time flies by when you're having fun!

It's interesting to read my Under the Spotlight post after all this time as some things haven't changed very much. I have recently returned to owning just the one personal, and I was selling binders back then too for the same reason. Apart from a couple of short breaks using my Raydori, my system has barely changed since getting my first Filofax in 2009, a cherry personal Classic.

What advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time to when you purchased your first binder?

And as always, it's Friday so please feel free to discuss anything ring-bound planner related.
Have a great weekend.

  1. I find that one of the most important questions, when you decide on size and layout is if you need your planner predominantely to process or to store information. Since I have decided that I am using it for quick notes (which will then soon be stored somewhere else), forward planning and daily scheduling (I remove inserts of the past, I only keep present and future time in), I have a lot of space in my personal size and can use it for 10 different categories. It does mean that I only have a few pages behind each tab and that I need to have a complementary storage system, but it's better than carrying a very thick a5 binder everywhere, which is what I did before.

  2. Someone recently commented on a post of mine in the Philofaxy facebook group from 3 years ago, so when I received the notification I read the post again- it was about personal vs A5, but now I'm happily in A6 size, so I would tell my old self to choose that size!

  4. Buy the Baroque and don't bother buying ANY other binders. NOT ONE! They will only sit in a drawer and mock your folly.

  5. Advice to myself 1986? Don't believe that there is a perfect organiser size or system. Each has pros and cons. Just make sure you use what you've got, rather than keep searching for something better! (Kate - I'm sure this message came from one of your blogs a few years ago!)

  6. I have bought different inserts and designed layouts. I prefer to create my format because I can decide every aspect and the type of paper. I bemoaned the process of trimming and punching the paper but now it is more worthwhile and efficient. I discussed features of inserts that I did not favor and then stopped purchasing them. If I do not want to continue designing my format then I will rely on technology.

  7. I currently have a spiral bound planner but want to move back to a Filofax for my work planning. The only thing stopping me is finding the right inserts for diary pages, at the moment my spiral has a weekly view with to do boxes with lines on every day, does anyone know where I could find this on an insert? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, I don't have a printer though so can't make my own!!

    3. S which brand is your spiral bound planner? I might be able to find you something similar.

Of course another option is to just pull out, trim and hole-punch your spiral bound planner pages to go into a ring binder. It's easy to do with spiral bound, although you do lose some page space at that interior edge.

    4. Hi Laurie, sorry I didn't have notifications on so didn't realise you'd replied! It's the rifle paper co planner, I did think about doing that but I'm a personal not A5 girl and there's no amount of trimming that would make it fit!!

  8. Spend the extra money for a Malden up front. It will save you money in the long run.

  11. My advice would be to use what works for me. I have to have a big calendar, a weekly and daily layout. Also, my job won't allow me to work on a project for 2 hours. Instead, I do things as I have time and I write down those reminders on scrap papers which I keep at work. One they are done, they are recycled. To a left brained person, my planning is all over the place, but for me it works!
