Free For All Friday - No. 550 by Steve

How often do you change your Filofax setup? Do you frequently do little tweaks, or one big housecleaning per year?

Of course, since it's Friday, we can talk about anything Filofax.

  1. I am looking for a really bright yellow gel pen that will show up on my planner pages colour wise. Any suggestions of brands you folks use that are really effective? Yellow seems to get lost onto white paper!!! A small question, but would make life so much easier when colour coding!!

    1. JetPens has a good list of highlighters/inks/pens in yellow. The site also gives a good synopsis on pen types as well as inks. Also try the site "The Well-Appointed Desk". Lots of posts on gel pens, inks, fountain pens, etc.

  2. I change mine too many times for my liking (and my budget!!). Have finally settled on a pocket for EDC and wallet (Malden at moment but on waiting list for new colour of VDS touch me) as well as an A4 for work (work in academia so bulky but easier all round and can print out what I need). Combination of monthly and weekly pages for both and implementing a GTD setup for both. Having big Ebay purge of all my old and some quite new) Filofaxes to prevent further temptation.

  3. Welshygirl, it is so hard to find what works for you, I really understand where you are coming from and yep, I have swooped down on too many TK MAXX//HOMESENSE bargains at Christmas too. I use an A6 as an everyday carry now and an A5 at home. If the A6 works well, then I will stop using an a5 as well as, but find another use for the A5s. I am really one life one binder type of planner lass, as switching between 2 can lead to errors I find, like double booking appointments or not transferring across.I use the weeklies and not monthlies and weeklies, same reason, one place for all appointments. Monthlies are for birthdays and anniversaries in my planner. One a5 I will probably sell, but the other 2 I could never sell, too fond of them. I used to teach, music and general subjects, until my school had a merger deal, 40 redundancies. Still job hunting!!! I use my Filofax Penny Bridge as a wallet and shopping planner, weekly groceries, budget and ingredients for my recipe of the week, a new try out meal, to get a wider repertoire of quick, healthy meals,no time to fuss in the kitchen.I used my A4 too at work, just as a daily carry to decant current stuff into. The lugging around of box files and box file sized binders never did appeal to me!! Wishing you well. Jane.

    1. Thanks for the good wishes, hope your get some luck with the job hunting. Normally use an A5 for work but due to relocation I carry a lot with me so was finding I needed to carry an A4 file plus my A5 and everything else. So found an A4 Guildford on ebay so I can have everything in one place. I'd like to have one planner for everything but as I need to carry student and staff notes it's not really possible. Work like us to use outlook diaries so I use that for the broad picture and the A4 for the detail each day then. Meeting notes and a general inbox recorded on a4 refill pad and straight into the planner so no notes everywhere and it's not too heavy. Also keep my readings and lecture notes for the day in there too which wasn't possible with the A5.

Love my malden as my wallet but always dither between pocket and personal but really think the pocket is all I need.

I live by a homesense too but haven't seen any filo in there for a couple of years which I'm disappointed by.

  4. Minority chiming in as the set-up for my personal size planner has remained pretty much unchanged since 1992. What can I say besides it works for me? Filofax WO2P in cream because it's fountain pen friendly. The sections have slimmed down a bit as my kids grew up and life changed. It's been an interesting experience.

For the last 3 years I have been using a separate A5 for work, and the planner is not set up perfectly for me. For many reasons my job cannot be confined to my personal planner. The work A5 has been a source of planner pride for me as it fleshed out. For work I use the Filofax WO1P w/ notes and the vertical year planner. (That is an underappreciated insert imo.) It's very much a File of Facts and has converted 5 of my co-workers to using a binder/functional planner.

  5. My A5 setup essentially remains the same, with little tweaks here and there, but I usually freshen up the decor once a month. I thrive on ritual and routine so having the same setup, in the same, predictable order feels good, but I also like a wee wink and a nod to the new month or season, as a way to keep me excited and motivated to use my planner and to get the most function out of my setup as possible.

  6. Set up remains the same. I clean it out every so often, trying to lighten it up. Only thing that changes regularly is the scrapbook paper in the cover pocket. Makes me think I have a new binder when I do that. (And it's cheaper than buying a new binder.)

  7. I think I've finally found a size/set up that will last. Pocket size with wo2p, plus note pages.

Question- I love the pocket size, but the filofax I have does not have the large pocket in the back. (I have a Pattern in marble.) I've seen some Maldens that have the large pocket, but the new ones don't seem to. How do you know which models have the pocket?
