Free For All Friday - No. 875

I've noticed a possible new trend recently on You Tube.

Some of the video titles are in French and the voice over has been overdubbed in to French.

Here are some examples:

The people posting the videos as far as I know aren't French!! I've tried logging out of YouTube to see if it was some odd setting and using a private window, but that didn't alter things.

Yes I know I'm in France. However, it doesn't change all videos and I've not noticed this on other videos I watch, only the planner ones. Quite odd!! It must be some new setting available to people posting the videos?

Have you noticed this?

Of course it is Friday so please feel free to discuss anything Filofax related.

  1. I think I've discovered the answer. When I use my app, it doesn't give me the option of which sound track. With a browser on the YouTube site it does, but why would it change it when I have the language set to English I don't know!

  2. I have wondered about this, too, since I had seen French-titled videos where there was no lip sync, and automatic French narration.

So I just did a thing... I removed all the extended metadata from the link, leaving just the "watch" video ID (delete everything from the & onwards). That plays normally, in English. There was no setting in the mobile browser view to control auto-narration/translation.

I always try to remove the extended metadata from YouTube and Google URLs before I post links, as I suspect it is traceable personally.

    1. Thanks for the info. It would be a bit labour intensive to remove all of that for every video given the large number of them each week.

    2. Fairly easy to parse (that ampersand is easy to find and crop beyond), but would need adding to your workflow.

  3. It’s a new feature on YouTube being rolled out. Creators can switch it off. It’s called auto-dubbing. It’s designed to give more scope so that the AI will voiceover in the language of viewers and let them se and hear content they would otherwise miss out on.
