Another Pocket plopped onto my doormat yesterday; a Hampshire. Similar to the Dorset, with 'traditional cut edge styling' (so a 'county theme'...?). Sadly, it seems to have suffered some reaction between a clear vinyl sleeve in the back, and the painted leather; the sleeve was stuck to the back, and, when slowly and carefully peeled off, left a very sticky residue film. That residue wouldn't shift with water, leather cleaner or lighter fluid, and was very resistant to scraping off with a thumbnail. It seems that the leather paint is coming off with the sticky, but the remnant is still very sticky.
ReplyDeleteVinyl (especially clear, flexible vinyl), does suffer from leaking plasticiser, or degrading polymerisation, and I think that's what is going on here. I used to make sure I had a sheet of plain paper between any laser printed or photocopied sheets stored in vinyl ring binders. But a petroleum solvent would usually remove that. Very weird.
Cut-edge (with shiny edge paint) binder, with very stiff covers and no flatability. Four credit card slots and slip pocket on left, zip pocket on right. I suspect the inner & outer spine will crack with use. Not a good purchase. It was relatively cheap, and I don't think the seller was acting in bad faith, so I'll take it on the chin.
I think the lesson to learn is not to leave flexible vinyl sleeves in direct contact with painted leather binders.
Yikes! What an unfortunate situation. A good reminder for us all. Thanks for sharing.
