Free For All Friday No. 463 by Anita

From time to time, I hear people asking questions about how to remove unpleasant smells from their binder, like cigarette smoke or mustiness from storage. It occurred to me that from time to time, it's nice to have a fragrant Filofax in a pleasant way instead!

I go through stages of wearing perfume and sometimes fancy a bit of a change. For some reason, it takes me a while to figure out if a new one is right for me, so I will spray some on one of those cardboard tester strips they provide and take it home with me.

I found that they're quite a handy size to hole punch and it's quite nice as I smell the perfume each time I open my binder. I have also dabbed some geranium or lavender essential oil on the strips and it makes for a nicely fragrant binder, as long as you don't put too much on. I drink lots of herbal tea and sometimes they smell much nicer than they taste, so I had a liquorice tea bag tucked in one of the front pockets for a while.

Just wondering if anyone else does this as well?

And as always as it's a Friday, please feel free to discuss anything Filofax or ring bound planner related. Have a great weekend.

Planner Con Europe - Sponsors Feature - Van der Spek

With PlannerCon Europe only four weeks away I thought I would expand on some of the companies that will be there or who are sponsoring the event that will be of interest to organiser users.

Tickets are still available see the PlannerCon Europe website for details.
Today's post we look at Van der Spek.

Company History
Van der Spek have been making leather goods for more than 90 years with the 3rd and 4th generations of the family continuing the traditions of high quality and craftsmanship produced items.

In addition to the family, the small team is made up of craftsmen and women with many years of experience. Their market was predominately in the Netherlands, but it is now a truly world wide company with customers in every continent of the world.

Company Details.

Company: Van der Spek Lederwaren

Location:  Van der Spek LederwarenLaning 2
3297 TB Puttershoek
Tel: +31 78 676 4777

Email: website@vdslederwaren.nl
Website: https://www.vdsshop.com
Facebook page: Van der Spek Leather Goods
Facebook groupVan der Spek Organiser Fans

Product details.

Leather is sourced from within Europe and all Custom organisers, Nomad TN covers and Codex Notebook covers are made in house at Puttershoek by the Van der Spek team.

Custom models typically take 4-5 weeks to be made and delivered as they are made to order, therefore each one is unique to the customers requirements within certain design parameters.

Custom models can have various options added to the basic designs such as back pockets, additional pen loops, etc.

With custom models you select the interior and exterior leather/colour as well as the colour of the interior and exterior stitching. There is a very wide range of leathers in different finishes and colours available. The range of leather is constantly being expanded to meet the needs and desires of the customers.

You can decide if you want stiffener between the exterior and interior leather included. You can also opt to not include the foam between the layers, just request this in the special requirement message on your order.

Further customisations are available, please contact Petra Van der Spek at the email address shown above.

The Touch Me range are mass produced for Van der Spek by a company overseas, but to a high standard. These are available off the shelf.

Rings:
Van der Spek use Krause rings in all of their organisers, these are also available for separate purchase should you want to upgrade other brands of organiser, but check the photo on the website to ensure they are compatible with the ones you are replacing.

·      What is the maximum paper thickness can you use in the rings?:
  • Mini 15mm rings – max 11mm
  • Junior 16mm rings – max 12mm
  • Junior 20mm rings – max 14mm
  • Senior 20mm rings – max 14mm
  • Senior 25mm rings – max 19mm
  • Standard 25mm rings – max 19mm
  • Standard 30mm rings – max 24mm
  • Manager A5 25mm rings – max 19mm
  • Manager A5 35mm rings – max 29mm

Leathers:

Italian leather
18… leathers. These leathers are finished and are easy to keep clean. These leathers are hand dyed, which gives the leather different colour shades. The leather is made from the neck and front legs of the cow (also named as avancorpi) which gives the hide a beautiful natural grain.

NAPPA leathers:
The 62… leathers + Barbie + velato are naked leathers. There is no finish on the leather. They have a two tone effect on the hide. It is more natural looking, but please note that they are more sensitive to water and dirt.

The other nappa leathers with the names (except Barbie and velato) do have the finish and the skins are always in one plain colour. The finish means it is easier to clean and also more durable.

Janet leather:
These leathers cost 10% more than all the other colours.

The original Janet leather is the brown one #104. This leather is sensitive for water and dirt since it also does not have any finish, just an open structure.

So you have to love leather that will change and get a patina look as well.

And we also have 4 other colours in look-a-like Janet leather. These leather can handle water and are more durable.

Print leathers like croco, ostrich and LV. These are cow leathers with a print. They’re all very durable and easy to clean.

Undyed leather:
Very sensitive for all you can think of ;), water, dirt, even sunlight! This leather will change really fast! So you have to love it!

Inside leathers like: 05-08-09 ….. These leather are thinner and have wrinkles in the leather, that is the reason we only use them for the inside. It is a finished leather, so it is also easy to keep clean.

All the leathers we use are full grain leather, top quality! They do not treat their leathers.

Leather skins do come from cattle that live in the open air and under various conditions. So the leather is subject to all kinds of natural defects, neck pleats, traces of veins etc. these cannot be avoided in the tanning process. Of course they try to avoid these natural marks in the selection process so they get the best result for your finished product. But it is still a natural product which gives it charm.

Organiser Sizes:

A5 Manager - Available in Custom and 'Touch Me' designs with either 35 mm or 25 mm rings, the same ring spacing as Filofax A5

Standard - The same size and ring spacing as Filofax Personal, they come with either 30 mm or 25 mm or 13 mm rings. Also available in the Touch Me range with 30 mm rings 25 mm size optional.

Senior - These come in two sizes. Widened for A6 and Un-widened. Ring spacing common to Mulberry Agenda and it is different spacing to Standard, therefore Standard (Personal) pages will not fit a Senior.

Senior Un-widened are for use with Sucess type inserts which are narrower than A6 inserts. This size in custom is available in 13 mm or 20 mm or 25 mm rings. Old style Touch Me models were also Un-widened but were only available in Black and Dark Brown with 20mm rings. Un-widened will accept A6 inserts, but you will need to use top tabs on the dividers.

Senior Widened models in Custom will work with A6 inserts with side tabs they are available with 13 mm or 20 mm or 25 mm rings. All new Touch Me models are widened by default in all colours, and are also available in 20 or 25 mm size and will take A6 inserts.

Here are the two Senior sizes compared when open. The widened model measures approximately 315 mm edge to edge. The un-widened model below it approximately 280 mm edge to edge.

Junior - Page size is the same as Filofax Pocket size and the same ring spacing as Filofax Pocket. In Custom these come in two ring sizes 20mm and 16mm. Touch Me model comes with 20 mm size rings.

Mini - Page size similar to Filofax Mini but the ring spacing is different to Filofax Mini, therefore Filofax Mini pages will not fit the Mini Van der Spek. Only available in Custom with 15 mm rings.

The ring spacing is 19<->25.4<->25.4<->19mm spacing.

VdS Mini will fit on to A5, and Personal (Standard) So in fact it is quite a useful size as a 'satellite' planner that you can tuck in your pocket and may be leave your Standard in your bag.

Nomad Travellers Notebook Cover.
The Nomad TN cover came about as a result of a joint team effort between the people at Van der Spek and Janet Carr and Steve Morton during their get together at Puttershoek in October 2014. The design was further refined and revealed to the public in April 2015.

The Nomad comes in the standard TN cover size for booklets that are 210 mm by 110 mm in size. The Nomad Junior is now available for booklets that are 140 mm by 90 mm in size.

The Nomad is available as a basic cover with various options that can be added including internal pockets and pen loops all available for on-line ordering. But like all things Van der Spek they can be customised to the buyers requirements, naturally this will cost a little more but the results are outstanding. Find out more about the Nomad TN cover on the Van der Spek website.

The Codex Notebook Cover
This product was originally designed for bound notebooks/planners such as the Hobonichi planner. It is available in both A5 and A6 sizes. The Codex Standard is for the Hobonichi Weekes planner.

This product can also be fully customised.

Some examples have also been made as Nomads in A5 and A6 sizes. Find out more about the Codex Cover on the Van der Spek website.

Other products:

As well as organisers and other planner covers, Van der Spek also make leather pen cases and leather writing cases,  these can also be customised in a similar way to the leather organisers. See the website for full details.

News: Keep up to date with news and new releases on the Van der Spek Blog.

We look forward to seeing Petra and the team at Planner Con Europe at the end of October.

The London Stationery Crawl

What is a Stationery Crawl? Sounds like a bit of a contradiction, yes it would be if I had mis-spelled it Stationary Crawl!  Think of a pub crawl, but you visit different shops for stationery and other related items!.

Confused? As always a picture saves a thousand words.

I created this map a couple of years ago from a listing during National Stationery Week and then 'enhanced' it over time.

We will not be attempting to visit all of these establishments on Saturday, but if you are in London for a few days and you want to know where the best stationery shops are then I hope this map helps you.

If there are any updates/missing shops, please let me know in the comments below.

Project Planner Template for A4/A5 and A6 users

I would like to thank Rose for sending in this Project Planner Template for A6 organiser users. I have also adapted it to work with A4/A5 sizes too.

The pages look like this, starting with the first page:

Pages 2 and 3 are a straight forward To-Do list for the project, this allows you to break down the project in to manageable tasks.

And the last page is a simple grid which you can use in one of several ways. Either a Gantt chart, or you could use it for totalling costs in different categories.

You can download the files from here:
To print the files, the A6 file is set to print directly on to A6 size paper, in most cases you will have to put the paper in the feed tray and flip the pages from one side to the other manually.

The A5 file is sized to A4, so booklet print the file on to A4 paper and then cut the sheet in half and you will have the file in A5 size. Or alternatively print the file on to A5 paper and scale to fit (71%) and like the A6 you will have to print the 'Odd' pages flip the sheets and then print 'Even' pages.

Thank you again to Rose for supplying the original files.

Filofax Bromley Travel Wallet - Adaption

I enjoy using my Filofax Bromley Travel Wallet when I need to travel, it holds all my tickets and cards, change, passport etc.

It is of course far too big to use on a normal day to day basis unless you wear a jacket with a deep pocket. But for travelling it just perfect.

The wallet can take a thin travellers notebook if you size it correctly with the wallet being about A5 in height.

On the inside you might remember from my review it has the facility to hold personal size pages with too press-studs the correct spacing apart for the inner two holes on a personal page. However, I don't use personal size very often these days. So I wondered could it take a folded A5 page instead.

It can but you have to punch an extra pair of holes in the pages and then fold the page length wise as shown. It will be fine for occasional notes and written details about my flights/trains etc.

I'm always looking for different ways to use existing items!! This is just yet another example!

Free For All Friday No. 462 by Steve

A big thank you to everyone who commented on my post on Wednesday regarding Web Finds including the people that have commented on Facebook as well.

The comments have been an enormous help and they have triggered a few ideas that I will use and adapt the posts to your liking over the next few editions. I will try out a few of these ideas to see if you like them, we can always change back!

Reader recommendations are great though, so thank you for them all. I will be adding a lot of your preferred You Tube channels to my system here and I've had a few new blogs suggested too.

Thank you also for your helpful and supportive words too, they are all gratefully received.

This time next week I will be doing my final packing for my trip back to London for the Philofaxy Meet Up on 30th September. Thankfully Ryanair haven't cancelled my flights! So I'm looking forward to that.

Of course, since it's Friday, all organiser related discussion is welcome!

Planner Con Europe - Sponsors Feature - Gillio Firenze

With PlannerCon Europe only five weeks away I thought I would expand on some of the companies that will be there or who are sponsoring the event that will be of interest to organiser users.

Tickets are still available see the PlannerCon Europe website for details.

Today's post we look at Gillio Firenze who are a 'Diamond Sponsor' for Planner Con Europe 2017.

As a way of introduction, Gillio was 'introduced' to us by Mella who discovered their products in a store in Antwerp when she was looking for a Filofax Deco. She blames me for this, but she then became a big fan of Gillio organisers and now works for them!!

Company History
Gillio Firenze is a small family business that sells high-end, top quality, handmade leather goods made out of the finest Italian leathers. The company started with a small stationery shop in Brussels in 1952 and they have since expanded their brand and collections significantly. Their products are sold worldwide (to almost 50 countries) through their on-line store.

Company Details.

Company: Gillio Firenze

Location:

Gillio - IIC bvba

Facebook groupGillio Firenze

Product details.

The Gillio Firenze products stand out in quality, craftsmanship and overall look and feel. Once you have owned a Gillio product and have experienced their leather quality, it’s hard to ever go back to cheaper commercial leathers. Their well-known epoca leathers are still coloured according to the ancient Italian traditions. Not a quick colour dye, but traditional vegetable tanning. This transformation from raw hides into beautifully dyed leather is a slow and astonishing process in wooden drums, based on the use of natural tannins, on modern technologies and machineries but mainly, on the slow passage of time.

This process is the most environmental-friendly, and it allows them to keep the uniqueness and versatility in the product. The natural variations (creases, imperfections, scars, variations in the colour or the grain) in the leathers are inherent to the Gillio products: you will never find two identical products in the Gillio collection: instead of offering perfectly (artificially) smoothened, thirteen-in-a-dozen products, Gillio firmly believes in creating unique pieces of craftsmanship that will grow even more beautiful with age - true heirlooms!

Leathers.
High quality vegetable tanning is disappearing in Europe, with an exception of Italy, where all of their leathers are produced. Gillio leathers are labeled with the 'Certificato de Garanzia - pelle conciata al vegetale in Toscana' label: guaranteed vegetable tanned Tuscan leathers. Gillio earned this label after meeting the most stringent requirements for authenticity of leather processing, imposed by the strict specifications of the Consortium, an independent organization that carries out regular (unannounced) spot checks on quality and production.

For more details about the leathers that Gillio uses in their products please visit this page on their own Website.

Rings.
The rings on Gillio Planners are removable just follow the instructions in my video.

Warranty
Gillio offer a life time warranty on all of their products even if you didn't buy it direct from them. This gives you peace of mind when buying any Gillio product. Full details can be found on the Gillio website here.

What is the difference between the Gillio and the Gigliodoro products?

Gigliodoro is the former name of Gillio Firenze. They have re-branded in 2008, so any products labeled 'Gigliodoro' are mostly from before then.

Web Finds Issues

I've lost track of when I started doing web finds, it must be well over five years now.

The posts these days are Tuesdays and Saturdays. They have changed in format over the years compared to what we have now.

Sadly you can't have failed to notice that the size and content of the posts is not like it used to be during the peak years, when there was so many posts I had to split them between Tuesday and Saturday.

There are on-going issues with producing both posts that I would like to make you aware of.

The video post on Tuesday has a couple of issues, starting with the reduced number of videos that are appearing in my searches each week. I search on the various brand names as the most obvious way of finding suitable videos.

I have a new minor issue about obtaining the title and the link to the videos on You Tube since they redesigned their site. Using my established method I now end up with four spaces before and after the title of the video that need to be edited out each time! I have a temporary work around for this though.

There is also an increasing number of channels being pirated on You Tube. The pirates steal the content and upload it and add adverts to them to make money off other peoples content. Sometimes it is easy to spot these pirate channels and were possible I find the real owners of the content and advise them to report it to You Tube.

Occasionally these videos have been included in Web Finds and if someone contacts me to point out that they know a video is pirated then I do remove it from listing.

It would be helpful if You Tube creators included their channel name in the title of the video, then the pirated ones would stand out better.

To avoid this in future it would be very helpful to me if I had a list of known video channels that regularly make content available that you find interesting to watch that will appeal to other Philofaxy readers.

Question 1, which channels are you subscribed to for good content featuring organisers?

The Saturday post is just blog posts from around the internet that feature organisers or information that I believe will be of interest to organiser users in general.

Yes I've had to bend the rules a bit in the last few months to make the lists a reasonable length otherwise there will hardly be much in them each week.

Finding new blogs isn't easy these days, especially as Google don't have a 'Blog' category any more.

When I find a new blog I add it in to my monitoring system which flags up when there are new posts. Even if the blog features only the occasional organiser or planning blog post I continue to monitor it.

Quite a few people have dropped out of the blogging scene in the last couple of years, it is very time consuming to keep a good blog ticking over with new and fresh content each day/week/month. I think I'm fairly well qualified to be a judge of that!!

The dormant blogs either go quiet or disappear completely. I remove the ones from the system that get shut down.

Question 2, are there any blogs out there that you know about, that we miss out of Philofaxy Web Finds that you believe should be included?

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Thank you.

Note: The same issues also apply to the videos shared on Travellers Notebook Times as well!

A6 Year Planner - Vertical Format

Another insert that we have never been asked for, a year planner but in vertical format rather than horizontal format and by popular request for A6 size. The A5 version is here, the Personal version is here and the Pocket version is here.

It looks like this:

Please note I used colour shading on this one just to enhance it a little bit. The downloads come with a 'normal' 12.5% grey shading we use on nearly all our inserts, but it is easy enough to change.

You can print out this out on a single sheet of A4, do not scale it, print it 100%, trim the printed page to 148mm high by 287mm wide, punch and then 'Z-fold' to fit a A6 size organiser.

The folds are at 105mm and approximately 196mm from the left hand edge.

You can download and print finished versions for this year from our diary inserts page.

If you want to customise this insert to your own requirements you need to download the source files here Word file and the Excel file, you will need both.

When you've made all the changes you like to the template, you can perform a mail merge to create your own insert for any period you like. Check out our Free Diary Inserts link if you want more information on how to do this, including videos.

Once again a big thank you to Ray at 'My Life All In One Place' for his hard work and co-operation with helping to create and support us with all these inserts.

Paper sizing and scaling - Update

It is the season of printing inserts ready for the new year. A season of confusion may be, trying to remember all those things about sizes and printing and print settings.

You are nodding your head I know! It is ok even I have to think hard about this stuff annually.

It wouldn't be so bad if you used this information every week, it might become second nature, but for most of us it is information we only use once or twice a year.

So let us start with a picture.

The three different sizes shown A5, B5 and A4 are common sizes. I've added the dimensions to show their actual sizes.

A4 is twice the area of A5, A5 is twice the area of A6 etc. Similarly B4 is twice the area of B5, B5 is twice the area of B6 etc.

These three sizes are all ISO216 paper sizes, ISO216:2007 specifies three different series of paper sizes, A, B and C. One thing in common is that the ratio of height against width is the square root of two. So if you multiple the width by 1.4142 (the square root of 2) you will magically get the height to within 1 mm. Alternatively multiple the height by 0.7071 and you will get the width of the page.

Because they follow this pattern we can easily scale from one size to another when printing. So for instance if you have a Word file that is set to A4 size to print it on A5 paper you scale the page by 0.7071, or more conveniently 70.7% or 71% if you can't input a decimal number.

Note that the reduction between each size is not 50% even though the smaller size has half the area. The scale factor for reduction is calculated by dividing the longer edge of the smaller size by the longer edge of the larger size (or the shorter edge of the smaller size by the shorter edge of the larger size).

Using that rule we can devise how to go from A4 to B5, so we take 250mm and divide it by 297mm to get 0.841 or just 84% should be close enough.

What is the significance of B5 size you might ask.... B5 is Deskfax size, whilst Filofax have discontinued this size years ago, it still remains a popular size, although printed inserts for this size are difficult to come across. With the knowledge of the scaling factor of 84% you can take any of the Philofaxy diary inserts intended for A5 size and print them at 84% and you will have Deskfax pages.

All the Philofaxy diary inserts for A5 are in fact sized to A4 this is so if you use the 'Booklet' print facility available on some printers they will be printed the correct size on A4 paper (two pages per side) If you are printing the files directly on to A5 paper you have to scale the print to 71%.

To help you remember this information I have created an 'aide memoire' which you can either put on your notice board or print out and put in your organiser.

Free for All Friday No. 461 by Nan

Since it's September, I thought we'd talk about something academic. Of course, lots of teenage and adult students use some kind of planner to help manage their busy schedules and study time. But ring-bound organizer aficionados like us often love our organizers so much that we use them for much more than scheduling! After all, they come in lots of different sizes, can hold all sorts of paper, and are completely customizable. You can never run out of paper or end up wasting half of a bound notebook when the term ends.

So how do you use your organizer for school? Do you take your lecture notes in it? Do you capture ideas while you're reading? Do you use it for term paper or thesis research?

Of course, since it's Friday, all organizer-related discussion is welcome!

Tell us about...... 16

Organisers come in a variety of sizes. Some sizes are more commonly used than others. Some sizes have more support than others, more inserts available etc etc.

What size do you use mostly?

Are there enough inserts available for that size?

Tell us in the comments below.

Pocket Year Planner - Vertical Format

Another insert that we have never been asked for, a year planner but in vertical format rather than horizontal format and by popular request for Pocket size. The A5 version is here and the Personal version is here. And before someone asks an A6 version is in the works and will be published soon.

It looks like this:

Please note I used colour shading on this one just to enhance it a little bit. The downloads come with a 'normal' 12.5% grey shading we use on nearly all our inserts, but it is easy enough to change.

You can print out this out on a single sheet of A4, do not scale it, print it 100%, trim the printed page to 121mm high by 220mm wide, punch and then 'Z-fold' to fit a Pocket size organiser.

'And here's one I prepared earlier'. The folds are at 81mm and approximately 150mm from the left hand edge.

You can download and print finished versions for this year from our diary inserts page
