Guest post series - 'Filohax' No.7 - Paul

Thanks again to Paul for this seventh instalment of his wonderful guest post series. You can find all of the 'Filofhax' posts here

To pen loop or not to pen loop

If, like me, you fell in love back in the 80's and are still in the same relationship, chances are you intimately know your loved one's short comings, and have had to learn to live with them. Yes, I'm talking about my Winchester's poor pen holding capacity! However, recently I decided to do something about it (after seeing an elastic pen loop for sale for £1!).

I've often thought that planner designers have missed a trick in not utilising the void created between the rings of binders, so decided to do a little experiment, and instead of positioning the pen loops outside of the inserts have put it to hold the pen on the inside of the rings instead.

What's wrong with outward facing pen loops? Well, the downsides of positioning loop/s on the outside of our binders, to me, are obvious - sooner or later the pen is going to interfere with tabbed dividers. There is also the aesthetic effect that adding loops has in 'cluttering' the look of binders - Winchesters with their one loop attached to the back cover consequently have very clean lines, whereas the Cavendish looks cluttered by comparison.

But the main problem with pen loops for me is the pen snagging.

For work I use a Cavendish - with it's ample double external pen loops' capacity - and carry it in my shoulder bag. However, the pens are constantly snagging the insides of the bag as I pull the Cavendish out (it's a testament to the rugged construction that the snagged pens haven't pulled the stitching apart!). So I decided to experiment by using the new elasticated loop on my Winchester

and have made a breakthrough - initiated, counter-intuitively by a major design flaw in the new elasticated pen loop... The problem being that if you dare try to push a stubby tipped pen into the elasticated loop...it catches and stops you from being able to use the loop.

That is until I remembered one of Neil's Flatability videos demonstrating how to wedge only the pen's 'cap' into overly tight pen loops, and simply pulling the pen out of the trapped pen cap to use and then clicking it back into the cap.

It's working like a dream, so I now have adopted it for my work Cavendish.

Come on Filofax, isn't it time for a radical reimagining of how we accommodate our writing implements into our binders?!

Free for All Friday No. 772 by Nan

Do you have a summer reading list? Or (like me) a list of books that you'd love to read, but never seem to have the time?

I've been thinking of some ways I can use my Filofax to help me read books rather than just list them...
- Keep a reading log behind its own tab
- Track pages read on each daily page
- Set reading goals for each week or month
- Take notes on what I read

Any other ideas? Of course, as always on Friday, feel free to share anything related to your ring-bound organizer!

Time to rationalise your organiser

On Monday I wrote about printing my diary inserts for next year. Once those are printed and punched it will time to add those extra pages to my organiser.

To fit them in I think it will be time to run through my other inserts and check though them to see what updating, what I can archive or recycle.

I am still a lover or should that be a hoarder of printed maps, but I really shouldn't be carrying them all of the time! I will be removing quite a few of those which will make quite a bit of room on the rings, especially as some of them are printed on quite heavy weight paper (Transport For London).

My organiser holds a lot of miscellaneous information, it will therefore be a good opportunity to review a lot of those pages too.

What sort of annual contents review do you do? Or do you do it more often?

La Rentrée (Back To School)

Here in France all the schools go back on the same day, no matter where they are in the country. 'La Rentrée' (Back to School) is also seen as a big return to work as well as a lot of businesses close their offices for part of, or all of August.

The roads here in August are either deathly quiet or totally crazy! Best avoided if possible.

I have already ordered and received my Quo Vadis Daily 21 bound planner that I use as a daily journal, I've been using the same model for the last 12 years! The paper is excellent and takes fountain pen ink with no issues. Therefore why change.

September is also the time of year when I start to think about printing my inserts for the next year.

I like to get my inserts printed well before the end of the year because events and appointments for the following year start to appear on the calendar, so I like to get them in to my organiser before I get double booked with something else.

I'm 99.99% certain to be staying in A5 page size. I want to test out one of our new inserts compared to my usual Enhanced Time Management insert to confirm which one I will be using next year.

Either this one

Or....my old favourite.

Take a look at the Philofaxy Diary Inserts Page if you haven't made up your mind yet. There are lots of different inserts for 2024 there that you can just download and print, or modify and print yourself.

You will find inserts for 2025 available here too.... and soon 2026!

Free For All Friday No 771 by Laurie

I've been thinking about my requirements for my planner, not only what I need it to do for me but also what I want it to be.

My requirements change from time to time: whether I need my planner to be super-portable, or if it stays home most of the time. Which planning format/ layout I need. Whether I need daily pages or just weekly.

Beyond functionality, I need my planner to be special to me in some way.

Filofax organisers are easy to make special. I choose which colour and material I want for the binder, something that I feel represents my personality. I put in anything I want: photos, fragrance cards, ticket stubs, customised pages. The result is a planner that uniquely represents me. And when something changes, I can change my Filofax.

One of the ways I like to make my Filofax special to me is to tape post cards to my tabbed dividers. This one is on my Work tabbed divider:

How do you make your Filofax special to you?

As always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/or discuss anything Filofax related!

Twitter

Just a short announcement today. Philofaxy is no longer on Twitter.

For some months now we have not been able to automatically post our blog posts to Twitter without paying a Kings ransom to do so.

This week Twitter took away Tweetdeck from people that also were not paying their subscription to the company.

At €100 per year just for Tweetdeck per account it was time to make a decision.

It is unfortunate because a few years ago there was quite a planner community on Twitter, again without paying for the subscription our posts wouldn't be seen by many people.

It seems that social media isn't quite what it used to be.

Thank you for your continued support.

Guest Post – My cheapest organiser purchase - by Gmax

Thank you to Max for this guest post.

I’d promised to write about this, which I’d mentioned in response to a Tell Us About post last year. The topic was a cheap organiser purchase that didn’t disappoint…

For me has to be this 2019 eBay lot of six simple binders, which cost £8 including postage.

Three were Norman & Hill models from the late 70s, two were Filofax ones from the early 80s, and the last was unbranded, probably from the same era.

#1 Norman & Hill E202 7/8”

Model E202 was a stiff, canvas covered binder with no pockets. This one is a light grey colour. It’s obviously seen some use. I keep sheets to record credit card purchases (Form 609) in it.

#2 & 3 Norman & Hill 715 7/8”

715 was a vinyl binder with two pockets. It’s not listed in the January 1979 catalogue, but I believe it came out later that year. Both of these examples are brown.

#4 Filofax 2V 7/8” Textured

I reckon this brown 2V binder dates from 1980/81 – it follows the lines of the previous Norman & Hill 715 model designation, with the same textured vinyl.

#5 Filofax 2V 7/8” Smooth

Quite soon after Filofax’s change of ownership in 1980 the 2V model must have changed to use a smooth finish of vinyl. This style then persisted until the ribbed VR models came out in the middle of the decade.

#6 Unbranded

The last of the set is black and has slightly smaller rings. The way these are attached to the cover looks different, as do the pockets. I don’t think this can have been made by Filofax.

Filofax don’t really offer binders like these today, which is a shame. They are handy for storing new and used leaves, both of which I have quite a lot of!
