A Date For Your Diary - Sunday 7 July 2019

We are going to run another conference round-table voice/video chat using Skype.

When? - Sunday 7 July at the following times:
  • Los Angeles 8:00 am,
  • Denver 9:00 am
  • Dallas 10:00 am,
  • New York 11:00am,
  • London 4:00 pm
  • Paris 5:00 pm etc.
Do not worry if you aren't available at the start of one of the session as it lasts 1-2 hours, so pop up when you are available and say hello.

Where? - an on-line chat using Skype. with voice and video (if you wish). Please make sure you have the latest version of Skype.

What do I need? - just a micro-phone and some head phones(in ear phones work fine) and a free Skype account. Using headphones or earphone reduces 'echo' on the call. Video is optional, but a few of us will be on video as well.

Who - All of you... connect up with Philofaxy and we will attempt to get as many of us linked in to the audio conference as possible. Come and listen if you don't want to chat.  What do we talk about? Filofax stuff... but anything else as well. It's like long lost friends meeting up for coffee and a catch up.. but don't worry if you have never joined in before... you are an old friend too!

If you have any questions you want to ask then please let us know in the group or before we start.

How -
  1. Connect to Philofaxy by firstly searching for Philofaxy in Skype, I will then add you as a contact.
  2. Then  'Send Contact Request',  I will then add you in to the chat room.
  3. Then if you request it, I can add you to the audio conference as well. But if you just want to chat via keyboard that's fine. That way it's slightly less hectic for me!
Come and join in the fun, even if you only pop in to say hello... but don't be afraid to join in the discussion.

If you need any assistance setting up Skype, please pop a comment in this post and I will try and help you get one line. Skype is free for computer to computer calls....

Here is my post on how to improve your Skype audio with headphones or a headset.

Hope to be chatting with you on Sunday 7 July 2019.

Free For All Friday No 554 by Laurie

In my last Free For All Friday, I wrote about how I use my monthly pages in my Filofax. I print undated monthly grids and fill them in by hand. In order to fill out my planner pages, I reference lots of different calendars.

First of all, because the monthly pages are undated, I have to reference an annual calendar to write in the dates. (I use the Philofaxy annual calendars.)

I write in holidays. For reference I use a Holidays and Observances page from a Franklin Planner I bought a couple of years ago. It has US holidays and special days for 2017-2022.

I write in birthdays and anniversaries. I keep these on Birthdays, Anniversaries and Special Occasions Filofax pages (which, surprisingly, are still made).  I've had them for at least 15 years. I use the Personal size, and have trimmed the corner so they fit in my A5 Filofax.

I use my kids' school calendar to fill in school dates like holidays and half days, school events, etc.

It sounds tedious but it's really not that bad, and it's worth it to me to have everything in one calendar and not have to look at a bunch of different calendars all year to see what's happening.

Do you use different calendars to fill in your planner pages?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/ or discuss anything ring binder organizer related!

Lefax 1988 Full Catalogue

Again thank you to Sheldon in Canada for sending me this particular Lefax 1988 catalogue. I've included the price list as well, but we have seen that one before, but never the full catalogue that went with it.

The Charterhouse organiser you will see here. It is a different form of Duplex to those we normally see.

As you will see it's very detailed and runs to some 64+ pages. I've added a break to the 'picture heavy' post.

Philofaxy Meet Up - London June 2019

Last Saturday, we had another meet up in London. You will recognise a few of the 'regulars' in the photos, but we did have a few new people attend as well, which was great of course.

We of course met at the usual venue in Central London, we picked our usual quiet spot on the first floor and the back of the restaurant.

I would like to thank Jené and Jacqui for sending me the photos for this post. I didn't get chance to take many photos, I was too busy changing rings and chatting with people!

I took along my Filofax Winchester and my VDS A5 (inside the bag!)

Jacqui and Karina

Me explaining something!

Louise and Jené

Julian and Max

Karina, Caroline, Max

Steve describing the vintage internals of his Winchester

Ring surgery in progress.

Thank you to everyone who came along. I've already been asked for another meet up later this year. Keep a look out for announcements.

And if you are wondering where Web finds is, it will be here later today, it is delayed this week because I'm travelling all day Tuesday!

Returning to the fold - by Anita

I decided to resign as a member of the Philofaxy team back in April 2018 and whilst it was the right decision at the time, I admit that I was little sad to leave.

Life since then has been pretty busy with family commitments and I haven't had much time for myself. I initially wasn't sure if I could attend the London meet up, but decided that I would make it a priority so that I could have a proper day off just for me. I had such a great time and as the day progressed a thought popped into my head - "Why not rejoin Philofaxy?" I enjoy writing posts and being a part of the community, so I mentioned it to Steve and thankfully the answer was, "Yes!" as to whether I would be welcome back or not!

I look forward to writing some more soon and giving you an update on what I'm currently using.

10 Years Not Out....

Today is 10 years since my very first post here on Philofaxy.

I still consider it to be quite an honour to have been invited to be part of the site. In the last ten years a lot has happened, both to me and to Philofaxy.

In the beginning...

Let us start at the beginning. I bought my first Filofax Winchester back in 1986. I used it more as a journal than a planner, although I didn't realise that back then. By the early 1990's I had stopped using my Filofax and had gone over to using a Casio Digital Diary, a Psion 5Mx succeeded that gadget a few years later, and a fancy HP iPaq followed in 2004.

Filofax rediscovered...

By 2005 though I started a new job where I wasn't allowed to use any 'personal electronic devices' in the office because of the security regulations. So no mobile phones, no PDA's etc. So I went back to using a Filofax, my trusty Winchester at first. An A5 Finsbury soon followed that because it was easier to create inserts for.

Discovering Philofaxy...

Almost by accident in about 2008 I discovered Philofaxy. I think I was looking for inserts or similar to download and print out. In the time I had not been using my Filofax, a lot had changed to the company, the range of inserts had reduced drastically and I still had some of the old inserts in my brief case unused, and I was looking for some similar replacements.

Naturally, I found the blog interesting reading and set myself a goal to read all of the posts and comments from the very start. I took me a few days to do that, but it was quite an education.

I had started to recreate inserts and design my own pages which I shared on another website and I shared links to the inserts in the comments on Philofaxy.

Joining the team....

I had been in contact with Nan with regards to something on Philofaxy. Then to my surprise in 2009 Nan emailed me and asked me if I would like to join her and be part of the team to improve and contribute to the blog. Of course I said yes!

Now, a confession! I don't consider myself to be a natural writer (ok you have noticed!). It took me two attempts to pass my English Language exam at school, I did the second exam at night classes when I started work back in 1975. Whilst my ability has improved over the years, it slightly terrified me to be writing on such a public web site as Philofaxy.

I actually sent Nan my first few posts asking her to check them before I published them. Nan said just publish them Steve, no need to send her them every time.... OK then here goes!!

Additionally I had no clue as to what to write about. I didn't really consider myself to be a Filofax expert or a planner expert of any sort! OK I've learnt a lot about every aspect in the last ten years and as I've learnt so I've shared it with you.

Laurie joined the team soon after me, Laurie was already running her own Plannerisms site and was a very experienced Filofax user. We got to meet for the first time in April 2010.

I was still working and still living in UK in my first year on Philofaxy, so initially posts were not that regular or planned in any way really.

The readership started to increase as we all started to post more content. We settled in to some routine posts that you still see to this day.

The move to France...

In late May/early June 2010 I finished working and moved to France. At first I didn't know what I was going to do each day, I was scared I wouldn't have enough to do to keep myself occupied... ha ha!! Philofaxy took care of that!!

We were soon up to one post per day, every day of the week. I'm not sure how we have managed to keep up that pace for so long. Some weeks even now I have more posts than there are days in the week and I have to shuffle them around a bit! Let's hope we can continue bringing new or reasonably new content to the blog in to the future.

As I found my feet I started to introduce new ideas Philofaxy, some of them were just spare of the moment ideas, others were things I had seen done on other non-planner sites which I adapted to suit Philofaxy.

At this point of this post I could continue to describe all the things we have introduced to the blog in great detail, but I think that would be too much like 'blowing my own trumpet'!!

Instead I would like to focus on now and the future.

I've never considered myself 'the expert', I've learned a lot in the last ten years, mainly the hard way! As a former engineer, I am naturally inquisitive about how things go together and how things are made, I am always asking the question why?

I also wouldn't consider myself an expert in planning/organisation, again I've learned from others and from reading books, I will admit that only in the last couple of years do I think I'm getting the full use from my organiser.

In a way I have shared things as I have discovered them on the blog. I hope to continue to do that in the future we well.

This year I celebrated my 60th birthday, will I still be writing on Philofaxy in 10 years time? I honestly don't know, but I am certainly not stopping... I still have quite a few things I want to do in our community.

I would like to thank you all for your continued help and support in the last 10 years, for all the messages, the guest posts, the discussions face to face, on Skype. It has been a very memorable time in my life that is for sure.

Here is to the future of Philofaxy.

Thank you.

Free For All Friday - No. 553 by Steve

I know I'm in the main preaching to the converted here... but there is one thing I love about a Filofax or any paper planner.... They don't go out of date.

How many times in say the last 20 or 30 years have you bought the latest and greatest bit of tech or the newest version of software that within 6-12 months it had been replaced by something new and shiny that was supposed to be even better than the previous one?

It is a continuing evolving upward trend. I would hate to add up the cost of the computing devices large and small I've spent money on in the last 40 years, starting with an Acorn Atom in 1980, which I built from a kit, up to my latest acquisition a new Apple iMac, they are leagues apart!

Every 'new' development involves learning new software or how to do things.... A Filofax you just pick it up and use it... it has not changed in nearly 100 years!

As it is Friday of course you can discuss anything ring bound related.... enjoy your weekend.
