Guest Post - Lefax Pocket Size.

Thank you to Nifty from Notebook Stories for this post.

In going through some the old supplies in my Filofax collection, I came across this packet of Lefax branded inserts. It made me curious about what sorts of pocket size organizers Lefax offered... but when I started digging into it, I couldn't find a single trace of Lefax pocket size organizers or inserts anywhere on the internet!

As Philofaxy readers will know, Lefax was actually the original Filofax-- the history is that they were an American company that started making ring-bound organizers in 1910. These were mainly used as handbooks of technical information-- you can see some examples in this eBay listing and in this Philofaxy post

A British company called Norman & Hill started importing them in 1921, but then started selling their own organizers under the name Filofax. This may be why Lefax registered their trademark in 1926. Filofax registered their trademark in 1930, and the two companies co-existed until 1992 when Filofax bought Lefax. They used the name for a few years but eventually phased it out.

(Sad but sort of amusing: Lefax is now the trademarked name of a German pharmaceutical product intended to alleviate flatulence.)

Philofaxy's archive has a few old Lefax catalogs, but they only show the standard "personal" size organizers and inserts (95mm x 171mm page size) -- the only exception was something called the Lefax Soho, which was a small square format with only 3 rings-- as if you'd sawed a personal size organizer in half. It would not have been compatible with my inserts.

My Lefax insert packet contains the "One Cash Column" insert, with the reference number P5001 and the copyright date 1987. Philofaxy's 1988 Lefax catalog lists all their inserts including a regular "personal" size one cash column insert with ref #5001-- so it looks like "P" would be added to model numbers to indicate the pocket size version.

My inserts have hole punching to match both 4 and 6 ring pocket organizers. This is interesting because Filofax didn't start selling 6-ring pocket organizers until 1994. The 4-ring pattern allowed inserts to fit the 4 inner rings of larger personal organizers, but why would Lefax bother to make a smaller sheet if they didn't make smaller organizers? Did Lefax try to sell inserts for other brands of pocket looseleaf notebooks, and that's why it was 6-hole compatible before Filofax's own inserts were?

My Lefax inserts still have the sticker from when I bought them at a Rizzoli Bookstore in the early 1990s. It was probably about a year after the Filofax/Lefax merge, as the number "9311" appears on the sticker, which I think means the product was received in November 1993. The store seems to have labeled it as being the corresponding Filofax insert, so perhaps all the Lefax inventory was being absorbed into the rest of the stock at the company's warehouse, and they shipped this mixed in with Filofax branded inserts, intentionally or by accident.

The label also shows a number FKP420302. 420302 was probably the reference number used by Filofax for a pocket size single cash column insert. But although the 1993 catalog at Philofaxy and 1992 catalog show Journal Single Cash with reference numbers ending in 302 for Personal and Deskfax sizes, they don't show any availability of a pocket size version.

Within a few years, the single cash journal seems to have been phased out and only a double-column cash journal insert was sold until sometime between 2007 and 2010, when it stopped appearing in the catalogs. I couldn't find any mention anywhere of Filofax ever having offered a pocket size single cash journal insert-- the closest thing would have been an Expenses insert, #210605. I know Filofax's catalogs are not always 100% accurate vs. the actual products that were in the market at the time, but this makes me wonder if they just made up the reference number 420302 when they realized they had some existing Lefax inventory they had to deal with fitting into their product offerings?

I'm left with a mystery: did Lefax ever make pocket size organizers? If so, what happened to them? Why didn't their catalogs list any pocket size inserts? Why aren't there more references to them that have trickled down into today's wealth of images and data on the internet? I'm hoping someone out there in the Philofaxy community will read this and have their own pocket size Lefax show and tell to share with us!

Thank you Nifty, if you can shine some light on this Lefax Pocket size mystery, please leave a comment below.

And thanks again to Nifty from Notebook Stories for their contribution to Philofaxy.

Free For All Friday No. 829 - By Steve

As we approach the last three months of the year, I'm sure you are close to deciding which diary insert to use next year.

Filofax by including the QR codes have turned a large proportion of people off using their ready printed inserts. Yes you can opt for their personalised insert without the QR codes, but the range of layouts available is a little limited.

This is also the time of year when a lot of us start considering changing size, either downsizing or upsizing. For example A5 to Personal size or vice versa.

Have you decided yet what you will be using next year? Leave a comment below. Of course it's Friday so please feel free to discuss anything Filofax related.

Your First Filofax?

Testing out the search on Philofaxy the other day I came across some posts from 2013 (11 years ago) this followed our Skype chat last weekend.

During the Skype chat Jess was telling us about her first Filofax organisers. Her first one was a Cobalt Blue Calipso Compact

Jess later moved on to the Osterley model in two of the colours, she was showing us one of her Osterleys, which she uses for all her spare inserts and future months diary inserts.

Her is Jess with her Osterley at the Washington DC meet up that I attended back in June 2015.

This search https://philofaxy.blogspot.com/search/label/Calipso bought up two great posts! Take a read of the posts from Susan and Zoe

I'm sure we all remember our 'First Filofax/Organiser' What was yours?

Respond in the comments or if you want to go the extra mile submit a short post with a couple of photos to philofaxy at gmail dot com

Digging back in to the archives

Finding older posts on Philofaxy isn't easy. With nearly 6500 published posts in 19 years it isn't easy to remember when a specific post was published, even for me!

Using the Labels Cloud can help you narrow things down, or the Search This Blog. These are accessed using the full web version of the site not the mobile version.

If you are using a mobile and scroll to the bottom of the page and tap on 'View web version' Turning your phone to landscape will help you read the full width site.

And if you still can't find what you are looking for.... ask the question on the most recent FFAT (Free For All Tuesday) or FFAF (Free For All Friday) post.

For instance you will find most of our 'Winchester' posts here.

https://philofaxy.blogspot.com/search/label/Winchester

Plenty of great posts on just one topic.... dig deeper in to the archives.

Back in 2008/9 soon after discovering the Philofaxy blog I read every post at the time, about 230 posts.... I'm sorry if I've made that challenge even harder now!  If you skipped the Web Finds posts you might be able to manage a year of posts a month or a year every two weeks.

Happy Hunting.

Free for All Friday No. 828 by Nan

If you're reading this, your ring organizer is probably by your side right now. In fact, it probably goes with you almost everywhere.

But do you have another "must-have"? Or two?

Your mobile phone, travel mug of coffee, wristwatch or smart watch?

If I could narrow it down to any two things, it would be my organizer and my Samsung tablet, since these two things make just about everything possible for me! (I don't like to do much on my mobile phone except calls and text messages.)

As always on Friday, all topics are fair game!

Experienced User - Kim

This week we learn how Kim uses her Filofax.

1. When did you buy your first organiser and what was it?

It was in the mid 90s

2. Out of the organisers you own which is your current favourite (Style and Size)?

I have a lovely small Filo that is about 3x5 " in burgundy leather. They one for my wedding in 1999 it was blue and about 6x9

3. How many Filofax or other brands of organisers do you own?

Three!

4. What do you use your organisers for?

Keeping my many different interests and jobs in order. I couldn't survive without it.

5. How many sections do you have in your organiser and what is each section used for?

Only the calendar and address book

6. If you could design your own Filofax what would it feature?

I think my little Filo is perfect. They thought of everything: calendar and address book, a pocket for cash, a small zipper section for change, slats for credit and business cards in the front and place for a pencil that is beneath the strap that snaps shut.

7. What was the last movie you watched?

Challengers..the tennis movie. I loved it!

9. What was the last book you read?

The autobiography of Isabella Stewart Gardner

10. When did you start using an organiser?

It's hard to remember! But, I think it was 1997

11. How has your use of an organiser changed over the years?

Yes, it has. I have used it as a general calendar so I can see a week and a month at a time. It is hard to pretend the phone calendar doesn't exist b/c so many events come with ready links to the calendar. It's easier to accept them. However, after abandoning the Filofax for a number of years I have rekindled my love for it's straightforward, no nonsense information organization. It makes me feel less anxious to see the week at at glance with all the info I need in one place and not on a tiny screen.

12. Which diary format works best for you and why?

Week at a glance. I need to see what I have each day at once so that I won't miss anything.

13. What other information do you keep and maintain in your organiser?

I have phone numbers of importance: family, friends, stores. I love the month at a glance to keep things in perspective. My Filofax also has a wallet and change purse in it, which is handy despite the reality I rarely use cash!

14. What routines and structures do you use?

I have found that I can carry my Filofax with me and my phone in my purse. I use a pencil to keep daily dates in my Filofax and at night I transcribe the events that are on my phone. I find that this system works for me to not miss appointments b/c I am looking at my whole schedule at night for the next day.

I fell out of the habit of keeping a written schedule for a bunch of years and eventually, lately, I realized I was missing events and appointments b/c I wasn't seeing my weekly schedule and only relying on the alerts from my phone and those weren't obvious enough...so I missed things.

15. Do you use one binder or several, and if several, how do you use them?

I used to use two,  many years ago when I was decorating and I had one for my wedding too!

16. Tell us about your You Tube channel

My channel is connected to my Blog, Women's Survival Guide. It hosts the women I interview and small videos I do on an array of subjects like my Filofax! www.womenssurvivalguide.com

Thank you Kim.

Free For All Friday No. 827 by Laurie

The thickness of the paper in your binder makes a big difference in the weight, bulk, and number of pages the rings can hold.

In the past, Filofax brand inserts were 70 gsm. A few years ago they increased to 80 gsm to make them more fountain pen friendly.

Some planner brands use paper that is 100 gsm or even 120 gsm, to prevent show through and bleed through of inks.

Paper doesn't have to be super-thick to prevent inks bleeding through. Tomoe river paper and other similar papers are very thin, but are specially treated to prevent ink bleed-through. The thinness of the paper allows a ring binder to hold more pages. However, if you print your own pages, very thin paper can be problematic when going through a printer.

What thickness of paper do you prefer? Do you like thin paper for reduced bulk? Do you like thick paper for better ink performance? Or do you like something in the middle?

As always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/ or discuss anything ring binder organiser related!

Guest post series - 'Filohax' No. 14 - Paul

Thanks very much again to Paul for this fourteenth instalment of his wonderful guest post series.

Filohax Gloucester review

Second of my recent purchases is the Gloucester.

First a bit of back story.

Since reconnecting with my Filofax past, I've made it known in my friends and contacts circles that I am 'Mr Filofax', and this had bagged me an unwanted Personal Pimlico from my friend network. However, I hit the big time when a contact of a contact had an old unused and unwanted Filofax. Several very poor photos were emailed which gave nothing away, until I asked for a photo of any serial number visible on an inside cover. When I saw the serial number '6CL 7/8' I knew I had hit pay dirt, and I'm too embarrassed to say how low a fee I paid (let's just say I hit the 'bullseye' 😉).

I realised I had a few more bonus' once I received it; the first was its almost pristine condition (save for a slight scuff on the bottom of the front cover), but the real one was realising I had purchased the working binder of a Filofax trainer from the mid 1980's, as it contained a 44 page 'Filofax Retail staff development course' punched course notes, again in mint condition. I had a bit of a chat with the now 80 year old ex trainer, but he could only recall delivering this training in high end London stores such as John Lewis and Harrods to sell 'to the yuppies '!... well it was 40 years ago!).

Its condition was as to be expected for a binder used for a short period in the 1980's, and then stored flat in a drawer for nearly 40 years - clean-ish but dry and quite poor flatability.

After cleaning and feeding the leather it's looking as good as new, and the rings are as good as if purchased yesterday (well, maybe not yesterday if quality standards these days are anything to go by!)

As with my other recent purchase, the Argyll, the Gloucester doesn't have ring protectors and as a consequence, I've come to appreciate the aesthetic qualities of the 'ring impressions' this lack leaves in the leather. Due to the Gloucester's lack of use this isn't yet showing, but as I've moved my work inserts into the Gloucester I'm hoping that these will break in soon as I love the 'lived in look' of vintage Filofax. One major benefit I'm finding from using it for work is its lack of fastener - I use a man bag and can be pulling the Filofax in and out of it 30 times a day, so now there is no fastener to snag on the bag.

The other benefit of these 'clean lines' is the lack of a pen loop - ordinarily this would pose a problem, but as I use a pen loop WITHIN the 7/8 rings there is nothing to snag on the bag as I retrieve it. A real benefit for using the Gloucester for work. I also love the authentic quality of the leather - it just feels like calf hide cut to shape and dyed, that's it, no padding or stiffening giving a very straightforward feeling.

Do any Gloucester owners have any insights or stories to tell?
