A Date For Your Diary - Sunday 5 April 2020

With most of us in lock down at the moment, we are going to run another conference round-table voice/video chat using Skype. Think of it as a 'virtual meet-up'

When? - Sunday 5 April at the following times:
  • Los Angeles 8:00 am,
  • Denver 9:00 am
  • Dallas 10:00 am,
  • New York 11:00am,
  • London 4:00 pm
  • Paris 5:00 pm etc.
Do not worry if you aren't available at the start of our session it will last 2-3 hours, so pop up when you are available and say hello.

Where? - an on-line chat using Skype. with voice and video (if you wish). Please make sure you have the latest version of Skype.

What do I need? - just a micro-phone and some head phones(in ear phones work fine) and a free Skype account. Using headphones or earphone reduces 'echo' on the call. Video is optional, but a few of us will be on video as well.

Who - All of you... connect up with Philofaxy and we will attempt to get as many of us linked in to the audio conference as possible. Come and listen if you don't want to chat.  What do we talk about? Filofax stuff... but anything else as well. It's like long lost friends meeting up for coffee and a catch up.. but don't worry if you have never joined in before... you are an old friend too!

If you have any questions you want to ask then please let us know in the group or before we start.

How -
  1. Connect to Philofaxy by firstly searching for Philofaxy in Skype, I will then add you as a contact.
  2. Then  'Send Contact Request',  I will then add you in to the chat room.
  3. Then if you request it, I can add you to the audio conference as well. But if you just want to chat via keyboard that's fine. That way it's slightly less hectic for me!
Come and join in the fun, even if you only pop in to say hello... but don't be afraid to join in the discussion.

If you need any assistance setting up Skype, please pop a comment in this post and I will try and help you get one line. Skype is free for computer to computer calls....

Here is my post on how to improve your Skype audio with headphones or a headset.

Hope to be chatting with you on Sunday 5 April 2020.

Free For All Friday - No. 594 by Anita

Due to the coronavirus, I have been working from home for a while as my 80 year old Mum lives with us and has a number of health conditions. I have only ever worked from home before for short periods or for the odd couple of days here and there, so it's definitely been a change in my routine. In the office, I normally keep track of my to-dos using a mixture of paper and Wunderlist. I use up scrap A4 paper by folding it in half and then keep a number of these folded together (technique used by my husband).

Whilst I've been using binders for years, I have never used one for work so am wondering if I may try using an A5 in future. I will be starting a new job soon which will be exclusively working from home, so this time here in my current role will be good experience in figuring out what works best for me. I was due to start my new job in May, but unsurprisingly my current employer has asked if I can delay my resignation, so I may end up doing both part time roles from home for a while.

Are you considering a change in your planner due to the coronavirus' effects on your life?

And as always, please feel free to discuss anything Filofax or ringbound organiser related.
Have a great weekend.

There and Back Again: a Kensington's Tale - by Anita

I have bought and sold many binders over the years, but rarely have seller's regret.
In hindsight, I have often been a little too keen to sell, but have realised recently that I have pushed myself to own only the one when keeping more is allowed! Like many in the community, I don't smoke, barely drink and in general am a fairly frugal person, so owning more than one isn't going to cause any financial issues. Organisers help me stay sane and I enjoy using them.

With all this in mind, I realised that since I purchased my first Filofax back in 2009, one fairly unassuming one has really become my favourite, my black personal Kensington. I first purchased it from eBay back in 2014 and it has also belonged to three other people in the Philofaxy community. The lovely Deb gifted it back to me in 2016, but I sent it back to her the following year as I was again trying to get back down to just the one and couldn't see myself using solely a black organiser.

Once again, I am so lucky for her kindness as when I got in contact, she was happy to return it again and didn't allow me to pay for shipping. Thank you, Deb.

I'm using the same simplified set up that I've been using for nearly two years now, except that I have now added an additional section for projects.

After the last London Philofaxy meet up, I treated myself to a TWSBI Eco fountain pen, but it's a bit too large to fit in either the Kensington's or Van der Spek's pen loops. My VdS has two pen loops, so my Staedtler Triplus fineliner lives in one and the TWSBI pen clip attaches to the other. However, how to use both pens in the Kensington? After a little experimentation, I discovered the simplest solution is for the TWSBI to live inside the rings as when the binder is closed the inserts stop the pen moving.

Deb very kindly added this little card in the package.

My Van der Spek is currently holding some spare inserts and some old notes that I need to process. I don't plan on using both the personals together any more than that, but when I fancy a change or need more colour, I will then move back into the Van der Spek.

Back in April 2018, this was my version of my planner peace:

Pocket size Raydori, red personal Winchester and A5 lined Leuchtturm

And here is my updated 2020 version:

Raydori, Kensington, custom Van der Spek and A5 Leuchtturm

Free For All Friday - No. 593 by Steve

When the modern equivalent of a curfew descends on you in your country of residence, in my case France, you now need to valid excuse to be outside of your own house and a document to that effect (see picture).

You quickly realise you need to make some adjustments to your normal week!

My planner has been 'centre stage' this week with things being rescheduled, appointments cancelled until further notice etc.

I've been planning through a few small projects at home, but ones I can complete using only DiY supplies I already have. Not a bad thing in a way.

How are you coping?

Of course it is Friday so please free to discuss any other topic that might be around organisers of any type.

10 things I wish I had known as a Filofax newbie - by Anita

1. How valuable a resource Philofaxy is!
I'd come across the site whilst searching for Filofax, but only more seriously started reading after my first purchase. It would have been very helpful to help me choose my first binder, but I don't think it even occurred to me how much information is on the site.

2. Step away from that cherry personal Classic (my first one)
a) It will never lie flat
b) It will suffer with the known issue of bubbling/cracking of the leather coating after 10 months of gentle use.

3. Do not sell your (first) crimson Malden
A5 is not the right size for you to use as your sole binder as it's too big. Put the crimson away and try out others, but you will want it back one day.

4. Personal size is 'the one' for you
Other sizes might sound great, but personal is the best compromise of page size and portability for you:
a) A4 sounds like a great idea, but oh so heavy and too big when open on your slim desk.
b) A5 is wonderful, but just too big to carry around with me.
c) A6 is actually a close second to personal as the binders are very portable and I also like the dimensions of the paper itself (only reason for not going completely over to A6 is due to the fact that all my supplies/inserts are in personal).
d) Pocket is actually the only regular size that I've never owned. Some one gave me some pocket inserts and I decided that the page size was too small as I write lots.
e) Mini seemed a great idea for a wallet/diary combo, but the diary pages are too tiny and the zipped pockets too fiddly to get into.

5. Black binders are awesome but...
You will also need more colour, especially in the winter months. Owning just one black binder just won't suit you.

6. Trust me, you will find planner peace
It might not be what you expect and it will also vary over time. Chill.

7. You are allowed to own more than one
I'm a minimalist at heart, but I've had a recent epiphany that my cycles of selling/buying are maybe telling me that I am allowed to own more than one.

8. Using two at the same time won't really work for you
For quite some years, I used a personal as my external brain and an A5 for longer notes/planning projects. However, my focus was always so much on my personal one that I rarely looked at A5. Buy an A5 Leuchtturm instead as it's much more portable.

9. Buying too many in a year will make you feel crazy
It's fairly easy for me to go on a slightly manic decluttering spree and if I've bought too many, there's a good chance I may sell them all when I don't really need to.

10. Enjoy using them and don't feel guilty about buying more
I'm always careful about how much I spend and rarely buy new, but I have got frustrated with myself sometimes when I've bought more. I'm not a collector by nature, but binders are lovely tactile objects, so I do enjoy using them to help me become more organised and feel more sane. Like many people in the community, I don't smoke, barely drink and am a pretty frugal person in general, so I figure owning a couple of lovely organisers is allowed...
