Free For All Friday No. 690 by Anita

As I've been working from home since March 2020, I admit that I've been thinking more about the possibility of moving over completely to A5 size, as portability isn't as much of a requirement anymore. Due to COVID, our household is still not out and about much either, so I could see my A5 Original working as my sole binder for everything. However, I think that I've been using personal as my main binder for so many years that I think that I've gotten used to the narrow paper dimensions, plus I think that I'd find it hard to move away from my trusty Kensington, so I will be staying with A5 for work and personal for everything else.

Have you been considering a change in planner size due to changes that have come about due to COVID or your career?

And as always, please feel free to discuss anything organiser related and I hope that you have a great weekend.

Filofax Global Catalogue 2007

Today we strap ourselves in to the DMC12, charge the flux capacitor and reset the time machine to 2007, it shouldn't take us long to get there once we hit 88 miles per hour!

With thanks to Jens in Japan we have this 2007/2008 Filofax catalogue and the local price list for Japan.

As this is an image heavy post (80 images) I have put break points at intervals in the post.

How Compact is Compact A5

I was asked recently about how I manage to use A5 for all of my planning requirements. Also how do I manage to carry around an A5 (when I need to) and what I use on a regular basis.

L-R Top row: Chameleon A5 , VdS Custom A5, Holborn A5
L-R Bottom row: Chester Compact A5, William Hannah A5, Heritage Compact A5

Naturally I try to use what I already own. I had a look through the Filofax site to dig out their size information and came up with the following table it was quite surprising.

Model Holborn
A5 Clasp
Lockwood
 A5 Clasp
Heritage
Compact A5
Chester
Compact A5
William
Hannah A5
Height 235mm 230mm 233mm 235mm 222mm
Width 185mm 195mm 185mm 178mm 168mm
Depth 35mm 40mm 28mm 25mm 35mm
Ring Size 25mm 25mm 15mm 15mm 20mm discs

I have certainly used the Holborn, Heritage and Chester in the table above. I have a Lockwood, but it is the Zip version rather than the clasp version.

I have included the William Hannah A5 Notebook, which whilst it is a different system, it is as capable of being used as a planner as easily as a ring bound organiser. It is narrower in overall size because the disc system takes up less space in the spine of the cover.

Out of the above selection the Holborn A5 clasp is a winner for me, with it's excellent internal layout, I get around the single pen loop by using a Lamy Multi-Pen, which has a pen and pencil insert.

My A5 Custom Van der Spek is my most used A5, it has similar dimensions to the Filofax Lockwood listed above and it is fitted with two pen loops.

Slightly older now, but the A5 Chameleon from about 10 years ago is another A5 organiser worth considering with 25mm rings and two pen loops, the rear inside cover has a notepad slot as well. The size is the same as the Holborn A5.

What can you fit in to 15 or 25mm rings?

I have no difficulty fitting a full 12 months of a week on two page diary insert printed on Clairefontaine 80 gsm A5 paper. In 15mm rings I have to be a little more selective about what other pages to include, but I can carry all my essential information and some spare inserts in 15mm.

I don't have to make this sacrifice with 25mm rings, I can fit in all of my pages with dividers etc in to that size without any difficulty.

To carry any of these A5 organisers doesn't require a large bag, I use a small camera bag/messenger bag as my regular every day bag. It has an iPad slot in the back of the internal compartment. It will hold any of the organisers whilst still leaving me room to carry other essentials in the bag and without it getting too heavy on my shoulder.

It helps if you review the content of your organiser on a regular basis making sure you aren't carrying around notes and pages you don't currently need, archive them if they are no longer required.

I've focussed on the A5 size in this post, mainly because that is the size I'm more comfortable using, but the same processes can be applied to other sizes to use smaller size and thinner organisers to make your planner easier to take with you anywhere, so you always have the information and your diary to hand.

Free for All Friday No. 689 by Nan

For me, there's nothing more helpful than an organizer when you're juggling lots of projects and responsibilities at once--volunteer work, home maintenance, child or elder care, pets, school, and sports, to name a few--in addition to your job!

A change in my life always seems to lead to a change in my needs in an organizer. And the past 2 years have been nothing if not full of change!

Recently, an increase in the number of balls I need to keep in the air has led me to switch to a smaller format--half-letter/A5 as opposed to letter/A4--because portability has become more of an issue. It feels so good to be able to carry all the information and paper I need no matter what the day brings!

What size are you reaching for these days?

As always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything Filofax related!

Flatability - What is that all about....

Flatability is a term invented by our friend Neil to describe how easily an organiser opens and stays flat without you having to hold it open.

I know I've struggled in the past with organisers that struggle to stay open, 'training' them to lay flatter.

I think the worst case of this was my Cuban Zip, it's a lovely Personal size organiser with large 30mm rings. Whilst I can get it to lay flat, as soon as I zipped it closed and then reopened it was back to as it was before, it needs flexing again to lay flat!

Neil has produced some excellent videos in which he reviews different Filofax models from the 'back catalogue', naturally he gives them all a 'Flatability' score.

His videos also cover how he uses his organisers and his GTD set up.

Very recently Neil has added his channel to Patreon and there is some exclusive content to be had on that platform. So take a look, the lowest tier costs less than a cup of coffee, please give Neil some support.

Enjoy.

Landmark Life Events....

You know you are getting old when you realise that your next birthday will be 50 years since you became a teenager.. Yep that's me!

I got thinking the other day, what dates in the year 1972 should I celebrate that made an impact on my life all these years later?

It was that year that I really started to take an interest in pop music for various reasons. And looking at my album collection of what music I still listen to 50 years later, a lot of it was first released from 1972 onwards.

I did some further research on the dates or at least the months when particular albums were released and I've started to make notes of these in my organiser.

I then started looking at films (movies) that came out back then. Most of them you will see at Christmas on TV! All the old favourites.

March this year it is 50 years since 'Dirty Harry' was first shown, the Clint Eastwood Police film with the infamous line 'Make my day punk' ! Call me old fashioned but they don't make them like that any more!!!

This is starting to build up in layers of things to remember, I might have to resort to using a separate nostalgia month per page diary insert!

Do you remember dates from the past in your organiser?

Free For All Friday - No. 688 by Steve

If you have more than a few organisers, do you have any favourites?

The ones you always come back to after a brief break from whilst you have used others in your 'collection'

They are also the ones you will never sell or giveaway no matter what their flaws are!

I'm often asked so 'How many do you own....?' and I reply and then the obvious follow question comes up, 'Which is your favourite?'

Well the picture to the above I think sums up my favourites. My two Van der Spek Custom A5's. The older dark brown one has 35mm rings in it and I use it as my 'reference organiser' it has all my maps and information pages in it. Stuff I need to hand when I'm at home or as a safe storage place between travels.

The lighter brown A5 is my constant companion with my planner and a few notes pages in it, but not a lot else. It has things stored in the pockets I need if I'm out and about. Although I don't always carry this with me.

So what is your favourite? But as it is a Friday don't forget you are more than welcome to discuss anything organiser related.

Have a great weekend.
