Free For All Friday No 703 by Laurie

A couple of months ago my teenager expressed interest in using a Filofax to help him organize his school assignments and upcoming exams. As you can imagine, I was thrilled!

He wanted a classic-looking Filofax with a black cover. He wanted an A5 for the page size, and as we all know an A5 Filofax can be bulky. So I gave him my A5 Boston Filofax, a discontinued model with small rings, resulting in a slim and surprisingly portable A5 binder.

He loves the soft leather, but was always afraid of scratching or staining it and felt like he had to be precious with it, which wasn't practical for a planner that needed to go in and out of his backpack multiple times per day. Also, even though the Boston is slimmer than most A5s, he wanted something more portable.

So he bought a black personal size Metropol, and loves it. Because it's not leather, and not a discontinued model, he doesn't have to worry so much about the cover (although he does still wrap it in a soft cloth before putting it in his backpack because he wants to keep it looking nice).

He enjoys the portability of the personal size, and loves the tabbed sections for his diary pages, lists, and various notes.

He is feeling more organized and in control of his school work now with his trusty Filofax!

Any new and exciting Filofax news in your world lately?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/ or discuss anything Filofax related!

London Meet Up - April 2022

Last Saturday we held another meet up in London. There was only four of us on the day, but I think we all enjoyed the time together, catching up and swapping information.

I don’t think UK has fully recovered from COVID yet, listen to the government and they will tell you it’s all over, get on with your life. But in reality it’s still with us to a lesser degree. Therefore it wasn’t a shock to me that on the day of the meet up we had a couple of people cancel because they had a positive test the day before or on the morning of the meet up.

The restaurant wasn’t as crowded as in previous years. They are also still doing their ordering via a website from your table which doesn’t always work for everyone. I would much prefer it if they would go back to their old ‘smart card’ system that just worked so easily.

I’m going to make enquires with the company to see if this table service ordering system is going to be here to stay or not.

Should we look at alternatives? Does anyone know of a restaurant chain in London that has an ordering system that lets people order their own things and only pay for what they ordered? Splitting large bills is not something I want to go back to!

Places to go shopping even in central London have reduced in the last year. The large Paperchase in Tottenham Court Road, has closed. John Lewis still stock Filofax organisers and inserts, but the choice is a little limited.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event. I enjoy them every time.

I am hoping to be back in UK later this year once my family have moved house, so if you missed this one, look out for announcements later this year.

Free For All Friday - No. 702 by Anita

Whilst reading this article by David Allen, it started me thinking about where I am currently with regards to using my Filofaxes.

Due to recovering from carer burnout, I haven't yet done my planned clear out of my Kensington and I'm also not using my A5 Original as much for work.

So, I think that it's time for me to sit down and consider my current reality and the simplest way for me to move forward to where I want to be with how I use them both. I guess that this post is me starting to think about this process, so I will be writing a follow up post when I decide. The good news is that all the important stuff is getting done, so it's more about catching up on any backlog, fine-tuning and tidying up.

What is your current reality with regards to your set up, and have you been thinking about what next step you need to take to make any changes?

And as always on Fridays, please feel free to discuss anything organiser related.
I hope that you have a good weekend.

21 April 2022

Filofax on TV and in films.

It is many years now since the first time someone spotted a Filofax in a film or as part of a TV show.

Janet has built up a very comprehensive list of these 'appearances' over the years.

What started out as a trickle is now a flood of sightings. Almost a week doesn't go by without someone spotting an appearance and Janet is 'tagged' to alert her of another addition to the list.

I suspect it is the popularity of 80's drama at the moment, and what better prop to anchor something in the 1980's than a Filofax!

The script writers obviously don't realise that there are a lot of us still using them 40 or more years later!

What do you do if you spot a Filofax whilst watching TV?

Comparing the Filofax Cavendish and the Filofax Kensington

The Filofax Cavendish and Filofax Kensington were both sold by Filofax at about the same time, late 1999 to about 2003.  You will of course find examples of these two models still for sale on auction sites at various price points.

They were both sold in a variety of other sizes, but in this post I will be comparing the Personal size as I own them both in that size!

L - R Cavendish and Kensington

Both are made in leather, the Cavendish describes it as 'Deluxe Leather' It is also padded, so it feels softer in the hand. The Kensington 'Real Leather'  feels like it would be more hard wearing in repeated daily use.

For those of you that care about such things, the Kensington has square corners, where as the Cavendish has rounded corners.

The Cavendish feels stiffer compared to the Kensington, which also has some sort of stiffener between the leather covers, but thinner, so less intrusive.

I'm sure Neil would give the Kensington a better 'Flatability' score compared to the Cavendish. They do however lay open reasonably flat, the Cavendish requires a little training.

Both feature Krause type rings, i.e. not riveted in. The Cavendish only came with 30mm rings where as the Kensington comes in regular Filofax 23mm rings. So it is slimmer in overall bulk.

L - R Cavendish and Kensington

The Cavendish being thicker because of the larger rings it has two pen loops, the left (front) one is bigger than the right (rear) one. The Kensington has just the single pen loop fixed to the rear cover. Neither model has elasticated pen loops.

The interior front of both include 8 horizontal card slots. They both also have a full height slip pocket behind the card slots.

Top Cavendish, Below Kensington

They have different designs for the rear inside cover.

Top Cavendish, Below Kensington

The Cavendish has a similar width full height slip pocket but in addition it has a three quarter height secretarial pocket on the inside rear cover.

The Kensington has a full height slip pocket behind a gusseted vertical zip pocket, that has a leather flap over the zipper.

The Kensington has a plain back cover with just the clasp attached to it. The Cavendish has a zip pocket on the back cover which can take the odd paper ticket or similar. Very useful if you don't want to open the organiser each time. The zip is nicely concealed by leather flaps on both sides of the opening.

L - R Cavendish and Kensington

These days you might pay a similar price for either organiser in similar good condition. Back in 2000 the Cavendish Personal retailed for £65 and it was available in four colours (Black, Brown, Burgundy, Navy). In the same catalogue the Kensington Personal is listed at £46 and it was available in six colours (Black, Brown, Burgundy, Navy, Red, Green.

The other notable fact about the Kensington is that it was available in almost all sizes then. (Mini, Pocket, Slimline, Personal, A5, Deskfax and A4. The only sizes missing M2 and Compact! However, not all sizes had all colours. The Cavendish was available in Mini,  Pocket, Compact and Personal sizes.

Free For All Friday - No 701 by Steve

Using an organiser put me in touch with a distant relative this week, someone I hadn't heard from in half a century or more!

Let me explain.... Although I don't have any brothers or sisters, both my parents came from large families. Looking at our family tree I have lots of cousins and relatives spread around.

Some of them I've managed to keep in contact with via Friends Reunited and more recently via Facebook or Email. However, when you haven't heard from someone in 50 years or more how do you find their contact details.

Well my distant cousin found me via Philofaxy! With some help from Mr Google the Search Engine I suspect!

We have been catching up with each others lives via Email! Thank you Philofaxy!

What remarkable things have happened to you this week? Of course you can discuss anything Filofax related. Have a good weekend.
