Free For All Friday No 498 by Laurie

Me again!

Recently I revamped my Financial section in my Filofax to try to get a better handle on my budget. I've always kept track of upcoming bills in my monthly planning pages, but I decided I would prefer to see the entire year's worth of annual or semi annual bills in one view. I have several bills throughout the year that only happen once or twice each year (insurance, pet vaccines, taxes, car inspection, etc.). My bills chart lets me see these all on one page so I can see when things are coming up and how much they will cost so I can put aside savings ahead of time.

I made a really simple chart using Word with 6 months on each side of the page. So one page is January-June and the back side of the page is July-December. I created one for this year and one for next year, printed them out and popped them into my Filofax! Super easy, and now I feel like I have an eye on upcoming expenses for the next two years.

Do you make any charts or reference pages for your Filofax?

And as always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/ or discuss anything ring-binder organizer related!

  1. Hi Laurie,
One of the financial managers calls that process Sinking Funds. I haven't made mine yet but thanks to your prompt, I'll do that next weekly review.

The financial manager says you're supposed to calculate 1/12 of each expense, and add up all those 1/12s. That's how much you should set aside each month so you should always have enough to pay whenever one of those expenses come up.

Your chart is an excellent way to do that. It's on my next actions list. Thanks for the reminder.

    1. Thanks for your comment Darlene! I know in theory I should do this, but I don't. I plan to implement this going forward and be (hopefully) comfortably prepared when each bill rolls around! Having the overview of the entire year keeps me honest about how much I need to save.

  2. Hi Laurie! I've seen the Croco review, but I haven't seen the new red Croco review. Was it made on philofaxy?
