Monthly Review

January can often be a busy month, with Christmas and New Year out of the way, it's often a 'catch up' month. 

If my planner pages are anything to go by, there's been a lot to catch up on this month!

Not everyone does a formal review every week/month, but I found time over the weekend to look back over the last four weeks to check I hadn't missed anything. 

I found it easier to take the weekly pages out of my organiser and lay them in order, side by side on the table. I use 'Week on One Page + Tasks' in the form of our 1.5.1 Enhanced Time Manager insert. I was able to see all of the appointments at once, then after flipping over the pages all the tasks at once. 

Generally I'm fairly good at carrying forward not completed tasks, but with all of my alternative travel plans in the first two weeks of January, a few tasks at home had got missed out. Nothing life threatening, but annoying to have got out of sync on a few minor things. 

Having gone through the first four weeks I sat with my cup of decaffeinated coffee and prepared my pages for February and beyond. Noting down appointments and scheduled tasks from my electronic reminders. Adding in reminders for things like birthday cards etc. 

Also reminding myself that this year is a leap year so we will have 29th February next month.

Free For All Friday - No. 794 by Anita

Whilst clearing out some emails the other day, I came across one from my mobile provider thanking me for being a customer for three years. I used to have a very basic Nokia on a pay as you go contract until I changed jobs, so only purchased my first ever smartphone three years ago, as reminded by this email.

So, it's made me consider if having a smartphone has affected my use of my Filofax... and the answer is not really! As time has gone by, I suppose I do use my phone for more things, like looking at my Fitbit data, listening to guided meditations or logging work hours for my timesheet. However, on purpose I have decided not to go down the rabbit hole of trying out any to do apps on my phone, as I remember some years ago that I did this on my Mac and ultimately realised that my Filofax just works best for me. I did download a free note app though and only use this to jot down the odd to do or thought, if on the rare occasion that I'm out and about without my Filofax. 

A family member commented recently that I don't need a Filofax now that I've got my smartphone, but I suppose they just don't understand that my organiser is my external brain, plus there is something both comforting and relaxing for me about still using paper, especially now that my work is mostly paperless.

Have you found that using a smartphone has changed how you use your organiser? (or not, like me)

Are the numbers of Filofax users increasing?

Before I go any further I have no hard data to prove my thoughts either way!!

Filofax themselves will not doubt have data based on their own product sales. However, they aren't the only source of organisers or planner products these days, it's a much larger market than it was say 10 years ago, but may be not as big as 40 years ago (that would be the 1980's!) 

Mobile phones are mainly sold on the performance of their cameras or battery life and to a point the market has plateaued with new phones being not that much of an improvement over the previous years model. 

We don't see phone manufacturers boasting about how their new gizmo will improve your productivity! Apple recently added a Journal app to their iPhone operating system, but not the iPad operating system which I think is a mistake. I've not even attempted to use it though. I much prefer my untidy writing in my paper journal with my fountain pen!

Yes I'm sure we all use digital calendars and reminder apps, I do, but I rarely have them open on the screen for very long! My A5 though is always open on my desk next to me, so I can quickly glance at it to see what I am supposed to be doing etc. 

I personally think that the number of users might be increasing, not massively. Looking at the responses to questions on Facebook Groups from new member applications to join the groups, I see a lot of people stating how they used one xx years ago and they are returning to using one this year or last year and have then discovered the internet community.

Rulers

Rulers or 'Today Markers' are as useful as dividers. I use a few to make it easier to flick from one section of my organiser to another section. After all there's no rule as to how many you use!

Free For All Friday - No. 793 by Steve

Continual improvement is something I often associate with my working career. Always looking to improve your performance from on year to the next, or at least maintaining the same high standard. 

In my photography hobby, I'm always looking to try out new things, hone existing skills. This often results in me photographing the same scene at different times of the year or different times of the day. These will often be local to where I live, so no long distance trips. But occasionally I will see something and it will be something new that I've not photographed before. It might be very ordinary, but under street lights it looks very different. 

With planning I'm always looking to improve the use of my planner, making it work better for me. Or to improve my style of journaling to help improve my memories of events and even ordinary days. 

Are we asking too much of ourselves? I don't know, what about you? 

Of course it's Friday so please feel free to discuss anything around Filofax or similar organisers. 

And I'm looking forward to the Skype chats over the weekend, take care. 

Changing Your Set Up?

As we approach the end of the first month of the New Year, I'm sure a lot of you are either using the same set up that you did last year.... why change something that works. 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' as the famous saying goes....

I'm sure there are quite a few readers that have tried out a variation on last years set up or a completely new set up compared to last year.

My own set up is largely unchanged, but I'm always looking to improve it, a small tweak here or there to improve various aspects of it.

It goes without saying that there is no universal set up that will work for everyone. We all lead different lives and we all put different demands on our organisers on a daily basis. What suits one person will not suit some one else.

So I'm not going to attempt convince you to go big rings or go small rings, or A5, Personal or Pocket. There are so many variations to this common problem.....

So if your set up is working well... leave it... don't change it just on a whim. But in the case of someone who is new to paper planning or their circumstances have changed and whilst you thought it was the perfect set up it might not be working quite as you expected.

By all means change your set up in what ever way you need to to make it work..... but a word of caution.... don't make too many changes at once.

Only change one thing at a time and give it may be two weeks before you decide if that change (what ever it was) is going to make your organiser work for you.

By making your changes one step at a time you will understand the problems better and the set up will stand the test of time unless your circumstances change of course.....

Planning Household and Garden Tasks

The New Year can sometimes bring you that feeling that you have been neglecting jobs around the house or the garden. If you are shaking your head, it must be just me then! 

The list of things to do can sometimes seem a little bit overwhelming and also some jobs need to be done at a particular time of year, especially in the garden. 

I came up with a simple One Year Per Page planner which I think will help you space out the jobs through out the year and help you not feel quite so overwhelmed. 

The first page is split in to months 

And the second page I decided to split in to the four seasons which might suit gardening tasks more than household ones. 

You can of course print just one page or both. The file is sized at A4 as usual, scale to fit for A5 or A6 or B6. 

Also feel free to edit it if you need more lines or a different layout.

 We've been talking a lot about archiving lately, so I thought I'd keep the topic going. I always keep my used pages, so I have a record of every year. I toss unused diaries in recycling. (Although, if you keep them, the days of the year will eventually line up again!) 

When I take notes on specific subjects, I often insert a separate sheet of paper, so I can move it from day to day or month to month (or sometimes year to year). I archive these pages in a separate tabbed binder. Some of these pages go back more than 10 years, but each subject is kept together. This binder is just about stuffed, so I've started another one, with some variation in tab naming.

We are going to run some more 'Virtual Meet Ups' everyone is welcome.

When? - Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 January 2024 at the following time:

• Los Angeles 8:00 am, 
• Denver 9:00 am
• Dallas 10:00 am, 
• New York 11:00am, 
• London 4:00 pm 
• Paris 5:00 pm etc.  

Join in on both days if you wish. 

Do not worry if you aren't available at the start of the session each one lasts 1-2 hours, so pop up when you are available and say hello.

Where? - an on-line chat using Skype. with voice and video (if you wish)

What do I need? - just a micro-phone and some head phones(in ear phones work fine) and a free Skype account. Using headphones or earphone reduces 'echo' on the call. Video is optional, but a most of us will be on video as well.
