Lefax Price List 1921

This is a Lefax price list from 1921. It was in 1921 that Norman & Hill of London started to sell under licence Lefax binders and inserts. The brand name 'Filofax' would not be used throughout the range until many years later.

Samples for my custom Van der Spek order - by Anita

Whilst I may admire other people's Gillios and Van der Speks, I have never purchased one as I feel that I can't really justify spending that much. Back in 2016, I did order some leather samples from Van der Spek, but never went ahead with an order. I am absolutely not judging anyone else or saying that I don't think that they're worth the money, but in the past I know that I wouldn't have been comfortable with spending that much when a Filofax will do the same job. However, after deciding that I would never buy one, a very kind and generous friend got involved and I then had the funds to buy a custom Van der Spek! I am so grateful for their thoughtfulness and generosity.

Once I had a proper look at the Van der Spek website, I realised that I would need to narrow down my favourites and order some more leather samples. The ones that I ordered back in 2016 were: turchese (6219), turchese (19), black ostrich (235) and Janet Leather burgundy (109). Whilst I still quite like the idea of black ostrich on the outside and a turchese interior, I know that I always come back to a red binder in the end.

Here are the samples I ordered:

Top left: Janet Leather burgundy (109)
Top right: Janet Leather red (108)
Bottom left: Janet Leather mustard yellow (106)
Bottom right: Papavero croco

However, I then realised that I had a problem as I liked them all! How to make a decision?
I carried the samples around with me in my bag, scratched them on purpose and started pairing them up with each other to help give me some ideas. For example, I've always loved the Ascots, so one choice would've been Papavero croco on the outside with Janet Leather red on the inside. Whilst the Papvero croc is lovely, I realised over time that Janet Leather is definitely my favourite, so it was then time to make a decision about what colour to go with.

We have a winner!

Here is my order:

Inside-colour: 109 - Janet Leather Burgundy
Inside-stitching: 238 - light grey ostrich
Outside-stitching: 238 - light grey ostrich
Mechanism: 25 mm silver
Stiffener: No

I was going to get matching stitching, but was then inspired to go with contrast as I remembered how much I like it on the crimson Malden and wine Holborn. I also did consider trading up to 30mm rings, but decided against it as I'm pretty good at clearing out old notes, and I don't want it to be too heavy or take up too much space in my bag.

So, there we have it and I'm quite excited, but still have some time to wait until my order gets here. Once it comes, I will be rehoming my Ascot as I know that owning just the one binder is best for me.

A Date For Your Diary - 1 September 2019

We are going to run another conference round-table voice/video chat using Skype.

When? - Sunday 1 September at the following times:

Los Angeles 8:00 am,
Denver 9:00 am
Dallas 10:00 am,
New York 11:00am,
London 4:00 pm
Paris 5:00 pm etc.

Do not worry if you aren't available at the start of one of the session as it lasts 1-2 hours, so pop up when you are available and say hello.

Where? - an on-line chat using Skype. with voice and video (if you wish). Please make sure you have the latest version of Skype.

What do I need? - just a micro-phone and some head phones(in ear phones work fine) and a free Skype account. Using headphones or earphone reduces 'echo' on the call. Video is optional, but a few of us will be on video as well.

Who - All of you... connect up with Philofaxy and we will attempt to get as many of us linked in to the audio conference as possible. Come and listen if you don't want to chat. What do we talk about? Filofax stuff... but anything else as well. It's like long lost friends meeting up for coffee and a catch up.. but don't worry if you have never joined in before... you are an old friend too!

If you have any questions you want to ask then please let us know in the group or before we start.

How -

Connect to Philofaxy by firstly searching for Philofaxy in Skype, I will then add you as a contact.
Then 'Send Contact Request', I will then add you in to the chat room.
Then if you request it, I can add you to the audio conference as well. But if you just want to chat via keyboard that's fine. That way it's slightly less hectic for me!

Come and join in the fun, even if you only pop in to say hello... but don't be afraid to join in the discussion.

Free For All Friday No 563 by Laurie

The school year is up and running, and we are all trying to get used to being back in the busy routine of early mornings and after school activities. I keep several pages in my Filofax that are family-related to help me keep everything organized.

I keep printouts of my kids' class schedules, so that if I need to make them a doctor or dentist appointment during school time I can have them miss gym instead of math class. I also keep a schedule of after school activities so I know who is doing what and when, and if I or my husband are picking up on which days. And I have printed out the school's calendar showing which days are half days and which days there is no school, for easy reference. I have (of course) written these dates into my planner pages, but when my husband texts me to ask when he should take off work for spring break (for example) or when the kids have a long weekend, I can take a quick glance at the page and let him know easily.

Filofax Price List 1985 - Chisholms

Chisholms is a shop I used to visit quite often back in 1985-88 when I was a 'first time Filofax user'.

Sadly I don't think Chisholms are still in business. 103 Kingsway is now a travel management company, that was the store I used to go to. 63-66 Hatton Garden is now the address of a various jewellery businesses.
