Free For All Friday - No. 777 by Steve

'Non believers' and I don't mean in any form of religious sense...! Non believers in the sense of people that don't believe that they need to use a planner of any sort, digital or paper.

These are the people that need prompting to do anything, but not all services we deal with remind us when things are about to expire.

You need to be pro-active and apply before the expiry date or due date, what ever it might be.

I come across non-believers all the time in my voluntary work, and when their applications have expired they moan that they didn't receive the reminder..... even though they might have been sent two emails before the expiry date.

I always remind them that it is their responsibility to apply for renewal before the expiry date, I even suggest putting it in their Filofax (just to see what reaction I get!) or their phone calendar. Sadly they rarely seem to use either!

How do these people get through life? Answers in a short comment please!!

To my believer friends that read this blog.... you are of course welcome to discuss anything else planner related.

Have a good weekend.

Philofaxy Meet Up - London - 23rd September 2023

We held another meet up in London last Saturday that was very enjoyable.

If you have not been to a meet up, you should make a plan to get to one. Or organise one yourself in a large town/city near by, I drew up a few years ago some simple guidelines on how to set up a simple meet up.

I was expecting a lot more people to attend. I had 15/16 people on my list but five people emailed me before or on the day apologising for not being able to come for various reasons including illness, I was very grateful for this advanced notice. Sadly I don't know what happened to the others.

Five of us were sat close to the entrance of the restaurant and we would have been fairly obvious given the number of organisers on the table!! Anyway what ever...

We were pleased to have David Round from William Hannah Ltd attend. David has attended before but it was great to chat with him about his products and how the new leather options are made. He had some different samples with him so we could see and feel the differences between their classic smooth leather, tumbled leather and pebbled/textured leather.

Before we met up I had a wander in to John Lewis, their stationery department is still in the basement, but it seems to occupy less floor space than before. Also their stock of Filofax organisers was also reduced, limited to a glass cabinet, plus a small rack of inserts.

After a few hours we all went our separate ways, but it had been an enjoyable meet up and it was great to see some familiar faces once again.

After a day with the young Morton family on the Sunday, I boarded the Eurostar on Monday morning to be whisked back home to France.

I hope to organise another face to face meet up sometime in early 2024. I hope a few more people will be able to attend.  Until then, there are the 'Virtual Meet Ups' on Skype with the next one this coming Sunday

Free for All Friday No. 776 by Nan

Like many of us who use organizers, I love what I have, but I can't help lusting after what I don't have!

For example, for years I've been using a ring-bound organizer, but I can't stop looking at bound planners such as the Full Focus Planner, Hobonichi Techo, or the Therapy Journal. In fact, I've not only looked at them, I've bought them! But I don't write in them: I use them for inspiration! I can often adapt layouts and journal prompts from these books to my own organizer pages.

Do you buy to use or to copy?

As always on Fridays, feel free to discuss any other topics related to ring-bound organizers!

Gardening Tasks In Your Organiser

I'm not an expert when it comes to gardening. With a bit of research I managed to put together the pages linked below as a simple guide of what to do what month for inclusion in to my monthly pages of my organiser.

You might like to print off this simple guide for when to prune your plants and shrubs.
  • A5 When to prune (Gardening) - .docx .pdf
  • Personal When to prune (Gardening) - .docx .pdf
You might also want to use a simple year planner split in to months or the seasons to make a note of observations on when things come in to bloom, or when trees start to blossom. You can also record weather details, because frosts will have an impact on the flowering of bulbs in spring.

Download a suitable monthly or year planner from our diary inserts page, there are examples there for most sizes.

Philofaxy Industries PLC!

Imagine for a moment that Philofaxy was a company and we decided to make our own brand of organisers. Yes this is imaginary and you will see why this is never going to become reality!!

Why are we even discussing this then? I was asked recently had we ever considered having our own brand of organisers?

My initial response was no, it would cost too much money and it would take up too much time. A simple answer I know. Time is something I don't have a lot of that is spare these days, so setting up a company or a distribution company would take quite a lot of time, dealing with orders etc etc you would require a team of people and they would need to be based somewhere like a warehouse or similar.

How many would you get made? This is a difficult one to answer, mainly because you would be at the behest of suppliers and their unit quantities of supply. Let's just take the ring mechanisms as a prime example.

A Philofaxy organiser would have to have Krause rings, nothing less would do? I can see you nodding your heads in agreement around our virtual board room table!

Krause will only supply rings in units of 1000 ring mechanisms. If we are going to sell organisers in A5, Personal, Pocket, then that would be 3000 sets of rings. They will not let you mix an order of a 1000 rings in different ring spacings or ring diameters. If you only sold A5 organisers but you wanted to offer 20 or 25mm and say 30 mm, that would be a 1000 or each ring diameter

If that is the case, then how do other sellers seem to sell much less than 1000 units. They buy from a whole seller not direct from Krause, but of course the price will be higher.

That is just one part of the puzzle. Who is going to make these organisers? Well there is no shortage of leather workshops around the world or in Europe, USA etc. However, unless you are keeping them fully occupied with your orders, they are going to be working for other companies as well as ours.

Making sure that the quality of the products is maintained will require a lot of careful monitoring, it might require frequent site visits to the workshop to ensure that the workers are cutting corners to save their own company time and money.

Assuming all these issues can be overcome and there are several I'm sure I've not mentioned.... there is then the sale of these organisers.

We have a very well established web presence... almost 20 years in fact.. but as soon as we start commercial operations, I'm sure the other similar sounding company that starts with an F instead of PH will be on to us with a cease and desist letter from their lawyers with a very fancy three or four name title!! Especially if we used our 'Philofax' branded website... yes I registered philofax.co.uk a few years ago! See this previous post as to why that exists! At present it loops back to the blog!

Setting up a whole new workshop with equipment and staff to make organisers like say Van der Spek would be a dream or nightmare depending on how you look at it!

Or the alternative of just getting them made by another company with our name on the items and we would just be sales and distribution like Gillio, also would be quite an expense.

To do it profitably requires quite a large holding of items, therefore large warehouse and staff to process orders. Also the makers have their profit margin and we would be adding our own profit margin on top of that to cover all the running costs which would add about 40-50% on the price of the basic item.

No, I don't have a warehouse.... only a large garage! It's already fairly full!

I think by now you can see why this is never going to happen.... well not with me in charge!

Free For All Friday No 775 by Laurie

Some people like their Filofax to be neat. All the page edges line up, their dividers are pretty, and their handwriting is tidy.

My Filofax is a mess. I add whatever pages I like, and they don't always align perfectly. My page corners aren't rounded. My handwriting is atrocious. I have things messily taped to my tabbed dividers.

I like it that way.

I don't feel any pressure to make my Filofax tidy, or pretty. It holds things I love, and it works for me. That's what's important to me.

However I do understand when people like their planner to look tidy and/ or pretty. It is calming to have an organised-looking planner.

Do you like your planner to be neat and tidy? Or do you not mind it a little messy, like me?

As always on Fridays, feel free to ask and/or discuss anything Filofax related!

However, this week Gillio announced that they are holding a Meet Up in Brussels on Saturday 11 November 2023.

It's a ticket only event, but the tickets are free.

I will be there, along with the other Gillio Group Admins (Christina, Susan and Mella)

You can find out all the details on the Gillio website and there is a link there to book yourself a ticket. Don't wait too long though as the tickets are going quickly.
