Design Your Own Organiser.... How difficult can it be?

Late one night last week I came across a discussion on the Van der Spek Facebook group. One of the members was asking if 30mm rings existed for the Van der Spek Senior range. They are available with 20 or 25 mm rings at the moment.

People started talking about running polls to see what the demand would be etc. I checked the Krause catalogue on line and they show that the 25mm size is the largest they currently make in that ring spacing.  So that was the end of that discussion.... well not quite!

Petra Van der Spek and the team at Van der Spek do an exceptional job of satisfying most peoples requests for super custom designs. Almost nothing is impossible, the word 'No' is never used.

There are some ground rules though. Firstly you must accept that the rings for your special custom organiser must be available and they have to have them in stock. And secondly you have to realise that departing massively from the existing designs is going to cost more, how much more will depend on the design and the extent of the leather work involved.

So having told people the ground rules our discussion continued. If you wanted a larger capacity organiser than an A6 with 25mm rings, you could just use two of them? Simple solution.

I suggested going for a duplex design, something people aren't that familiar with because Filofax stopped making them many years ago. But is there any alternatives to the previous duplex design?

Essentially a duplex is an organiser with two ring mechanisms so say two 20mm giving you 40mm overall capacity, or may be a 25 mm and a 20 mm in the same organiser etc. Sticking to the sizes available. But how to arrange the two ring mechanisms?

So I grabbed a sheet of paper and a pencil and I started sketching some very rough outline designs of what various ideas might look like.

This is what I came up with:

I then looked at each design in detail.

So it looks fine closed, but when you open it as in the drawing below I straight away realised a flaw with this design. The pages look fine on 'each side' but when they overlap with each other, imagine trying to write on the page that is over the other set of rings.

So that design was put to one side...

So the next design is more or less the same as Filofax Duplex with an overlapping cover and the ring mechanisms at each side so that the pages don't overlap when closed.

Then when you open the duplex you can see four pages all at once. Within the cover you could have pen loops and credit card slots etc. The way in which the contents can be turned independently of each other it means you can have your diary viewable at the same time as say a set of note pages or task/project pages.

So continuing on to the next design.

This seemed an obvious solution of combining two organisers but....

Again they don't work when you try to open the organiser, nothing would lay flat and it would be a nightmare to use.

And finally this one... which actually already exists owned by Janet Carr made by Mulberry

I always think of this one as a 'Push me Pull You' type design!  It's effectively a back to back design.

But I wonder when you are using this design what happens when only one side is open, again we have a potential issue with being able to write on the open side as it would be unsupported. But it is a novel design and credit to who ever thought it up originally.

So out of the four ideas I came up with only one is a really practical solution, although I'm sure there are other ways of using two ring mechanisms in an organiser that I've not thought of yet.

[Update] I've got permission to include this picture as well from Julie J on the Facebook group, it extension on some of the ideas above and shows how to make a compact duplex that as far as I can see would work.

[Update 2] Thank you to Gmax for the photo of the Duplex he owns which is in line with the comment he made earlier. Notice the press studs in the covers to hold the two halves together when 'folded'

Have you ever thought about designing your own organiser, even one with just a single ring mechanism?

Paper for my A6 organiser

I'm enjoying using my A6 organisers, the size feels more natural to me.

I have been able to get an ample supply of plain A6 from our friends 'The Stationery Emporium' in Scotland at a very reasonable price. I have used this plain paper for printing various inserts such as my diary inserts and other 'essentials'

However, I'm always on the look out for other things that will work with A6 size that is available locally, ideally in my local stationery shop or supermarket. I think the staff have got used to me going around with a small ruler measuring various notebooks and other paper items for size!

Rhodia pads are very commonly available here in France, they come in a variety of size and formats (plain, lined, quadrille). The paper is excellent quality too (80gsm - 21.3 lb) Their 'Bloc' note pads are simple and inexpensive. They have a stapled header and a stiff card backing, the pages are perforated for easy removal.

Looking at the on-line catalogue I noticed that the Bloc Rhodia No. 13 is A6 sized, but unfortunately when you tear out a page the resultant page is shorter than A6, but the correct width.

So back to the catalogue... the Rhodia No. 14 is labelled as 'A6+' so I purchased one for the princely sum of €1.09 for an 80 sheet pad. It is labelled as 11,0 x 17,0 cm (110x170mm) and A6 is 105 x148 mm.

As you can see when a page is torn out the resulting 'page' is in fact the same height as A6 and only fractionally wider than A6, if the extra 5mm bothered you it wouldn't be difficult to trim the page or the pad down in width.

However, given that my notes on this sort of pad/paper would likely be not in my organiser for very long, I would most probably use it as it is and not go to the trouble of trimming it.

The lined pads aren't available locally, and on-line stores in France seem to only want to sell them in packs of 10 pads! So I want to try this quadrille one out first before I order a stack of 10 pads.

Readers Favourite Organiser - Maria

Thank you to Maria for sharing with us her favourite organiser.

1. What is your favorite organizer (Make/model/size)?

My favorite organizer would be the Malden Personal size from Filofax. But I also love the Gillio Medium Compagna. I am always back and forward with both these models. I have a love/hate relation with them. At one point I want the Malden, and then I want the Compagna.

2. How long have you owned it?

I own the Malden since 2012. And the Compagna I think since 2014.

3. What is it that you like about it so much?

I love the layout of the Malden. All those pockets in the front! And I love the back pocket, where you can add a notepad or your phone or extra papers. The possibilities are endless. And behind the back pocket there is an additional pocket, where you can put more things. The Malden is a workhorse. Without putting a lot of strength on the rings, you can put a lot of things in the planner.

Because of all the pockets, the Malden can be a used as a planner/wallet combo. I miss, thou, the full back pocket for receipts or paper money. And that is where the Compagna comes in the pictures.

I love the back pocket and the better zipped pocket for cash money or paper clips or whatever small thing you want to put in a zipped pocket.

As I use my planner both as planner and wallet I am always struggling with both planners.

One more detail of the Malden that I like is the contrast stitching on the Malden. The white and the purple is such a beautiful combination.

4. Do you use it all the time?

My planner is used ALL THE TIME! As I use it also as wallet, I have it with me all the time. I use the planner for scheduling, as a wallet, notebook, brain dump, address book, financial book. You name it and it is in my planner. I like to use one book for everything. I do not like to use different books for the same. My brain gets confuse and I miss appointments, lose notes. And that is just the reason why I wanted a planner: on place to put all my appointments, notes, etc. in.

5. Do you think the design could be improved in any way? How?

Someone mention it, I do not recall who that was: the Malden and the Compagna should get together and have a love baby. I think the Malden is a very good planner, but it would be perfectr with the zipped pocket and the full length pocket of the Compagna. And please make the Malden lay flat immediately from the box. That would be my ultimate planner.

And here are some photos of my favourite organiser.

Thank you Maria.
