Free for All Friday No. 217

When you use a week-per-2-pages or even a 2-days-per-page Filofax diary, it can be striking how "thin" one year is. So much happens in a year, and yet a year can be contained on so few pages.

Often, at the beginning of a year, I don't know what the upcoming year will bring. It's an exciting unknown. But when it comes to 2013, I find that I already know about a few upcoming milestones...knowing in advance that a close friend will move away...a medical situation that will need to be handled.

So I find that have a greater chance to anticipate what will happen and when, and use my Filo to help prepare for these hurdles.

    Steve, I have a little problem printing memo pdg file from Personal Pages using Pre-punched A4 Filofax Computer Paper (all in pdf format). The pages does not aligned properly on both sides.
    I actually tried to redo the page so I can print just three lined pages on A4 paper.And no luck again with alignment.
    Could you please fix it?

      Can you please measure the width of each of the 3 pages on your A4 computer paper sheet. Are they 95mm in width, please check each one and report back.

      Also we might need to see a scan of the printed page before you separate them to see where the mis-alignment is.

      Additionally make sure you have turned off auto-scaling on your printer settings. These files should be printed at 100%

      I measured - they arte 78 mm in width. Sorry, I didn't know about 100% printing. The height is 155 mm. I actually could use this, because of the spacing between sheets. The misalignment is for about 3 mm, which is nothing serious. My fault.
      But I had no luck with redoing them. Really what I want is three lined clear sheet on A4 paper on both sides. Maybe you could remake it, so everybody could use it, please? I just hate waisting all those A4 paper!

      Is this Personal size or Pocket size? Pocket is 81 x 120 mm, Personal is 95 x 171 mm, 155 is somewhere in between!?

    Also I have questions for AVERY TABS owners.

    Are they suppose to be for one-time use or multiple uses? Do they have any paper left when you try to reposition them on another sheet of paper?

    Could you also write on them? If you wrote on them with Frixion pen,could you erase it without anything left?

      I have the Martha Stewart ones. And they seem to unstick cleanly, I haven't tried reusing so I don't know how strong they are when re-stuck though. They don't stick to shiny pages (I have paperchase stickers tabbed and the tab slips) but they do stick to acetate.

      I have written on mine in a ball point pen as when I tried gel based ink it smudged, not sure about frixion pens.

      I use Avery Tabs all the time and re-position them without any problems. I also write on them with pencil and erasing is not a problem, so frixion shouldn't be either.

      I also went through my 2012 planner to see what went on in 2012. With the help of Leonie Dawson year planner 2013 I am going to make a review and close 2012. This is the first time that I will do it like that.

    Funny you should ask, Nan; I spent a bit of time last night noting down some of this year's bigger events in my Filo, using my Filofax stickers to draw attention to them. Some examples included a friend's birthday/engagement party, the university year starting, and graduation.

      I too write down important events as they happen. There are the obvious ones, since those are actually appointments and would get written down anyway. But then there are the not-so-obvious ones -- just the other day my sister had to have her cat put to sleep, and while I liked the cat and was sad for the family, it wasn't a significant event in my personal life. However, the event was written down in my planner anyway because it was note-worthy to me as an event or something to remember. So when I look back on 2013 this time next year, I can remember all of the "little things" that meant something. Of course this is a fairly small thing in that no lists or details were needed, so just the event was written on the day it happened. Something more substantial, like a big health concern (which I was dealing with at this time last year) calls for more detailed planning and note-taking, all of which were kept in my planner until it was complete and taken care of. No matter the size or level of detail, if its something significant to me or my family, it gets noted in the planner in some way.

    The way I use the horizontal year is for a review not a planner. I jot doctors visits, trips. and important events on it so I will have a quick and easy record of the year. I even record fillips, haircuts, and grocery
    trips.

    I do use my planner to prepare for upcoming events in our lives. I take a sheet of paper, write the event, the date and then start brain dumping. Anytime something hits my brain I then write it down. If its a holiday, someone's birthday party or graduation-- then set with the person/family and ask them what they want. We have had some very memorable occasions because it was thought out ahead of time.
    It's better to make yourself a plan then fly by the seat of your pants and take what comes.

    I loved Lime Tree's post earlier this week on how to print inserts. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best kind of paper to use to make inserts? I want something that is preferably fountain-pen- friendly - or at least makes a smooth writing experience. I'm in the US. Any suggestions?

      I like Rhodia paper...

      The other important thing related to this topic is the ink you use in your pens. Different inks will have a different impact on the paper in terms of ink bleed-through.

      I'm also a Rhodia paper user. LOVE it! I mainly use the dot pad paper. So lovely to write upon.

      Thanks Mark for the links! I will read them soon. I am a long-time Rhodia/Clairefontaine user. I have stacks of the dot notepads, webnotebooks, etc. I keep a dot pad slotted in the back of my A5.

      Maybe this is covered in the links you sent, but does Rhodia paper come blank, in a format you can print on? Think I better go check out those links now!

      I use the Rhodia Webnotebook with lined paper, so, it's bound and looks similar to a Moleskine journal....great with my pens...

    Does anyone have or can point me to some pics of a Malden after it's been used for some time...would be interested to see how it looks....preferably the Ochre color if possible...but others too...

    Would be interesting to see pics of some of the other leathers after they've been used for some months too...

      Great post about your Malden and how you use it....

      The pics are very helpful...like you don't mind that the leather gets a bit creased or shows some age.

      Does the sheen on the Malden leather dull down over time?

      In case there isn't a friend like Doris ready to show her pics, I have two other suggestions, that I use, as I am not that familiar with the different models, particularly the discontinued one:
      1. Check eBay for Filofax and click on "auctions only" so that many of the items offered are used.
      2. I've had wonderful success using google and clicking on "images" to see what specific models look like.

      From what I saw, the Ochre Malden looks beautiful with a bit of waer, use and love.
