People often highlight they have seen a Filofax in a film or on a TV show and sometimes we then try to identify which particular model it is. Not always easy!
However, apart from 'Taking Care of Business' and '27 Dresses' what other films have featured a Filofax organiser? And have you seen any on TV?
Okay... Can anyone identify the organizer used by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) in about the first half hour of Die Hard?
ReplyDelete(yes, the 1986 film that threatened to blow viewers out the back of the theater, according to Dolby)
Ahahaha, I recently watched the whole Die Hard series, with my boyfriend who had never seen one of the movies, and I realized I had never noticed the organizer at the beginning of the movies, though I have seen it *several* times !
DeleteFunny how your attention shifts once you have new interests, you always discover new things in "oldies"!
I know this is a REALLY old comment, but I just happened on it browsing around.
DeleteIn the movie, Hans Gruber uses a Bottega Venata pocket notebook.
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen did a movie a few years back called New York Minute and Ashley's character depended on her day planner (they didn't call it a Filofax). I am often referred to by my friends as this character!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have been an avid reader of Philofaxy, just never posted anything before until now. So, hello to all!
DeleteThe planner used in New York Minute was a Classic size Franklin Covey.
DeleteThe Lake House -- Sandra Bullock had a ring-bound binder standing in front of her mailbox. Sliding Doors -- Gwyneth Paltrow was flipping through her Filofax diary in her new office. To name a few.
ReplyDeleteWorking Girl -- Melanie Griffith carried around a ring-bound planner. Not sure if it's FF-brand though.
DeleteI'm pretty sure Melanie's 'notebook', as Sigourney Weaver calls it in the film, is NOT a Filofax product; it's plastic with a Velcro closure, and the inserts aren't Filofax inserts, either. A Franklin or Day Runner organiser, maybe?
DeleteI've posted these on here before, but in Home Alone when the mom is calling from the airport in France she says, "Here's my address book, call everyone in it" and hands her Filofax to her sister in law.
ReplyDeleteIn one of the episodes of Nashville, Juliette's publicist has a crimson Malden on the table in front of her.
I had forgotten the Filofax in Sliding Doors! That's a good one.
In the last series of 'The Thick of It', which is a TV satire on the British Government (a bit like Yes Minister, but a LOT more sweary!), the character Terri uses an A4 red Domino. And yes, I did squeak when I spotted it!
ReplyDeleteThey use a binder of some description in 'Supernatural'. Actually I'm sure they use a few different ones. I haven't paused to find out details though as I watch it with my husband who doesn't share my love for paper products. He thinks if it doesn't need charging then it is a waste of time.
ReplyDeleteIt's a three ring binder, chock full of grid paper. I can never quite decide if it's personal sized, A5 sized, or somewhere in the middle. I want one. (somewhat rabid Supernatural fan here)

ReplyDeleteIn "The Newsrrom" - the new series by Aaron Sorkin - the producer Mackenzie Mchale uses an A4 FF constantly. Can't quite seem to spot which model, but it looks like a FF.
ReplyDeleteAlso in the Danish TV-show "Borgen" (The castle which is the nickname of the parlament in Denmark) the fictional primeminister uses an A4 Classic black FF.
Regards,
Thomas
I believe there was a red Filofax featured in P.S. I Love You (only in one scene). I find references to Filofaxes in books more often than movies or tv shows.
ReplyDeleteI saw several (filofax and other planners) in Korean drama "When a man loves"
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Fabulous! I recall a scene where Edina picks up a filofax and tells Bubbles to call everyone. Will have to review to see which episode and get the exact quote.
ReplyDeleteEddi with a Filofax? Now that I have to see!
DeleteIn "Only Fools And Horses", Del Boy had a black filofax in the episode "Yuppy Love". He'd seen "Wall Street" and wanted to be just like Gordon Gecko! (It was repeated on TV recently.)
ReplyDeleteCharacters on Frankie are district nurses and use Filofaxes. Frankie has a black Filofax of some sort and even uses Filofax note paper to put up a note on her windscreen. Paula has a blue Metropol.
ReplyDeleteThe Doctor Who companion clara has a Filofax open on her desk in her first episode.
Joan Watson from Elementary has a binder of some sort which falls out of her bag.
I once briefly appeared in a news program about local planning issues, whilst clutching my A4 Lindurst. Does that count? :-)
ReplyDeleteDoctor Who filofax! Now you're talking :D
ReplyDeleteIn the pilot of the tv series "Elementary" (Sherlock Holmes, set in modern-day NYC, with Lucy Liu as *Joan* Watson), Joan Watson drops her bag on the floor.
ReplyDeleteWe briefly see the content and, including what appears to be a ring-bound organizer, but couldn't see exactly what it was as she puts everything back quickly. Never reappeared in the following episodes, though.
And yes, I paused, rewinded, and replayed these few seconds at least three times to make sure :)
In "The Hand that rocks the Cradle", Julianne Moore's character (a real estate agent) uses of course an organizer. From my guess, I would say, it was an A5 Malden in ochre or something very similar.
ReplyDeleteThat movie is from 1992. I don't think the Malden in ochre was out then, was it?
DeleteOn 30 Rock, Liz had a ring bound planner, classic size, but I never could figure out what kind. And on Parks & Recreation, Leslie has a smaller ring bound planner but I couldn't figure out what kind it was either.
ReplyDeleteIn the new movie directed by Woody Allen, Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett has a Filofax - according to fellow PlannerChick Trish! "Go see Blue Jasmine and ck out the filofax cate b is carrying around and how fabulous it looks. Love it." She says it's "stuffed"!
ReplyDeleteIn the movie Remember Me with R Patz he uses a beat up ring bound planner throughout the movie as his diary. It is always with him. It has string ties that wrap around it and he often rolls the binder up that's how flexible it. Have no idea the brand...tried researching it once but only found some photos and that it had sold for $5,000 as a movie prop.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed a planner on the side in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, & one of the characters picks it up as it's by the phone.
ReplyDeleteIn Alias, the main character Sydney Bristow carries a filofax of some sort in her bag for school.

ReplyDeleteI just saw a leather A5 planner on the tv show Covert Affairs, Season 2 Episode 2. The new asset has a red leather planner!
ReplyDeleteIn "The Lost Valentine" Jennifer Love Hewitt carries a planner around. Not sure what it is though.

ReplyDeleteI remember the movie The Sure Thing with John Cusak. The female lead character uses a Filofax (or similar binder) and loses it. I was in high school when I saw the movie, waaaaay before my Filofax days, and I specifically remember wondering why anyone would need anything as complicated as a binder system for a planner! How how little I knew then!
ReplyDeleteI watched a movie called Cake with Heather Graham last night and the dad had some kind of filofax, don't know what brand but it was a personal size.
ReplyDeleteIn the 1991 movie "A Kiss before Dying" with Matt Dillon and Sean Young at 45:15 sec you can see Matt Dillon going thru a Personal Wellington Red Filofax from the 1988 Filofax Catalog at the fictional Hobart hotel looking for evidence ! By the way underrated good movie watch it if you can find it !
ReplyDeleteIn the ghost movie (1990), the scene in which Carl flipped opened his Filofax to retrieve sam”s Mac code. Amazing scene.
ReplyDeleteA decade later: in the original “Beverly Hills, 90210,” the characters Kelly and Valerie give one another identical black ring-bound “journals” for Christmas in season 7, episode 13. One character reading another’s journal becomes a major plot point. It is difficult to find photographs of the journals (unwrapped) online, but here is one image, in which the rings are visible: https://i.redd.it/lqqcuto3yk2c1.jpg
