Free For All Friday No. 256

I don't use a Filofax as my planner anymore, but I have to admit one thing I do miss about it is far-future planning. I used to have a page per year for the next 15 years. You're thinking, why in the world?? Well, that's when we lived in countries that required us to get numerous vaccines for rabies, typhoid, on and on. And depending on each family member's age at vaccination and when they received it, we all needed boosters at different times. So I wrote in for the next 15 years when each of us needed boosters. And passport renewals. And visa renewals. And driver's license renewals. Etc. It was a lot to keep up on, and I couldn't afford for anything to lapse, so I kept all this information handy in my Filo so there were no surprises and I could keep it constantly updated.

Of course here in Scotland we don't have things like that to keep up with now, so it's a non-issue. But it sure was handy to be able to write far-future things in my everyday book.

Do you do any far-future planning in your Filofax?

And as always in Fridays, feel free to discuss anything Filofax-related.

  1. Being a mom, I ABSOLUTELY "far-future" plan. I have a high school junior who is gearing up for college AND is in marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, pep band and a local university honors band... and to top that off... he's heading to Europe next summer with the Iowa Ambassadors of Music, touring 13 countries in 3 weeks!! You BET I "far-future" plan!! Oy! Needless to say... when school ended in June of this year... the Band Directors READILY handed out the schedule for THIS school year's band functions... all THREE 8 1/2 X 11 pieces of it!! Our high school is the largest in the state and houses over 4,000 students. There's a LOT that goes on and adding pre-college requirement agendas definitely needs a LOT of planning! But.. I wouldn't miss it for the world! ;-)

  2. I go the other way; I have an older filofax that I archive useful notes and pages in. There are pages going about 5 years back now. Sometimes it is useful to go back and see what I was interested in, what I thought was important, etc. Some of those pages remind me of things I wanted to do but never got around to. For example, my father-in-law and I have been meaning to build a mantel clock from a kit together... must order that thing some time soon... thankfully the name of the mail-order company and the model number are written down.

    1. Clark... I keep my old pages too. Kind of like a journal at that point. I have all the ones from doctor appts. and such when I was pregnant with my son. I like looking back at things I did in the past. :-)

  3. Morning All! I was looking at the Day Timer inserts for my personal Filo. I see that they have tabbed months. I checked the Philofaxy FAQs which helpfully told me that the portable size is the same as the personal size, but does anyone know if the tab stick out a lot in a personal sized filo?
    Thanks!

    1. No they don't stick out. I have used the Day Timer inserts in mine.

    3. The paper is no better than Filofax, I use pencil, but if you use fountain pens or some gel pens, you won't be happy.

    4. Hi there. I bought a black Filofax Fusion in personal size last week, and bought a Daytimer refill because of the monthly tabbed dividers. I also bought some blank Filofax tabs so I could set them up the way I want. I love my Fusion Filofax because I can slide my iphone in the left side pocket, my business cards in one of the front pockets, a notepad in the back right side, and receipts when I am shopping in the back pocket. It fits right in my purse. I may go back to Pen Boutique and get an A5 Black Filofax Fusion for home. They have a website, plus stores in Bethesda an Columbia MD. The store had a shelf of Filofaxes at 40% off and some at 20% off.

  4. I have always wanted to keep a planner with five years ahead but thought I was a bit quirky and alone for wanting to do that. When I have mentioned it to people I have gotten some strange looks. I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one that feels the need/want to sketch out what I know is coming and get it organized early. Thank you for this post, it made my day. :-)

    1. This post made my day, too. I spent the past two weeks writing down every task I have half finished or not started in my personal and business life. Then I wrote down all my dreams and goals and started mapping out a plan for the next year, 3 years, 5 years and ten years. Maybe Steve can invent some blank year at a glance goal/task calendar inserts for us in Personal and A5 size? How about it Steve?

    2. Yes! A good idea to have them.

  5. My far-future planning extends only to the next few months! I just don't have enough to plan that far ahead right now!

  6. In 2016, I have to renew my driver's license. I just checked my planner's "Future Planning" page, and that is the furthest date noted.

    Does that count? :)

  7. Facebook groups have been mentioned and I don't have one. As a professional woman in the executive level they are frowned upon in the social and professional circles I work in. I did have one at one time, but found it to be a bit gossipy for my taste. However, it disappoints me to be missing out on what obviously seems to be interesting discussions regarding topics of interest to me. Seems to be a no win situation, I don't like Facebook but portions do interest me. LinkedIn is a great alternative but I keep my professional career far removed from my blogging and writing career, making that a nonoption, too. What a conundrum I face. LoL I appreciate this site for the discussion and question answering, so thank you for offering this as an option to share ideas, questions, and answers.

    1. Cissy, you could do as I do and make a private Facebook page and don't engage in your regular news fees. Use it strictly to access the groups you have interest in. With the groups being a closed group, no one that outside of the group can see anything you post or comment on within the group.

  8. I have been experimenting with my diary pages in my Compact Luxe in ebony. I have seven months of a week on two pages insert and a full year of the 2014 Franklin Covey Original month on two pages insert in my binder. I also have four months of the 2013 Filofax Mo2P insert in it. I trimmed and hole punched the FC Mo2P pages and thought that the tabs would extend beyond the 4.75 inches in width of the binder. It was fine though. The FC hole punch is very good. I have the six subject dividers with the brown font in it and will be able to put a few pages behind each one. I decided to remove my daily pages because of the limited space. I also removed the Filofax diary stickers, trimmed them, and placed them in a Dayrunner pocket folder. I thought about buying a bound Day on a page planner and carrying it with my Luxe but I am not sure if I need it. The Compact Luxe is a very nice looking binder. I particularly like the finish and pattern on the leather. I bought my Personal Pimlico about eight years ago and it was time do buy a new Filofax. On a different note, I like the change in color on this website.

  9. No future planning here. I'd be happy if I could just plan next week!

I, too, like the color change on the website.

  10. Only future planning I do are work appointments that are usually not more than 9 or 10 months away and family dentist appointments 2 times a year. I'm bewildered that you need to keep track of renewal dates of your license and passports, and for your vaccination scheme? We get a letter from the appropriate institution or bureau months beforehand. Plenty of time to make an appointment then.

    1. Jotje I did that when we lived in Indonesia, Albania etc. We didn't receive any notices, keeping track of our healthcare was all up to us. And if our passports or visas lapsed, it would have been a big problem.

    2. Ah okay, that totally makes sense then!! Good thing, our governments take such good care of us over here (USA not included .... ;) )

  11. Happy Friday Everyone!

I want to thank all those who created and maintain this site, as well as everyone who posts on it. I studied this sight for months before I went on a Filofax shopping binge.

I got a black Chameleon pocket size which is now my wallet. Using this little beauty helped me clear out my wallet, change purse, passport holder and address book (yes I still had one in my purse!) I added address pages, financial pages, and blank notes for shopping. Before I go to bed I log everything in YNAB (You need a budget) to track my spending. Now I am saving money and spending wisely.

I also bought a black Piazza pocket that was on sale at a third of the price. This is my personal chapbook that helps me write down any and everything that comes to mind but I cannot get to it right away. I mostly keep blank paper in here for notes, and a filofax calendar with monthly pages and three months weekly pages at a time.

I bought a black personal Fusion which I love and described how I use it in another reply. In it I have five dividers devoted to everything on the job, so I can just flip to a divider when I am in meetings or on a call for critical info that never changes, and to take notes for meeting minutes and action items.

And I bought a black Bond A5 which I am going to make my home archive for health and fitness, recipes, medical, dental, etc.

I got all black because that is my favorite color and it looks so classy. The best part is I got everything on sale at great prices, and got Filofax inserts (from Pen Boutique and Farhney's Pens in Washington, DC) as well as Daytimer refills for my personal Fusion in Staples.

I am not going to trick my Filofaxes out like a scrapbook or smashbook - even though on Pineterest I have a board called Fantastic Filofax which shows how many people decorate theirs. (It also has lots of videos and lovely pictures of the actual Filofax organizers.)

I can honestly say, thanks to all of you on this site, I am actually organizing my life and taking baby steps toward achieving my dreams. So please, keep posting on here. Everything I read inspires me to do more.

  12. Dear Filopeople: I have several black plastic Franklin Covey dashboards...they are warping with age. Does anyone know a way to flatten them out? I placed them in a stack and put a rather heavy wight on top, leaving it like that for a while, but it doesn't seem to have helped any. What to do?

    1. They are more likely to bend if you warm them first. Try a dry-blower. Then put the warm sheets under a heavy weight and let them cool off!

    2. The sort of thing we did with our vinyl LP's all those years ago that we had left in the car in the summer heat... For those of you that can remember LP's.... !

    3. I still have some old LP's and some 45's. I might even have some audio cassettes laying around somewhere. lol

  13. Forward and backward! Yes, I forward plan because it is up to me to keep track of when homeschool papers, land papers, licensing, etc. I have stuff out to 2017 and all my Franklin pages back to 1994. In fact my son and I had an argument, I won because I wrote it down in my planner and could prove my answer. It's great when you can pull a year off the shelf and have it all at your finger tips--it's easier than the yellow pages!
