I don't quite understand the multiple planner phenomenon. If you have multiple planners , how do you use them? Do your replicate a daily, weekly, or monthly spread in multiple places? This doesn't make sense to me so there must be another purpose - I would love to know how and why people are using multiple planners, because I love so many of the Filofax I want to use more :) Also, maybe you don't use multiple planners but you have many of the same size and swap out the colors for seasons or something?
Hi! In my experience, I've seen people using multiple planners for different purposes, e.g. one for work (day time planner) and another for home/personal (mornings, evenings, weekends) when people don't want to mix the two. I've also seen a main planner which is maybe too big to carry out of the house, and a smaller planner e.g. a pocket-sized binder with a simplified insert e.g. month on 2 pages, as a satellite planner.
I have a ringed planner for my everyday life and a notebook/bullet journal for work. Both are completely separate nor do they 'cross the streams'! My planner comes with me everywhere, yet my work journal stays on my desk - period. I don't personal tasks, appointments, etc. into my work journal nor do I put work stuff in my planner. Neither of them intersect so I don't have to worry about putting a 9am conference call in my work journal without checking my personal planner. I wouldn't be scheduling anything personal for 9am anyway because I'm at work from 8-4
The one thing I do wonder is how people juggle multiple planners where there is crossover. Example: If someone has their own business and/or works from home, if they keep a separate planner for their business, how do they schedule work that doesn't conflict with anything in their personal planner? If they need to schedule, say, a new client meeting at 2pm would they first check their personal planner to make sure they don't have a doctor's appointment or have to pick up the kids at 2:30?
Personally, I would find it detrimental juggling two planners - but that's me! :)
I use a planner and a separate notebook, but I don't do any planning in the notebook. The only time using two planners at once worked for me was when I worked in a corporate office and had to use Outlook. I used my Filofax for personal-only stuff. This worked because work and personal were completely separate, except for the rare instance when I had to schedule a doctor or dentist appointment during work hours. So I didn't have to worry about keeping them synchronized. It's possible to use two separate planners, as long as you synchronize them all the time.
Now I work from home and there's no way I could have separate planners for work and personal, because I have both mixed into my schedule every day. I do keep separate notebooks for work vs personal though, so I don't have to wade through my personal stuff to find work and meeting notes, and for documentation purposes for work.
I use one planner for work, home, side business stuff. But just set up a holiday/gift planner to keep all my notes in one place. There wasn't room in my everyday planner for that. I also have a notebook that is paired with my planner, but no planning is done in it either.
In my case, I have different purposes for different planners. My A5 is for tracking certain uni events and deadlines/exams, and my personal is my view of what is happening today - without the deadlines. I check the week view every morning before leaving, and every afternoon/evening as soon as I get home to make sure I'm on top of my to do's, and if I plan on working on any of the deadlines during my time out of the house (i.e. between classes), I take the little "to do" sheet which is M2 sized from the A5 and pop it in the personal so I can see what needs to be done :)
I use one for a wallet. It has a calendar that I update weekly, a shopping list and check register. I have one that is my main calendar, monthly and daily. My to do list. My third one had my food/exercise journal, cleaning schedule, Etsy store info, etc.
I have only used one planner at a time because work and my personal life often intersect. For example, I do client visits (my clients are foster care youth) at least two Saturdays a month, and have church music activities on week nights. I back up my calendar in the cloud and it syncs to my cellphone and computer, always good when I am without my planner or in the event-Heaven forfend-that my planner is lost. I would only use another paper planner as part of a backup system, but your needs may be different.
As already told by others before me, if you have more than one gorgeous planner and love them all equally, you don't want to let any of them sit on the shelves...so recently I've started new project,to divide sections of my life in favor of convenience and transportbility!I use my new pocket malden (which I absolutely felt in love with, although I was never fan of the pocket ones) as a,....everyday - everywhere ..planner ...and it contains my planner, weekly and one month dailies, checklists, buying lists (which I need when I'm out of home) and information relevant to work and life such as passwords etc...It's very convenient to have always with me,due to its size and I have come to appreciate it a lot, because I was always a personal size fan but sometimes ended up too bulky to carry with me...A malden in personal size is used only for projects and sections of my life as work and same other activities,it is not a calendar, only a subject divided planner and I take it with me only at work and if ..anywhere else is needed..The last week I started setting up a Kikki k black medium sized for home projects and maintenance and cleaning, and for tracking some regular based expenses and set aside money....it is only for home used and don't need to carry with me all this kind of info and weight....Now I'm wondering how am I going to use a A5 Kikki k planner in perfect mint color because it is so fancy to use and beautiful enough ...total waste to stay at home...maybe I 'll start it as a study planner.... ;)
Thanks for sharing everyone! @ion ts...it seems to be that the planners are more and more like notebooks and less like calendar planners right? I just thought of that as you mentioned a study planner...is this intended to plan your studying or notes from your studying. Curious minds want to know ;)
..I do keep calendar inside my planners. In the pocket malden which is my private planner and I have it everywhere and all the time with me,I keep week on 2pages and it is only for my personal life and inside my personal sized malden which is mainly subject divided I also keep a day in one page to keep track of work matters...sorry If I wasn't clear about that and sorry for the delay of my response..I also am curious on other people's planners.....! :)
I use the "Don't Break the Chain" method where you use a calendar and make an x thru each day. The goal being that you don't break your chain of x's by missing a day. Instead of a calendar I use the DIYFish Monthly Tracker to mark my x. It actually has worked for me. I added a routine over the summer and now it is in place and I do it without thinking. But I did have a few false starts where I missed a day here & there. But once the x chains started getting longer, I really wanted to make sure I didn't miss a day. The other thing was I started out trying to add too many new routines at once. I think it works better (for me) If I just try to add one new routine at a time.
Tps is right. I have a work one (which is on my desk and contains everything work related) and a personal one that stays with me and contains everything not related to work. The work one rarely comes home with me
Heylo Philofaxy, I've got a quick question for you - does anyone have a personal-sized vertical layout they can recommend? Or a horizontal layout similar to Dodopad/Organised Mum? As near as I can do, Organised Mum aren't doing Filofax inserts anymore, and Dodo Pad personal inserts look like they have no space. I'm tempted by vertical layouts, but... They're hard to find in personal size. (DIYFish have some that look great, but if I'm spending £20 on inserts I want them to come pre-printed.)
I'm not sure that the blogs lose value. I would recommend keeping them in the links. I find useful tips and interesting reads in many an inactive blog.
I believe it depends a lot on the type of work...I use mine on daily basis so I depend a lot on the dailies refills and on a side checklist where I put all of the current and unfinished projects to keep up. Also, I have a second divider where I write down all the related info, to have them in one place, so I won't have to search back the dailies to check where I left the info taken. So far, it works fine for about 2 months that I use this set up, and as long as I check it regularly and really use the planner (haha!) I stay always sinched and up to my duties!!!

ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have any recommendations?
Franklin Covey has a personal size WO2P vertical options. One set is called Blooms. Very pretty, but too small for my large hand writing.
DeleteI have some absolutely gorgeous (very minimalist but lovely paper) inserts from Japan. The brand is Knoxbrain, style 521-004.
DeleteAny chance of cleaning up the Links section? Some of the blogs have been discontinued for 4 years.
ReplyDeleteSure what would you set the cut off for inclusion? Time wise since the last post?
DeleteI would say a year. That's plenty of time if you needed a break but were planning to continue
DeleteI'm not sure that the blogs lose value. I would recommend keeping them in the links. I find useful tips and interesting reads in many an inactive blog.
DeleteI agree with Josh, there are some old posts around which are extremely useful
DeleteI will only remove blogs from the list that are no longer available at all. It might take some time to do but it will be on my list of things to do
DeleteGreat work, Steve. Thank you so much for all your great efforts to keep this platform of immense value for all it's followers!
