Free For All Tuesday No. 282

  1. Is it just me, or, has there been a slow decline in the post activity on Philofaxy? I have noticed a reduction in the number of posts over the last 12 months. Are people losing interest or is there something else that I am missing - some other reason perhaps? I really hope that people are not losing interest... How can we reinvigorate the topic and or website?

    1. FFA posts used to have a lot of activity before facebook groups became an important source of information and a place to ask questions. The decline in number of comments here started a few years ago because of that, however I still think the blog remains popular despitw the lack of posting!

    2. Yes we remain as popular as ever. But I will admit our visitor numbers have dropped off. Comment numbers too. But I suspect we are in competition with Facebook these days compared to say 5 years ago.

I continue to try and think up new posts and to post every day, so our posting activity hasn't declined. Yes the numbers vary slightly from year to year, but still more than 1 per day.

The podcast is proving popular and despite the time it takes to prepare each one. The responses are excellent and we will continue with those. Lots of ideas on that one.

We always welcome ideas or topics for new posts.

    3. The rise of the Facebook groups has happened in parallel with a steady decline in blogging and interaction through comments. It's certainly not just Philifaxy where Steve and the team has done a tremendous job in maintaining a new post every day. I'm pleased that the podcasts have been popular. Personally, they are not for me, as I struggle to keep up with weekly radio podcasts that I download (such as business programmes) and 30 minutes is a big chunk of time.

The quality of discussion on most of the FB groups (ringed and non-ringed) is generally very low and I've recently gone "cold turkey" and withdrawn from nearly all of them. There are a couple of specialist groups that I very much enjoy belonging to. My daughters tell me that Facebook is outdated and SnapChat and Instagram are the way forward...

  2. I would not be surprised there are a decline in comments because more and more people look at social media on their mobile devices so sometimes it's easier to comment on FB than on a blog.. would I want the Philofaxy team to change the status quo on how we comment and the answer is no because it would make too easy for the spammers

  3. I'm not much of a Facebook fan - I have a personal page, but only about 20 friends who are mostly out of state family I like to keep in touch with. I much prefer interacting directly on the blogs or even Google+ as FB can tend to veer into catty waters at times.

I have noticed on the Saturday Web Finds post that the number of 'finds' has diminished a bit. When I began reading the finds back in Sept there were about 40-45 links listed. Maybe it's because it's summertime (on this side of the pond) and bloggers have slowed down a bit. I've noticed some blogs aren't posting informative content - but just a photo of their planner with 'here's my page for last week' - which is fine, but I really enjoy the 'nuts and bolts details' of planner posts.

    1. I have noticed this too. Back in the day, there would be at least one new blog a week for me to add to my list. Now, the posts come from blogs I already follow. As a blogger myself, I can say, that I just don't have the time to devote to it like I used to. I was doing weekly posts, now I'm lucky to do monthly posts. I used to push myself to get it done, but as I've been very happy with my set-up, I also find that I don't have much that's new to discuss. Angst and moving around offers up more ideas. I still blog, but only when I have time. In the meantime, I'm still keeping track of my ideas so that they will be there when I'm ready.

  4. FWIW.....

Think Steve and his crew do a fabulous job here on a consistent ongoing basis...thanks to all for such great work....

Like some others, I am not a Facebook fan and do not belong to or use Facebook at all for a variety of reasons....but would agree that FB is siphoning off a bit of energy from here....but I suspect that like others have said, Philofaxy provides things here that probably not replicated elsewhere....

So, think Philofaxy is like the 'mother ship' for all things ring binder-wise....and Steve is the Captain of the ship.... :)

My involvment here fluctuates a bit over time, but that's more a function of my workload and how much time I can spend at sites such as this and a few other sites that I enjoy on a regular basis.

  5. I have a FB page, but the only reason, besides groups like Filofax and VDS, I am on it is due to keeping in tough with family members in Canada and England (I'm in NY). I LOVE Philofaxy and Steve, Nan, Laurie and Anita all do a fantastic job. Philofaxy is like a treasure chest of information, and I still continue to discover new ideas through everyone's input.
