  1. A bit strange news for you, probably: I've got a new largest ringbinder now.

The ring binder is designed to hold 36"x24" sheets (914x609mm) in clear pockets of 36½"x25" (926x635mm). The outer dimensions are 98x69cm(!), so fully opened it is almost 1.5m² in size.

The pockets use a 2:1 Pitch (½") with 71 holes. The binder has two ring mechanics of two groups of eight rings each mounted. That's a total of 32 rings, an appropriate count to carry the weight of such large clear pockets intended to carry heavy paper. There are "cheap" ring binders of similar size (34") with three mechanics of three rings. These can't even hold the weight of ten clear sleeves. Good quality 34" ring binders use 4x6 = 24 rings.

The rings of the 36" binder are great, but the overall finish is a bit simple. It looks like there is a plastic stiffener inside fabric coating. The binder must have been stored standing up for a long time, the stiffener is warped along the short edge, due to sag of the weight of the ten included pockets.

If you caculate the Philofaxy number, it leads to a 9.4 for the pockets, and an 8.9 for the sheets they can hold.

    2. What was the original purpose, do you think? That's a big page. Maps, perhaps?

    4. Thanks for the interest and the comments. I will try to take some photos next weekend, and prepare stuff for a guest post.

Regarding the purpose: I think the main purpose was for presentations related to technical/architectural drawings, or commercials business presentations. Nowadays with huge high-resolution screens, this purpose is more or less obsolete. Where I bought the 36" ring binder, the suggested use was for storing movie posters.

  2. Surprised there was no news or info about unfortunate closing of William&Hannah. That hit hard the community. Would be great to have a feature about David Round.

    1. I did consider doing an article but it is all detailed on his website. Also given how busy has been since the announcement, it seemed unfair to pressure him into supplying a post.

You can read all about it here: https://williamhannah.com/pages/announcements

Yes it's very sad, but totally understandable given the world economy and tariffs etc.

  3. I would be curious to know your opinion on croc print. Do you like it? Have you got a favourite croc print binder? And do you consider croc print to fit equally male and female filofax users?

    1. I have always thought of croc as unisex rather than gender specific but the colours are where the difference comes in. I have a Filofax classic croc in raspberry which is more on the feminine end. I also have a black notebook cover that could easily be carried by either sex and look very professional. I like it and have handbags in croc print too.

I got the raspberry classic croc as it was on sale, I find full price too much but it’s very nice. I’d prefer it in a brown or black but the quality isn’t quite good enough for the full price, it feels like leather cover over card middle.

My favourite one is a nubuck Van Der Spek standard wide in mint that I bought from eBay, that’s a bit girly too to be fair! Lovely to hold and very good quality.
