Free For All Friday - No 920 by Steve

In the early hours of tomorrow morning, something will finally come to an end. The end of an era in a way.

This will only mean something to our readers in UK or Europe. The BBC have announced the ending of BBC Radio 4 on Long Wave (198 kHz)

If you have been reading this site/blog for any number of years, you will know of my connection to most things radio. I spent thirty seven years after leaving school working as a radio engineer in one form or another.

I've held my amateur radio licence since 1979.

I also have a 'collection' of Lefax Radio related inserts. I also have an old Lefax Radio Log Book.

I never thought I would see the BBC discontinue this radio service. To me it's like seeing an announcement or an equivalent announcement that Filofax are going to cease making ring bound organisers. There would be a similar reaction to the BBC announcement. Petitions and action groups etc.

Don't panic, I only choose that just as an example.

I will be 'tuning in' to listen to the end of 198kHz later tonight.

What ever you are doing this Friday, feel free to discuss anything Radio or Filofax related in the comments.

  1. It IS related, as some people regard organisers and paper planning as belonging to a pre-digital era. You’ve brought back memories as my grandma lived on the Welsh borders and we would drive past the massive transmitters at Droitwich Spa or Wooferton. She didn’t have running water and the toilet was a bucket in the shed, but until passing away at 90, she listened to a 1930s bakerlite radio, the tuning dial of which bore the names of pioneering European radio stations/ transmitters such as Droitwich, Lyons, Luxembourg, Hilversum and Athlone.

    1. Yes looking at an old wireless was a geography lesson on its own!

    1. Hopefully they received the office memo to retune their wireless sets to 162 kHz from 'that France' !

    2. Yes, but R4 not broadcasting was a sure sign that civilisation had gone to pot. One isn't really concerned if the damned French aren't there any more. Or have just decided to go on strike...

  3. Personally, I'm still upset that the BBC World Service stopped all shortwave service in the Western Hemisphere 25 years ago, in 2001.
