Corner Rounding
ReplyDeleteSeeing the rounded corners in the Downsizing video brought this topic back in my mind.
From what I observed, the question is to pay 100+ "bucks" or punch 100+ times.
There are basically three types of corner rounding tools:
- Professional cutters with stamp and die -> Off-Limits
- Semi-professional cutters for 10-30mm with a single-blade tool cutting against plastic or similar backing
- Small cutters similar to hole punches
There is a flood of small corner cutters, but many of them just don't do the job properly. Some are designed for cutting the corners on laminated paper, so these can only cut brittle/stiff material and fail on paper. Other punch single sheets perfectly, but fail on more than four sheets.
I finally bout the "generic" corner rounder model that cuts up to 10mm. There are interchangeable tools for 3.5mm, 6mm or 10mm corner radius, or straight cut. Also available 21mm thumb cut and 6mm single hole. Depending on how many accessory you buy, you end up at 100-200 Euro.
The cutter is sold under many brands and names like Warrior "M70" (item 21144) or "E6". Other brand names are Regur, Akiles, Galaxy or Tamerica, and posisbly some others.
Feel free to ask if you want to know more detali.
What is your corner rouding solution?
I previously had a Fiskars corner cutter, but it wasn't very reliable at doing the job. Then someone (I forget who) recommended another simple cutter that does three different corner radii. It's this one: https://amzn.to/3Tt7lt0
DeleteI've used it for many years as I print all my own inserts, it can do a couple of sheets at a time which fits with my work flow of cutting and punching the pages and I finish them off by doing the corners.
How much to spend? I guess it depends on how often you use it. I use it in bursts mainly for my diary inserts, but only occasionally at other times of the year.
Getting a cheap one to start with to see if you like having rounded corners is a good starting point.
Mine were all done with the Medium size corner.

Thanks for the link. That one looks good, but as usual with this type of punch, low capacity.
DeleteIt is also worth mentioning that Asian markets calculate with thinner "standard" paper: Here, three sheets of 64g/m² are given as reference. Western markets calculate with 80g/m² paper, where one sheet is roughly equal to 0.1mm thickness.
All of my inserts are on 80gsm paper and that cutter manages a couple of sheets at a time easily.
DeleteThat's good to hear. I forgot to mention that, since it is a Japanese product, it will probably do more than stated. Other sellers tend to state the maximum insertable count of sheets, which is different to the actual performance that depends on the type/characteristics of the inserted material.
DeleteAnother note about corner rounding: The paper guides are very important to get a clean transition from the paper edge to the rounding. The linked model has long paper guides. The deeper you insert the paper, the better the cut - if the blade is properly aligned with the guide.
For models with interchangeable tools, you have to re-adjust the paper guides after each tool change. That's a big drawback for these models, if you change the tools frequently.
