Free For All Friday No 888 by Laurie

I'm yet to find any brand of diary/ planner inserts that include all the information I want, even with customisable inserts. To be fair, there is a lot of information I like to have visible in my day spaces, and some of it is very specific to where I live.

So each year I write the following details in the day spaces of my weekly planner, if they are not pre-printed:

- I write the sunrise and sunset times into each Sunday. Where I live, the daylight hours change drastically throughout the year and I like to see how much daylight I'll have, especially evening light.

- Moon phases

- Solstices and equinoxes

- The usual holidays where I live

- Cultural holidays (Halloween etc)

- Holidays in the countries where my loved ones live

- When the clocks change in my country and my family members' countries

What information do you like to have in your diary pages? Is it already pre-printed in the inserts you use, or do you have to write it in yourself?

As always on Fridays, feel free to discuss anything Filofax related!

  1. I calculate my Bazi horoscope for each day of the year and score each day for family and work. For each month I look at the prevailing elements and how they affect my four pillars so that I can adjust my home and work space to mitigate or enhance unfavourable or favourable astrology.

  2. I love the idea of including sunrise and sunset times in the diary. I'm a huge fan of the vertical year planner leaflets and have unfortunately mislaid the next two months' sheets. I'm now creating them in Apple Pages, where two months back-to-back span three pages, so I was considering what to put on the first page besides a tracker. That suggestion works perfectly for wellbeing, as I can fit in a morning walk and regulate my circadian rhythm.
The reason I value the vertical yearly planner is the space it provides for each day to note appointments and plans, plus reviews afterwards. I also use the margins for quick reference keys. These keys are invaluable, particularly when you need to scan quickly for an event - for instance, in a meeting when you want to refer to the last one, or when checking upcoming social engagements or holidays. Therefore, whilst it may sound trivial, a key would be ideal for me.
Interesting anniversaries and facts are also helpful, especially religious days for other faiths so I can remember to send greetings to friends and colleagues who observe them.
Beyond that, most of my use centres on planning, tracking and goals, so incorporating a tracker or goal-setting mechanism would be useful.

  3. When I create my own diary inserts. After doing the mail merge and the creation of the full 12 months. I tend to leave the file for a few weeks and add to it before printing off the pages.

I go through the file and add birthdays of all of the family, anniversaries. Public holidays for UK and France (they aren't the same!) and also the dates when the clocks change in USA and UK/Europe, USA because Philofaxy runs on USA East Coast time so the timing of blog posts has to be adjusted for the 1-2 weeks between both continents changing the clocks twice a year.

For 2026 I've also added regular task reminders to the file at the point of creation to save having to write them in each week/month.

  4. I too add quite a lot of information each day.

Days when my wife is working.
Refuse collection days - home and office
    Travel information
    'No meetings' days
    Etc etc etc.

    All fairly easy to add........
