  1. Hi Steve. Just found this wonderful blog after going down a filofax rabbit-hole. I had a wonderful 4 ring pocket filofax from the 90s in beautiful brown leather, and have wanted to get it back into my life this year. I ordered diaries etc, but they didn't fit. I've since found out from reading your blog about the change in the ring format of the pocket filofax. I contacted filofax to ask which inserts suited my version (since I did manage to pick up some lined paper inserts with elongated holes which fitted). However, they replied and told me I must have fortuitously obtained some old stock. Can you recommend a hole punch that will allow me to still buy inserts and make them fit. Thank you so much in advance, Elaine x

    1. Hi Elaine
Yes any personal size punch will work with your four hole pocket.

    2. The Rapesco 13x2 (x being the colour code) punch in Steve's link will punch holes in a number of page sizes. For the 4-ring Pocket, set the ring punch positions to 'Personal', and then align the paper with the 'Pocket' mark. This will punch the four holes in the right places.

One issue is the size of the holes punched; the slim rings on the old 4-ring pockets really need a small hole (4mm). With larger holes produced by the Rapesco, the pages can slip about a bit .

Another issue is the punch margin; small diameter rings (especially the 7/16" rings on the very first Pockets) need holes punching closer to the page edge, otherwise the pages interfere with each other when pages are opened. This can be addressed to some extent by inserting a shim into the punch 'mouth', to keep the pages a bit further out.

  2. Thanks for the quick replies on this. I’ve noticed on your blog, there are also diary files that can be downloaded. So if I wanted to print the pages from scratch to produce a much neater (without double holes) diary solution, if there a punch that exists that will just punch to for holes in the correct hole size and position?
    Cheers
    Elaine
