So you have this filofax based system all worked out and it is going well, then something changes and it doesn't! What have your experiences been when or if this has happened?
ReplyDeleteBTW I am not talking about needing a change in system through choice but something external changes and that forces a change on your planning system.
In my case a change in the way I have to carry my kit to work site meant I had to find a smaller package. Not sorted that but the meeplus is looking the best ring based system, currently experimenting with discbound system. Not great is my verdict.
My old system was day on two pages business planner from Filofax (not cheap as a diary but it is quite a bulky package when it arrived. Also in A5 so it weighed a lot. I like the space for planning appointments, plenty of note taking space and key tasks space. I was able to put a day on those pages (with a simple A5 notebook as a rough working notebook on the side). At over 2 kg even with just a rolling 3 months of dated inserts it was a beast to carry on my back cycling to work. When I put it on the bike it was better but still, it was a hassle getting things back in and sometimes coming home it felt like the bag I used was overstuffed too.
RIght now I am saving to get an A5 meeplus. I am using a holborn personal as backup but it is not compact, kind of like my A5 but in a smaller area. I need thinner not smaller area. Still I think a rolling 3 months in a meeplus A5 11mm rings or 16mm rings with spare capacity for notes is my best ring based option.
It is a shame that FIlofax does not do a truly compact A5 option. Heritage is actually not that compact any more in A5.
So what is your enforced change? Did you come up with a radical change to cope?
Yes when I resigned/retired back in 2010 it took me about a year to come up with a diary layout that worked for me. I was using an A5 Finsbury when I was at work and I continued to use that size and occasionally personal size.
DeleteI went through several different brands of inserts before Ray Blake came along and rescued me!
I was then able to design my own layout and print it myself and that is the one I've used ever since. A slight change next year but still home designed/printed.
The MeePlus A5 I think will suit your needs, but personally I would opt for the 16 mm rings. The 11mm rings are a bit tight for space on the inside of the rings for the pages to turn smoothly.
I’ve had this problem for very many years! A5 has plenty of space to write but can be too heavy to carry around.
DeleteI like the Me. It’s not unlike a Compact A5 I made and posted about on here a decade ago. However, I like the ability to fold the binder back and take notes whilst on the move or in a meeting. Although not perfect, I’ve been using an A5 Clipbook with a strictly enforced page limit and no tabs or ruler allowed to protrude. The Clipbook isn’t as classy as the Heritage or Me but it is lighter and very portable.
Hi all. I was reflecting on the reactions I get from folks when they see I use a Filofax. I'm a private Guitar teacher and keep all my appointments in my A5 Finsbury. I often see a kind of wistful look wash across people's faces as I slip the pen out of my organiser and effortlessly make or correct an entry, especially if they have been viciously pecking at a mobile phone screen trying to do the same. What kind of reactions do you get?
ReplyDeleteI bet you win that race every time! I've got used to people making odd comments about 'Still using a Filofax' or 'I had one of those once'
DeleteBut it works for me and that's all that matters!!
In my old job a filofax was not right (it was a pretty backwards place but everyone was glued to a phone or used plain old A4 day to a page diary). I moved and kept with my old A5 diary / bullet journal for awhile. Then I saw a filofax in the wild. So I got a personal Holborn as my then personal metropol was not smart enough and I joined the work filofax users. Then I noticed more and more people using them. It turns out there were a lot of them around I never noticed until I got one.
DeleteThen I though in for a penny in for a pound and out came a used finsbury A5. Then a used mini Lyndhurst as the A5 was very heavy and bulky. Then the mini Lyndhurst was too small so out came an A5 Lyndhurst. By that time nobody really noticed or commented on what was being used.
I have moved on many times since, but at my place nobody reacts to a filofax. Very occasionally something positive comes out but they are used a lot more than you'd expect I reckon among the desk jockeys that is. My old job there would have been reactions and many would have been pretty negative.
