Free for All Friday No. 489 by Nan

After about 9 months of using bullet journals and a weekly bound planner, I've started to transition back to using a Personal-size Filofax, with one-page-per-day. I had started to want more daily detail than the weekly allowed.

I find the transition is harder than usual. Instead of finding it a refreshing change, I'm struggling with it. I feel disoriented and less likely to write things down. Maybe it's because the bullet journaling was working well for me before I decided to change. Maybe it's something else.

Have you ever experienced this?

Naturally as this is Friday please feel free to discuss anything ring bound planner or organizer related.

Filofax Carrying Pouch

Do you worry about carrying your Filofax organiser in your bag/purse? Could it get damaged by other things in your bag, such as keys or loose change etc?

Why not carry it in a dust bag. There is a great simple to make travel pouch on Thomas's site here.

Or look out for dust bags or gift bags on Amazon or Etsy, an example is posted below.

Tell us about...... 21

If you follow the principles of Getting Things Done by David Allen in your organiser.

I am curious do you use a Daily or Weekly diary insert?

Which format works best for you?

Tell us in the comments below.

A5 Enhanced Time Manager Insert - Revisited

I often get questions about inserts, these normally result me referring people to our own inserts. In most cases they generally find something that fits their needs... but not always.

Recently Charlee T. contacted me looking for a seller of a particular type of inserts, but I was unable to help, so once again I said have you looked at our inserts with view to may be adapting one of them to her needs.

After a few more message exchanges she said she would give it ago, naturally I offered to give her some additional support if she got stuck.

Normally I don't hear back from people, but Charlee was very pleased with her adaption of our Enhanced Time Manager insert. I took a look at her 'version 1.0' and thought hmmm I could do a few improvements on this insert and make it generally available.

So here it is. The most obvious change is that the appointments section has been moved across to the right hand page. This has freed up all of the left hand page to be be divided up in to different types of notes and task areas. Charlee had a definite need for separate Personal and Work To Do lists, which you will see we have incorporated at the foot of the left hand page.

We have maintained the same number of lines per day throughout the whole week.

Naturally you can easily adjust the headings, shading, fonts etc to suit your own needs/requirements by editing the source file and redoing the mail merge.

There are two versions available, one with 4 lines per day, the other with 5 lines per day. Depending on how neat and small your hand writing is will determine which version to use.

Source Files:
Note to change the year or the 12 months covered you just need to edit cell A2 of the Excel file.

You can download finished versions for this year from our diary inserts page

When printing note these files are formatted to be A4 page size. Either Booklet print on to A4 paper or Print on to A5 paper scale to fit (70%)

This version will be known as the 'Reversed Enhanced Time Management' insert by virtue of the positioning of the appointments section on the opposite page.

To customise the files you will need to download the relevant source files listed above. When you've made all the changes you like to the template, you can perform a mail merge to create your own insert for any period you like. Check out our Free Diary Inserts link if you want more information on how to do this, including videos at the bottom of the page.

Once again a big thank you to Ray at 'My Life All In One Place' for his hard work and co-operation with helping to create and support us with all these inserts.

Free For All Friday No 488 by Laurie

One of the many glorious things about using a ring binder is adding whatever pages you like for planning, tracking, forms, etc. There are so many pages to choose from! The options really are limitless.

In fact, there are so many options sometimes it can feel overwhelming. Below I have outlined planner pages possibilities, in approximate order from simplest to most complex.

~ You can buy "off the rack" planner pages from brands like Filofax, Franklin Planner, Day-Timer etc.

~ You can buy pre-printed pages in a wide variety of formats and designs from individual sellers, on Etsy for example. The seller prints these pages and mails them to you.

~ You can download pre-made pages and print them yourself. These pages have been designed by someone, and you download the file to print on your own printer or take to a print shop to have printed for you. Sometimes the downloads are free, others cost money. Philofaxy has a wide range of free printables. Etsy has loads of printables you can purchase and download to print yourself.

~ If you have the patience, skill, and equipment, you can design and print your own pages. This is a great option if you are able, because you can make your pages exactly how you want them and tweak/ change them whenever you want.

You can also do a combination of these. For example you can buy pre-made planner pages, and design and print your own trackers or budget forms.

Do you buy pre-made pages? Do you download and print? Do you create your own (and if so what software/ apps do you use)? Please leave a comment so others can be inspired and informed on where to get pages!

And as always on Fridays, feel free to discuss and/ or ask anything ring-binder organizer related.

Guest Post - It’s All A Matter of Space and Time - Helen

Thank you to Helen Fennell in to this insight on how she uses a pocket size planner.

I had already decided on the title of this post before the sad death of Professor Stephen Hawking. I wondered about changing, but kept it, not because I have any idea as to how he organised his life, but because I am a great admirer of his work, although I don’t pretend to understand much of it.

So, what is this post all about? Not cosmology you will be pleased to hear. I am in my fifth year of using a pocket Moleskine planner*, and I often get asked why I use something so small, and how I manage it. I have written a couple of times about it over on Plannerisms here and here. I need something small that I can carry everywhere, and I will admit that I work it hard, using every part of it I can.

At the end of 2017 I was mulling over moving up to the large size Moleskine, and as thought more about it I realised that using the pocket size had one huge advantage I hadn’t realised before… it stops me from overbooking myself. There isn’t room for me to put in more than I can actually do. This might seem like a disadvantage, what about writing down all the things I need to do? Well, they get stored elsewhere and I pick from that list as to what to do each day. I know if I fill up the daily space in planner, with to-dos or appointments, then that’s it. I am not likely to be able to fit in anything else without much wailing, moaning and gnashing of teeth. So you can see, my planning is based on the relationship between space and time.

Depending on what your day’s look like, perhaps lots of small things, a few very large items, or something in between, have you tried setting up your planner such that you can’t possibly overwhelm yourself on a day to day basis?

*Am I allowed to say that on this site?!

Thank you Helen, I'm sure we can translate your thoughts and ideas to Filofax Pocket Size.

London Meet Up March 2018.

I am just travelling back from a weekend in London. A weekend with very unseasonal weather unfortunately... snow in March? !

However the poor weather did not stop 13 keen Filofax users from gathering in London, including Danielle from Paris and Ana Maria from Malaga in Spain, which makes my journey look a bit like a ‘walk in the park’!!

Sadly due to the poor weather and the number of people dropping out I had to cancel the Bath meet up on the Sunday.

But back to Saturday, it was a cold day with some snow showers, so not ideal weather for walking around.

It was also great to have new people attending as well as past attendees at the meet up. London remains a popular venue for meet ups.

We had a visit from a journalist who is writing an article for PC Pro magazine about people who prefer 'analogue' planning, analogue (film) photography, and old fashioned board games. Dave rang me earlier in the week for a 'quick 10 minute interview about organisers'.... 45 minutes later he asked if he could come along on Saturday to meet other organiser fans!

It was great to have lots of conversations around the tables. There were five of us in the small group who had attended PlannerCon Europe back in October so it was great to meet up again.

The story of the day is best told in pictures. Thank you to Jené for the additional photos.

I let the train take the strain this time, it was a relaxing journey via SNCF and Eurostar

Ian, Danielle and Max in conversation

Darren and Ana Maria

Jacqui, Ana Maria and Sara

A stack of organisers!

Steve being asked 'Can I change these rings?' !

After the lunch a few of us battled through the cold weather to visit Muji and Paperchase.

Paperchase didn't have any of their own brand organisers on the shelves, may be they sold out in the New Year. They had a small display of Filofax organisers and inserts on the 1st floor.

Thank you to everyone that attended the meet up... 'When is the next one?' Most probably in the Autumn.

How often do you visit Philofaxy?

Thank you to everyone that took part in the recent poll. Here are the final results:

I was quite pleased with the end results especially as it shows that over three quarters of the people that took part (298 people) look at the blog at least once a week, with more than half of them looking every couple of days.

This mini survey is a great help to me because it helps me to decide how often to schedule certain types of posts (news updates, general updates, posts for people new to the blog etc.)

Again thank you to every that took part.
