Gap in History

I was looking through Kevin Hall's A Chronology of Filofax, I find myself reading this valuable document quite often because it is crammed full of detailed information about the company.

Through the document you can build up a valuable picture of the company and the products they have introduced over the years.

The main focus of the document is really from 1980 onwards. However the brand started in the 1920's in 1940 a bomb destroyed the company records but fortunately Grace Curr had a copy of all the names and addresses of customers and suppliers in her two Filofax organisers. So she was able to help the company get back on its feet again.

What happened between 1945 and 1980? With the war over and the country recovering and slowly getting back to normal and industry returning to normal domestic production. What were Filofax doing back then?

Looking at various social histories on line about how industry changed over this 35 years and how society changed during the same period. Where Filofax still producing the same models all the time at their facility in Forest Road, Ilford?

I suspect there was no influence from the major changes in fashion in the 1960's and 1970's that influenced Filofax.

We know that the early 1980's models are very similar in design to those of the late 1930's, although the range of colours had expanded a little.

Can anyone supply more detail than what I have had an educated guess at?

Local Stockists?

By now you will have no doubt gone through the cycle of buying new diary inserts and possibly other paper additions for your Filofax.

At one time the Filofax website used to have a detailed list of stockists, they listed them by county in UK and then you could get the details of the shops, their address, etc etc.

Whilst there is still a Stockist's page on Filofax UK it only shows John Lewis and Ryman.

So apart from ordering on-line where do you get your inserts from these days?

Free For All Friday No 478 - Steve

This week for me has been about putting plans in to action, booking travel and hotels for my visit in March for the meet ups in London and Bath. I've done London lots of times of course. I used to work in Central London many years ago so I'm familiar with the geography.

Bath isn't a strange place, I've been there a few times. I attended an Open University Summer School there many years ago! But I've been getting familiar with the city from a street layout again.

I've been gathering all my notes together on to simple ruled sheets ready for the trip back in March.  All part of the fun really. Do you use your organiser for planning your travels?

There are plenty of spaces available for either meet up, so please get in touch.

Don't forget you are welcome to discuss anything organiser related. Have a good weekend.

Gillio Leather Colours and Model Codes

Have you ever wondered what the mysterious numbers are on the stickers of Gillio boxes? They designate the model size/model type and the colours of the leather.

The first number is the size of the organiser, and the second number is the model or layout
  • 229/11 Amica Mini
  • 223/11 Amica Pocket
  • 224/10 Amica Medium
  • 238/18 Amica A5
  • 229/14 Compagna Mini
  • 223/14 Compagna Pocket
  • 231/02 Compagna A6
  • 222/02 Compagna Slim
  • 224/02 Compagna Medium
  • 238/02 Compagna A5
  • 229/08 Mia Cara Mini
  • 223/08 Mia Cara Pocket
  • 231/08 Mia Cara A6
  • 224/08 Mia Cara Medium
  • 238/08 Mia Cara A5

So 238/02 from the above list is an A5 Compagna which is what is in this box. and 828 is the colour Royal Blue.

Here are the leather samples scanned in.

What to do with last years inserts?

For some people part of the 'New Year' ritual is to swap over their diary inserts. Taking out last years and inserting the next years.

That said a lot of people do this on a rolling basis, archiving past weeks/months and adding in future weeks/months. They always keep 6-12 months in their organiser at any one time, with a split of say 3 months past and 9 months future, but the length of time and the split between past and future is a personal choice of course.

It will also depend on the type of inserts you are using and the size of rings or the capacity of your organiser to hold the amount of paper you need.

What ever camp you are in, what do you do with your old inserts? Some people archive them, but I have heard of people that shred them.

Personally I archive mine in an old large ring A5 Finsbury, it can hold 3-4 years worth of week on two page inserts comfortably.

A cheap and simple alternative is to use 'Treasury Tags', they come in a variety of sizes and lengths and they keep pages securely together, you simply pass them through the holes of the organiser pages and you can still turn the pages easily etc.

Why keep your old inserts? It's a question I've been asked a few times.

'Just in case' is a fairly lame response I know, but I've had cause in the last few years to have to go back through my old inserts and journals to prove where I was on a particular day or week.

Without my diaries and inserts it would have been difficult to prove my whereabouts convincingly enough to satisfy a judge in a legal case.

No, I wasn't accused of anything bad honest!! It was more about proving I had seen my late mother many times and spoken to her at regular intervals, when it was alleged I had no contact at all with her after moving to France in 2010.

My archived inserts helped me pin down dates in telephone records and dates to look for photographs of us together either here in France or in UK.

Whilst keeping your past inserts doesn't take up much space, you can decide how long to keep them for.

I still have my 1987, 1988, 1989 inserts from when I first started using a Filofax, they make fascinating reading! I was using my Filofax more as a journal than a planner, but I didn't really know the difference back then!

What do you do with your old inserts?

Philofaxy Bath Meet-Up - March 2018

I am planning a visit to Bath in March 2018,  the same weekend as the London Meet Up.

This event is open to everyone, there are no qualifying requirements... if you enjoy good company and you like organisers of any brand then you will be very welcome and you will be amongst friends.

Bath - Sunday 18th March 2018

So this is a 'calling notice' for people who would like to attend the Philofaxy Meet Up in Bath

Please read all of the post before you apply for a place on the meet up.

When and Where

We will meet initially at 12 noon at Pizza Express, 8 Southgate Place, Southgate Centre, Bath BA1 1AP.

After lunch we will visit Woods The Stationers, 12 Old Bond St, Bath BA1 1BR. And if there is time we will pop in to Waterstones for a coffee.

During the meal there will be plenty of time for chatting and sharing Filofax organisers...

To discover details about the food at Pizza Express please look on their website.

Our meet up will finish at about 5:00pm, but people will be free to leave at any point to fit in with their travel arrangements.

How to book a place on the meet up

To get a place on the meet up you need to email: steve[at]philofaxy[dot]com and mark your email 'March 2018 Bath Meetup', you can book a place straight away.

As places are allocated you will receive an email back again confirming your place on the meet up.

Philofaxy London Meet-Up - March 2018

I am planning a visit to London in March 2018.

This event is open to everyone, there are no qualifying requirements... if you enjoy good company and you like organisers of any brand then you will be very welcome and you will be amongst friends.

London - Saturday 17th March 2018

So this is a 'calling notice' for people who would like to attend the Philofaxy Meet Up in London

Please read all of the post before you apply for a place on the meet up.

When and Where

We will meet initially at 12 noon at Vapiano in Great Portland Street. This is not far from Oxford Circus underground station.

We have visited this venue before.  They have a great ordering system which uses a smart card to record the items you order from the bar or food counter. When you pay the bill you will only be paying for the items you ordered and there's no additional service charge. Because of the flexibility on their ordering and payment system, you will be able to easily pay with cash or card. If you are slightly late it won't be quite so critical.

You can read all about the restaurant on their website here

During the meal there will be plenty of time for chatting and sharing Filofax organisers...

Our meet up will finish at about 5:30pm

How to book a place on the meet up

To get a place on the meet up you need to email: steve[at]philofaxy[dot]com and mark your email 'March 2018 London Meetup', you can book a place straight away.

As places are allocated you will receive an email back again confirming your place on the meet up.

Please do not book travel tickets etc until you have a confirmed place. I will attempt to confirm places within 2-3 hours of receiving your email.

Additional Information

If you aren't familiar with London or how to get to Vapiano from the station you are arriving at then use the Transport for London Journey Planner, it's generally quite good.

Once we have our full list of people, we will exchange email addresses and if you aren't familiar with London you might be able to get someone to meet you at the station you are arriving at.

Your safety on the day and your enjoyment on the day is of paramount importance to me, so don't be afraid to ask any questions by email, I want everyone who attends to get the most from the day.

Thank you... any questions?

An announcement about the meet up in Bath on Sunday 18th March will be published soon.
