Free For All Friday - No. 718 by Anita

I have a confession... I haven't been using a Filofax for the past 2 months!
Life has been fairly full-on for the last number of years, so I've realised more recently that I just don't have much spare energy outside of working and spending time with family. Therefore I decided that potentially this could be a useful time to have a break from using an organiser, whilst I'm focussing more on resting in general and also recovering from COVID.

I've been using an A4 hardback notebook for work and a pocket Moleskine (in my Raydori) for anything else that I'd like to keep track of. However, on purpose right now I'm not writing much in the Moleskine, but I'm glad that it's there to get things out of my head and for when I am thinking more about what I'd like to do in maybe a couple of months. It's been a good hiatus from planning and I think that I'm now ready to start thinking about getting back to using my Filofaxes for maybe the beginning of September.

Have you recently taken a break from using a ring-bound organiser and if so, did you find it useful?

And as always on Fridays, please feel free to discuss anything organiser related. I hope that you have a great weekend.

Carrying Stamps in your Filofax

Do you remember writing letters? Taking a pen and writing on a piece of writing paper, then folding it and putting it an envelope (that symbol you see to send an email!)

On the outside of the envelope you write the name and address of the person you are sending the letter to. You then put a stamp in the top right hand corner of the envelope on the side you have written the address and post it in a mail box.

Stamps are like the currency of letter writing, you pay the post office a certain amount to send a letter of a certain size and weight. Once they receive your letter it travels through their system and within a few days it will be delivered to the person you sent it to.

In the world of ever increasing electronic communications, where we can send a message in seconds without using stamps and envelopes, our children and grand children would read the above description of 'sending a letter' and roll their eyes at the thought of how slow the process was!

In years gone by, we were all letter writers in some form or another. We might have kept a stock of stamps of different values to cover the cost of postage to different countries or for different sizes of letters.

Some Filofax organisers had stamp pockets in their covers in the same way they have business card pockets now. At some point they also made an insert to hold stamps in your Filofax.

My wife Alison has one of these inserts.

It is made out of card in Personal size with six rows of semi transparent paper that you tuck the stamps behind.

Unfortunately there's no branding or date shown on the insert. The closest thing I can find mentioned in the 1937 catalogue is a 'Stamp Approval Card' but there's no illustration of it, so that is just a best guess really.

In discussion with Neil, we also believe that this type of insert might have been used by stamp collectors (philatelist) to carry stamps they had bought for their collection or ones they were about to sell.

These days you could use such an insert for your decoration stickers?

Do you carry postage stamps?

[Update]

Christopher, one of our UK readers sent me a photo of his solution to carrying stamps in his Finsbury Mini.

Thank you Christopher.

Celebrities/Famous People that use a Filofax?

Photo linked from Daily Mail
We often see an actor/actress using a Filofax or another brand of organiser in a film or TV show, but they are often a prop or similar. They might not be a Filofax user themselves. Janet has been

However, there are exceptions, occasionally we will spot a famous person carrying a Filofax or we might read a news story that mentions a 'famous' person uses a Filofax.

Recently, Coleen Rooney (wife of English football player Wayne Rooney) was seen in court referring to her notes in her Filofax. I won't go in to the details of the court case, you can find it easily enough with the help of Mr Google

Back in 2010 Mrs Rooney was photographed on holiday with her Filofax, the photograph featured in the Daily Mail. The comments at the time on social media ranged from details about her swimsuit, but planner people were more interested in the model of planner and what does she carry in it!!

A New York Times article from 1987 mentioned several other 'famous' users including Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen and Diane Keaton. Diane Keaton is known to have invented/requested that Filofax made a removable insert for cash and cards. This is also mentioned in an LA Times article from 1988.

I've seen passing reference to Madonna (Singer) and Naomi Campbell (Model) also being Filofax users.

Some of these news reports are getting some what dated now, are they still Filofax users?

Free For All Friday - No. 717 by Steve

Recently I've taken to using pencil for diary entries that have yet to be confirmed. The entry might appear on all the possible dates. I can then erase the unused dates and use a pen to ink in the chosen date.

Does any one have a favourite mechanical pencil that will fit your average size pen loop?

Of course it is Friday so please feel free to discuss anything else Filofax related.

Have a good weekend.
