Free for All Friday No. 625 by Nan

Fifteen years ago, on October 31, 2005, the elusive "Original Philofaxer" wrote about his decision to abandon electronic organizing and return to paper. The following year, I grew tired of constantly troubleshooting my Palm Pilot, returned to paper myself, and, in search of a community of like-minded souls, asked to join the blog. A few years later, I recruited Steve and Laurie to help me write posts. Then Steve recruited Anita and Ray. I just want to thank everyone, especially Steve "Mr Philofaxy," who brought the blog to its full potential and created the enormous community that grew up around it on Facebook, YouTube, and so many other sites. Steve and so many others have given so much to create the joyful, loving community we have today, and I salute you all! Please join me in tribute in the comments below!

Two organisers I had almost forgotten about!

Are there any organisers that you had thoughts about buying, but then something else comes along and you buy that instead? Then they may be change the design, so you never buy one or you never see one that you like?

All #FirstWorldProblems I know! but sometimes you eventually manage to fulfil you desire to own one.

In the last few weeks I've filled in two of my 'Wanted one day' gaps in my organiser collection.

The first was the Filofax Kensington. I know there are several people who are fans of this model including Anita. It has sort of slid past me until recently. This one I got from Alan in Canada, who kindly donated it to me and I gave a donation to Chimwemwe. Thank you Alan.

Back in about 2012/13 I became aware of the Mulberry Agenda, whilst looking for other brands of organisers to blog about. At first I couldn't work out what the ring spacing was. I ended up working it out from a screenshot and by estimation! Crude but effective.

Realising this was a bit different and was in fact A6 size I thought about purchasing one. For several reasons I didn't order one. The prices of new ones seemed to vary quite a bit. The price in UK compared to France seemed to be more than just the difference in the exchange rate, which put me off I suppose.

Then whilst I was pontificating about what to do, along came Gillio and then Van der Spek in to my field of vision and the Mulberry purchase got pushed out of my mind for a while.

By the time I started to think about it again Mulberry had changed their design and had started to use their 'Postman's Lock' type clasp, which I wasn't so keen on. Likewise they had moved away from 'traditional' coloured leathers to more 'fashionable' colours!

Move forward to a couple of weeks ago when one of our readers sent in an advert for Adspot... and there it was.... a black Mulberry in excellent used condition from a few years ago. The advert never got on to the page, my response was 'How much for shipping to France?'

The deal was done within an hour and the item was posted to me later that day!! Such is the danger of maintaining the Adspot page!

The inserts are very high quality.

Krause 23 mm rings are fitted to this Mulberry Agenda.

I love the simplicity of the design of the Mulberry. The covers do have some stiffener in-between the inner and outer leather, but that means it is easy to write in when there isn't a flat surface to hand. It has a decent selection of pockets in the front and back covers.

I gave it a little TLC in the form of some beeswax leather conditioner and the lustre and shine in the leather was restored fully.

Free For All Friday - No. 624 by Steve

Snow in Pembury Winter 2009

Working from home used to be reserved to bad weather days when snow or fallen trees used to block access to the site I worked on, which was situated on top of the North Downs of Kent. You could get to the access road to the site but from then on it would be difficult to access the site.

I used to keep my site phone book in my A5 Filofax specifically for days like that. I would be able to work from home with some of my notes. But it was fairly restrictive without access to work networks etc. So days like that would be restricted to self training type activities...

Roll forward over 10 years and there are an awful lot more of us 'Working from Home' How has your Filofax adapted to this new 'normal'??

Of course it is Friday so please feel free to discuss anything ring bound organiser related.

22 October 2020

Why go back in time?

What is the attraction of looking at old catalogues and price lists and any brochures from Filofax in the 1980s?

I have been asking myself this question and a few others in the last few weeks after receiving a large packet of documents from a reader in Australia.

Back in the mid to late 1980s when I had become a Filofax user there was no internet so paper catalogues and visiting shops in London such as Chisholms in Kingsway and DeVille in Villiers Street were my only source of information about the brand and the inserts.

Like a few others I suspect I had received a paper catalogue with all of the inserts listed, but how do you know the difference between one address insert and another?

I think I've mentioned this before but I stopped using my Filofax from about 1993 to 2005, I went electronic, first with a Casio Digital Diary and then with a Psion 5Mx and briefly with an HP iPaq. For me there was a vast gapping hole in my knowledge of what went on in those years.

By 1993/1994 we also got the internet at home, but in those early days finding information could be a bit hit and miss, and I wasn't searching for Filofax things back then on Altavista (pre-Google days!) using Netscape.

So in a way the paper catalogues work as a reminder for me, filling in the gap in my knowledge, helping me learn what I missed out on!

I'm still working my way through the box of items received from Australia, There are some duplicates of what we have already in the archive, but I'm scanning in some again because they are better quality than the ones we have already.
