Free For All Friday No 649 - by Steve

Thank you to everyone who has joined in on the Skype Round Table/Virtual Meet Up's in the last year.

With no prospect of a real face to face meet up happening any month soon, the on-line equivalent is the next best thing.

The topics are varied and mixed, on average we are rarely more than 10 people over the course of the 2-3 hours, some people don't stay very long, but that is ok. The participants are from quite a variety of countries too.

Having adopted an open access to the group, it has become much easier to join and less dependent on me doing all the adding of people to the conversation etc.

Would you join in on the Skype chat if it was at a different time of the day, or a different day in the week? Please let us know in the comments.

Of course it is Friday so feel free to discuss anything organiser related.

Take care and stay safe.

Scheduling Your Gardening Tasks In Your Organiser

There is a lot of colour in our garden at this time of year.

If like me you are a bit of an amateur gardener and you need reminders as to when to do certain tasks in the garden at this time of year, then you might like to print off this simple guide for when to prune your plants and shrubs.
  • A5 When to prune (Gardening) - .docx .pdf
  • Personal When to prune (Gardening) - .docx .pdf
You might also want to use a simple year planner split in to months or the seasons to make a note of observations on when things come in to bloom, or when trees start to blossom. You can also record weather details, because frosts will have an impact on the flowering of bulbs in spring.

Download a suitable monthly or year planner from our diary inserts page, there are examples there for most sizes.

A-Z index dividers

A-Z index dividers have generally been used to divide your contact or address pages. With a lot of people using their smart phones for maintaining their contact lists these days, you might thing that the A-Z index no longer has a purpose in your organiser?

They can of course be used to keep reference information filed in to alphabetical order. The information might not even be related to each other, random information that you need to keep to hand, but you are unsure which section it belongs in. An A-Z divided section might be just right for this type of application.

Looking through my 'collection' of inserts I was surprised to see the variety of different A-Z index dividers there have been through the years. Here are six examples, there are plenty of others as well.

Left to Right: Single letter A-Z (1990), Double letter A-Z (1985) Two/three letter Telephone number A-Z (2007)

Even in the same year Filofax offered different designs of A-Z index dividers.

Left to Right: Coloured double letter A-Z (1985), Mottled effect double letter A-Z (1985), Different shades of blue double letter A-Z (2003)

Do you have an A-Z index section in your organiser? What do you use it for?

Free for All Friday, No. 648 by Nan

Organizers are almost always used for one thing—organizing time. You might use yours to plan how to spend your time for the upcoming day, week, or month. Or even plan what you intend to do years in advance!

But what if your organizer could be a time bridge of sorts? A way to connect you to the past or future?

You could put away your organizer at the end of the year and look back on it one year later, to see what has changed.

You could use an organizer to hold your family tree, complete with photographs and documents.

You could create a time capsule in an organizer for others to read a few years, decades, or even centuries later!

As always, all discussion of ring-bound organizers is welcome here on Friday!

Planning the Franklin Planner way....

Easter 2021 was the first weekend of April 2021 and if you are reading this many years later you might know that we were still in the world of a global pandemic of a scale unseen in modern history. No travelling between countries and in my case I'm limited to staying within 10 km without a note from up on high!

Staying at home continued to be the order of the day. However, instead of binge watching things on Netflix/Amazon Prime/YouTube (delete as applicable) I decided to spend a bit of time doing some self-training.

I came across a three part series from Franklin Planner (Franklin Covey?). At first I thought it was going to be hard going, but I stuck with it.

The three videos were 50 minutes, 51 minutes and 35 minutes long. I cheated after the first one and opted for changing the playback speed to 1.25 to speed things up a little. I watched them one after another with a gap between parts one and two for lunch. You can split them between different days if don't have over 2 hours to spare. The splits between parts is at good dividing points.

The videos go in to a lot of detail and the last part about how the different sections of a Franklin planner are supposed to be used was very interesting in terms of how all of the different pages are used without duplication (daily, weekly, monthly pages etc)

Will I change my planning method and approach to how I use my own planner, at the time of writing I don't think so, but I am sure I learnt a few things along the way.

It proved my thoughts that just seeing blank inserts tells you nothing about how they were intended to be used.

Part one focuses on the value and importance of time management.

Part two moves on to building The Productivity Pyramid.

Finally part 3 focuses on the power of the paper tool: your Franklin Planner (or any other similar planner!).

Of course, if you are familiar with the topics covered in the first or second videos dive in to part 3.

I found that the videos are very well presented and there are examples used at each stage of the presentations.
